Located in the foothills of the Potomac Highlands, Buffalo Gap is a 1950s era former Mountain Kids Camp turned Retreat by a group of individuals who had a vision of creating a space where family and friends can enjoy a tranquil mountain get-away. Situated between two mountains -- Sandy Ridge and Slane's Knob -- Buffalo Gap sits in the gap between the two. Consequently, the 70 acre property is teaming with creeks and streams, along with a 1.5 acre spring fed lake, making it a peaceful and beautiful retreat from the daily stresses of life. Rent a cabin, camp, have a wedding or family reunion, enjoy our lakeview café, swim, hike, kayak, canoe, and so much more. With the nearby town of Capon Bridge just 10 minutes away and the Shenandoah Valley city of Winchester just 35 minutes, so much beauty and convenience with our Riverside town and nearby bigger city for additional dining and entertainment as well as conveniences.

Great atmosphere
Tent camping at the la view site was amazing. Close access to all amenities no beautiful views of the West Virginia countryside. I will definitely bring my family back here in the future. The hosts were very friendly and helpful as well. I would recommend this place to anyone who want to get away and relax.

Great experience. Polite n kind 2
I really enjoy our long weekend stress free in the camping tent site. Quite place, secure, lots of natural sounds such was birds, water stream. Shawn raised the bar setting a huge fire making a nice vibe. The only points that I would like to see the improvement is a bathroom/shower bit more close to the camping site. They are not far, but if you need to carry a small kid, is better to pick up thr car and drive. Other than that, everything was smooth. We got a rainy day and we decided to eat at the Cafe. Th good was really good. Everyone was super kind. If you have small kids, they will love the kayaking and fishing.

Beautiful spot and view of the lake. Liked the dog park and the bathrooms were very clean. Parking is separate from the lake campsites so just know you have to haul your stuff to the site, but it's not that far. Really enjoyed walking and lounging around the grounds with my huskies during the day.

Amazing personnel, very clean site, unbelievable amenities including hot showers, hot breakfast, sauna... My family, friends and I have been to many dozens of camp sites across the US and Eastern Europe. This one is in the top 5.

Last Minute Camping Trip!!
We did a last minute camping trip to Buffalo Gap and of course I forgot batteries for my air mattress pump! I spoke to one of owners who was so helpful and friendly, thankfully they had a foot pump to loan us! We stayed at campsite 29 it was perfect, beautiful tree for coverage, fire pit and picnic table. We brought our dog and we were happy to learn they had fenced in area for her to run around in. We sat by the pond that was so clear you could see the fish swimming around. We will be going back soon !

Family friendly camping resort
Buffalo Gap was an excellent spot! Cute little lake with kayaks, game room, clean bathrooms and showers. Nice staff. The restaurant was surprisingly good too. The campground was also very quiet at night, and lots of young families. We will be back!

Labor Day Weekend
Great spot to camp with family and friends. So many amenities. Feels like summer camp. We love the island large group camp, it perfectly suited our needs. Food at the cafe was tasty, especially the root beer float!

Nice flat spot, near creek with some shade. Great overall campground. Swimming in the lake is a highlight, especially if you have kids. And the dining hall (weekends, check calendar) means you don’t need to worry about cooking, which makes this a great spur of the moment destination.

Camping at an old summer camp!
Very close to the lake and private but no trees or shade. Buffalo Gap is a hidden Gem. They enforce quiet hours and the cafe, lake, hiking, and new spa are great fun!

Buffalo Gap was very clean and had a lot of things for campers to do. The lake had some algae in it, but nothing major. All in all it was a very good value!

Buffalo Gap "Nook" large group camp
Loved The Nook campsite!
Loved Buffalo Gap Retreat! My kids really enjoyed the kayaks and water toys available for use at the lake. The Berry picking trail was a little too steep/uneven for young kids and older folks, but perfect for seasoned hikers. We were very glad we could bring our dog, he had a blast! We rented The Nook campsite for our family and really loved the privacy and shade from the trees! It was just a short walk to the lake, bathhouse, and dining hall. Be aware, the campsite has lots of tree roots protruding from the ground, so again, not great for young kids or older folks. We had more than one incident with someone tripping in a tree root! We also had a difficult time finding a smooth enough area to pitch our tent, the kids did not have air mattresses, just camping pads, so they were a little uncomfortable. Next time we will bring tarps to protect the tent floor from being torn by roots and maybe a rug for inside the tent to make it more comfortable. One more thing if you are bringing young children, there is poison ivy EVERYWHERE! Of course we expected some, and there are signs warning to look out for it, but it was pretty hard to avoid at our campsite and the paths leading to other areas of the campsite. We used some large branches we found around the campsite to mark out "paths" through the campsite for our younger kids just so they didn't get too close to it, and we had to stay diligent when walking around the Retreat.

Buffalo Gap "Nook" large group camp
I think the location of the retreat and the surrounding area is beautiful. We had the group camping site, the Nook, which was private but the brick wall surrounding the site detracted from feeling like you were out in nature. The bathrooms were a disappointment because they were either out of order or not tended too (ie out of toilet paper). We camp a lot and most of the state campgrounds we have stayed in have better bathrooms than this retreat. The food in the hall was great and we were impressed with the coffee. I think this place could be a jewel if they invest in better bathroom facilities and make their camping spots more natural. The beach house near the lake needs more amenities because it’s useless as is. The equipment is dated and very worn and it really serves no purpose.

Simple and Sweet
The resort location is great and close enough to Capon Bridge. The campsites were large, and we were the only campers Easter weekend. The variety of birds was impressive for birders. The pond is was well-stocked with fish. We found the staff very attentive and accommodating.

Amazing campsite and service!
The reservation process, the site itself and the service were amazing. My family and friends went there in October 2021. In spite of clear forecast it was raining throughout the whole weekend and the camp offered service of dining in which was great and inexpensive.
