Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

Our location is 15 minutes from the Appalachian Trail and James River access. The Jefferson Washington National Forest is nearby and offers opportunities for visiting waterfalls, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and paddling. Downtown Lynchburg is 20 minutes away with great restaurants, farmers markets and shopping. We are a growing homestead. We are planting fruits trees, cultivating shiitake mushrooms, raising ducks and tending gardens here and have farm fresh products that are seasonally available to guests just ask! Our 65 acre farm is secluded and peaceful. We have a small pond with catfish, bluegill, large mouth bass (catch and release only) and a gentle creek. We have chickens, sheep, a pig, cows and diary goats. Enjoy a walk down to the pond and take a picture by the old farm house (from the early 1800's) or explore history in the cemetery. You could also take the kids for a hike in the forest and search for mushrooms. At the end of the day you can kick back by the fire pit, stargaze and make some s'mores. This property was once a 300 acre plus tobacco farm. We are located within two miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian trail via a gated, public, forest road. Hikers should park at their campsite and walk up. The original log cabin was built in the 1850s and now serves as our dining room. The front portion of the house was completed in April of 1861 and the back in the early 1900s. We have plans to eventually turn it into a working farm which produces tinctures, salves and extracts of various native plants. Learn more about this land: Heavily wooded mountain side with flowing creek. Easy access (walking distance) to Jefferson National Forest, National Forest horse trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. (Note: You cannot drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway as the path is an old forest road which has been gated, but you can walk up to it.)  We also have a tree house which has AC, heat and electrical connection.     You may camp anywhere on the property.  There is plenty of frontage on the creek and several tents can go up there. Peace like a river, love like a mountain Wintergreen Resort we’re not, but if you’re looking for a cozy (800-900 sq. ft.) mountain cabin with most of the comforts of home, Rocky Run Landing might be the place for you. Our motto is “You’re a long way away from it all before you ever get here.” Rocky Run Landing sits back in a loblolly pine grove just under the crest of Hawk Ridge in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cabin is two miles up the Tye River from the village of Norwood and the James River in southern Nelson County, Virginia. The address is 3124 Cedar Creek Road, Arrington, VA 22922. The cabin has a telephone, but no long distance service. Your calling card will work with this phone. You’ll have to find just the right spot to use your cell phone. Wireless internet is available via satellite. Rocky Run Landing consists of a small first-floor bedroom, a small loft bedroom, a bath and a half, kitchen/dining area, and a great room. The great room has two sleep futons, chairs, and a small TV/DVR with cable. A wood stove is also in the great room. The small kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, deep sink, gas range, coffeemaker, and microwave oven. A dining table and four chairs are provided, along with basic pots, pans, and tableware. Rocky Run Landing has central HVAC, but often all you need are the ceiling and pedestal fans. The best experience is al fresco! The small first floor bedroom features a queen bed, nightstand and lamp, and a chest of drawers. Bed linens, blankets, pillows, and towels are also provided. The half-bath is off this bedroom and adjoins the full bath. Electric wall heaters provide auxiliary heat in the bedroom and bathrooms. The bedroom also has a couple of very small closets, which are the only clothes closets in the cabin. The staircase to the small loft is very steep and is not recommended for older guests or the very young. The loft is furnished with a double bed. A hiking trail and a gravel road will take you the 1/3-mile to the Tye River, but be warned — both are steep. You’ll need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to drive to the river. You’ll need good legs to walk back to the cabin. By the riverside you'll find a well-groomed recreation area with picnic tables shaded by a canopy of white ash and river birch, a fire ring, and, in the summer, even a porta-potty. A 'beach' is cleared to the river. At normal water levels, this spot on the Tye is appropriate for supervised child's play and for adult water recreation. Fishing is also fine! History has it that the Tye River was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite fishing stream. Rocky Run Landing is a good location to either begin or end a paddling or tubing trip on the Tye/James Rivers. A canoe is available for rental and your hosts can assist with planning river trips from one-half mile to 20 miles (overnight). Shuttle service is included with canoe rental. Tubes are also available for a lazy drift downstream. Charcoal grills may be requested for use at the cabin or in the riverside picnic area (guests provide charcoal). The screened porch offers a serene view of Buffalo Ridge to the south across the river (if the leaves aren't too thick). Turn on the porch ceiling fans, relax in the porch swing, and whistle back to the whippoorwills. As the evening gets quiet, let the roar of the Tye River rapids lull you to sleep. If you decide you’d like to forgo seclusion and venture into the outside world during your stay, many places of interest are within a day trip of Rocky Run Landing. Jeffersonian and other historic properties abound, Civil War sites are easily accessible, Wintergreen Resort offers a variety of activities, and kid-friendly excursions are within kid-tolerance driving distance. Your hosts will be happy to recommend itineraries based on your interests and will check with Wintergreen to ensure any desired activity is available. Weekend Trip to 12 Gates Farms

