This 1890's farm was many things in times long ago! It acted as a working Tobacco Farm, a country store and was known to have the purest spring in the region by the indians and mountain men! It also has a dark past complete with murder and moonshine! For a full history check out this book, Red Hill. The untold story of the Whitson Brothers and the Murder of Kit Byrd. The short version of the story: The farm also acted as a country store that was also a front for moonshine. The Whitson Brothers who owned our farm had a deal with Kit Byrd;  a mountaineer from "on the mountain" who had a knack for making good shine. It ultimately was the death of him at the hands of the 3 Whitson Brothers. This murder years later led to the death of a large percentage of the population in this small NC Mtn town. Learn more about this land:On a mountain by a river in a true "holler". This 1890's historic tobacco farm features our Root Cellar Tiny House, perfect for 2-4 people.  Full over Full Bunk Bed, Wifi,  AC/heater, tiny fridge,  small coffee maker, one car parking in front for easy access. Please keep that in mind and respect it. Throw trash away, don't leave out food or trash or you might wake to a big bear treat! Slow down when driving into the holler!Help us help our environment! The toilets and outdoor showers have been carefully planned out to be environmentally conscious, with special consideration to our creeks that drain into the Toe River. The "outhouse/camp" toilet has instructions so please read it and also has a foot pump hand cleaning sink beside it. The shower is an instant hot water shower heated by propane. While this space is not winterized it has some insulation and a propane heater. The Tiny can be rented during the winter for $68 a night good Nov-March.Guest accessGuests' space is a tiny house with a covered porch, attached bathroom, shower, covered outdoor kitchen, and one 2 person tent site. Gusher Knob is a 220+ acre forested mountain near Spruce Pine, NC. One of the campsites has a 12 x 12 raised platform for your tent (we don't recommend pitching a tent anywhere other than the platform), picnic table, fire pit, and a hook to hold a lantern. This first campsite on the property has a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A second campsite is more primitive (no picnic table or platform yet) is in a forested section with access to the Toe River. It is available now, but improvements are planned such as building a platform, adding a picnic bench and expanding the current fire pit. Please stay on the trails and the campsite areas as the surrounding land is private and monitored. Cell coverage is ok. Nearby hiking, climbing, and fly fishing are a few activities you will enjoy when visiting this lovely area of western NC. One campsite is a short 7-minute easy hike along a well-marked clear trail from the parking spot. The trail is non-technical and will mostly accommodate camping gear with wheels, such as a cooler. The other campsite takes a little longer hike to reach (10-minutes). Since it's situated in the woods, please be aware that you may encounter any number of nature's residents such as deer, squirrels, box turtles, wild turkeys, and bears. Please do not feed them and make sure to protect any food items appropriately. None of the natural residents has any interest in you personally, but they are known to be drawn to available food items.

Overview

About

At the base of Roan Mountain, this state park boasts more than 2,000 acres of mostly hardwood forest along rugged ridges where colorful wildflowers and wildlife, from black bears to osprey, make their home. Hikers can head out along the park’s 12 miles of hiking trails, mountain bikers can ride along the nearly three miles of biking trails, and anglers can fish for abundant brook, rainbow, and brown trout in the clear Doe River. The 106-site Roan Mountain Campground offers RV and tent camping, plus comfortable cabins.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. As Roan Mountain is a popular camping destination, booking in advance is highly recommended, especially on weekends.
  2. Booking can be easily done online or by phone and up to one year in advance.
  3. Double-check your dates before booking: There is a non-refundable booking fee.

When to go

The summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day is the park’s peak period, with many visitors arriving to enjoy the trails, warm weather, and blooming wildflowers. Roan Mountain is home to the largest natural Catawba rhododendron gardens in North America, which typically bloom in the third week of June, coinciding with the Rhododendron Festival. Though cool and often wet, winter promises cross-country skiing and birdwatching, as well as fewer crowds.

Know before you go

  • If you can’t find what you need in the park’s camp store, head just outside the park to Jack’s Petrol and Provisions.
  • Cell service is unreliable throughout the park, so download maps prior to arrival.
  • Only certified heat-treated firewood is allowed to enter the park.
