34mi from Lava Beds National Monument · 1 site · Lodging · Macdoel, CA
We originally purchased the 20 acres of untouched land and built our cabin, the "Snug Shack," as a getaway from the city. Fast forward a few years, and 40 acres next door with an abandoned house on the canyon ridge went up for sale. We decided to purchase it and start a homestead there. That 40 acres where we now live was badly abused, and we have been in the process of cleaning up and restoring it. Fortunate for you, the land surrounding the Snug Shack was never abused and is still pristine and beautiful. By camping at the Snug Shack, you help support us in our mission to restore this beautiful place. We named our homestead after the rings of small oak trees that grow here on the ridge.: "Oak Ring Ridge." You can learn more about our project in progress at our website and instagram account: @oak_ring_ridge

One beautifully landscaped acre with a goldfish and tadpole pond, waterfall, large grass area and view of Mount Shasta from some areas. This is my private home. This is an extremely quiet spot with access through a private gate. It is a one minute walk from The Gateway Hiking and Biking trailhead and right on the way to Bunny Flat and further up the mountain. I do not have bathroom facilities, but I do have electricity and water. There is a covered cold water sink available to wash face/hands/dishes or to obtain drinking water. Winter reminder: We live at 4,000 ft and it is cold in the winter. There may be snow and you may need to do a little shoveling ( snow shovels are on property). Your vehicle should have all winter tires or chains, the campsite is not on a paved road and the site itself may not be plowed. The water to the cold water sink is shut off in the winter to avoid pipes freezing. There are no streetlights; we live in the country. There ARE lights at the property entrance gate.

Overview

About

There's no other park like this one. With more than 700 caves and a handful of craters, this is easily a natural wonder! There are amazing lava tube caves like the glowing gold walls of the Golden Dome to see. There's also the dangling icicles of the Skull Cave. But that's just the beginning.

It's like the National Park Service was kind enough to offer up a whole crash course in Geology 101. There are textbook examples of all kinds of earth treasures here. You'll come across creations like cinder cones, pit craters, volcanic fields. and more.

When you're done admiring the geology, take in some culture at Petroglyph Point. It's one of the largest panels of Native American rock art in the United States. The Modoc National Forest gets its name from the Modoc people that took refuge in the Captain Jack Stronghold cave here. Whatever you end up doing, you'll be sure to lav-a this national monument!

When to go

The ideal time to visit Lava Beds National Monument is during spring and fall when the weather is mild, making exploration comfortable.