We stayed two nights in the treehouse while in the area for an event. We didn’t get to take full advantage of the property since we left in the mornings and arrived after dark both days, but enjoyed the time we spent there! We planned to camp at first, but the treehouse seemed like a better bet since the temperatures were cool in mid-April. It was at least ten degrees warmer inside than outside, which was perfect (so no need to even turn the heat on during our stay.) The mattress and bedding were comfortable and cozy. Everything was very quiet and peaceful. Roni was quick to answer questions and was very friendly and helpful. Neat little place and would definitely return!

The A-frame by the waterfalls was the perfect oasis I could ask for. The cabin was full of supplies, and the land was full of places to explore. Beau came to greet me, and he was very kind and helpful. Can’t wait to stay again next spring break!

Weekend Trip to Thunder BRidge

I didn’t really know what to expect from Thunder BRidge but this place is awesome! We chose the primitive cabin. But you can’t go wrong with anything here (cabin or camping) Having the pavilion and bath house nearby to use was helpful so you can either fully ‘rough it’ or have some level of home comforts. There’s plenty of room to run around in open spaces also a cool old school obstacle course. Cannot recommend this place enough! Adam is super helpful throughout your stay if you need anything! Need camping or cabins in the Natural Bridge area, look no further than Thunder BRidge!

Weekend Trip to Indian Camp Lane

The cabin was just what we were looking for. Simple, private and relaxing. We were shown to the site by a very sweet border collie who couldn't be more sweet. The cabin had everything you could want. Kitchen equipment, boardgames, firewood and plenty of cozy spaces to hangout in inside and out. We will absolutely be back.

This place is an absolute GEM! I was expecting a small cabin but was greatly surprised! Spacious screened in porch, full bathroom with shower and a kitchen that had everything we needed. The beach area was clean and peaceful; definitely recommend having 4-wheel drive coming up the road. Our large dogs (60lbs & 40lbs) were comfortable, plenty of room to walk them.

Weekend Trip to Beaverdam Falls

If you love the wilderness, being alone, exploring, and being unplugged, this place is absolutely for you. I stayed in an A-Frame cabin that had a direct view of the large waterfall. The campsite was fully equipped with absolutely everything I needed. Three different ways to cook, firepit, grill, and little stove. All of the utensils, pots and pans to cook with and dishes to eat from. A little camping toilet in the cabin. The ceilings were so amazing and the bed was very comfortable. The hosts were very VERY responsive and accommodating. I would 100% recommend this experience to anyone who needs to find themselves. It definitely provided my soul what it needed.

I had a beautiful stay at the 1 Bedroom Cottage at Sun Retreats Shenandoah Valley while I was attending my Inner Engineering program nearby. Even though I was very busy with my classes, I could still feel how peaceful and special this place is. The cottage was comfortable, quiet, and surrounded by beautiful nature, which made it the perfect place to rest and recharge. The property is large and full of natural beauty. I didn’t get the chance to explore everything because of my schedule, but what I experienced was wonderful. I would definitely love to come back and spend more time here exploring the grounds. Next time I plan to return with my kids and friends so we can fully enjoy the peaceful environment and everything this place has to offer. Thank you for a lovely stay. I would definitely come back again.

The cabin was amazing! We loved the outdoor fire pit, wood stove and the loft space. It kept us plenty warm and cozy during the cold nights and mornings. The creek on the property was great to sit and read a book by or to splash around. It is probably pretty epic in the warmer months. It was super quiet and welcoming. The pit toilet was super clean and functional which was great. We really enjoyed our stay! Meeting Bill, the dog, was a real highlight for our kids!

Weekend Trip to Altamont Farms

We loved the grand view cabin! Such an incredible view and cozy cabin. We also visited the farm and our 3 year old loved running around seeing all the animals. We loved winding down with the sun and getting cozy and warm with the wood burning stove on our December weekend. Would 100% stay again and Dan was very responsive and I really appreciated the minimal contact unless we needed something. It really allowed the perfect unplugging.
