The Larimore Dam Recreation Area and Myra Arboretum stand out as a unique destination in Grand Forks County, offering a blend of outdoor recreation, natural beauty, and family-friendly amenities. Nestled just off US Highway 2 along County Road 4A, this area is easily accessible and provides a serene escape for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Construction of the Larimore Dam began in June 1977 and was completed in November 1979, utilizing 333,749 cubic yards of fill. The dam rises 66 feet high and creates a stunning 72-acre pool with a storage capacity of 823 acre-feet, plus an additional flood storage of 4,911 acre-feet. The surrounding drainage area spans 43 square miles, making it a significant feature of the Upper Turtle River Watershed Project, also known as Larimore Dam-Structure 9. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including swimming at the designated beach area (pets are not allowed), leisurely canoeing or paddle boating on the pollution-free waters, and year-round fishing.
