Overview

About

On the border between Minnesota and North Dakota, Red River State Recreation Area is just one of many awesome parks within the Greater Grand Forks Greenway. Double the size of Central Park, this stunning stretch of greenery was created as a grassroots recovery from a big 1997 flood. The Greenway holds back river waters now, on top of providing a sledding hill, basketball courts, softball fields, wildflower gardens, wildlife observation spots, and a 20 mile path for bikers, bladers, and joggers.

As if that’s not enough, the campgrounds here have Wi-Fi (!) and close access to downtown East Grand Forks. Craving a little more privacy? There are four walk-in campsites just steps from the riberbank, great for fishing from the shore. Arguably the best part of Red River, though, is the disc golf course just down the Greenway at Lincoln Drive Park, complete with a playground and dog park to keep the little ones happy while you toss.

When to go

The best time to visit Red River State Recreation Area is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer offers a full bloom of activities, though it can be quite warm. Winters are less ideal due to cold temperatures and limited access.

Know before you go

  • Highway 67 is permanently closed; follow alternative directions provided by the park for access.
  • Check in directly at your campsite upon arrival; park staff will assist you there.
  • Be prepared for a significant detour when traveling between different areas of the park.
  • Update your GPS with the latest park coordinates to avoid navigation issues.
  • Sign up for event updates to stay informed about park activities and any changes.
