Close to Ithaca, NY, Cayuga Lake, and Cornell University. Once a snowshoe lodge, then a Boy Scout camp, this rustic cabin retreat property is surrounded by the Robinson Hollow State Forest. The 100 year old cabin sits only a few hundred yards from the Sierra Club section of the Finger Lakes Trail. The area is a peaceful spot for hiking, camping and snowshoeing or cross country skiing (October 1 bow season deer hunting begins, and mid-November to December is NYS gun deer season-which may not be as serene as you'd like). Note: This summer may be the last with exclusive access to the 150 acres above the cabin. (We sold to the State in 2019, and the state is beginning to plan for a driveway and parking lot giving public access to this new addition to the state forest. Perfect get-away for humans and their four-legged friends, it's a dog's dream vacation spot. Enjoy a week or weekend, or your vacation in a place where the "noise" is the melodious sounds of nature. It is remote enough to completely break from urban life, yet close enough to Ithaca, NY to enjoy its beauty and attractions. Amenities: outhouse, hand water pump, two-seater outhouse, propane grill, some pots and pans, grill utensils, wood stove, private, gated entrance, pond, trails. Sleeping loft, no bed (you provide mattress/sleeping bag, etc.). There may be candles, toilet paper, bug spray (if left by previous guests). We are an LGBTQ-woman owned property, and welcome all campers regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, political views, religion, or culture of origin. Onsite: water pump, 2-seat outhouse, wood stove, campfire ring, wood, & propane grill. Exclusive access for nature hikes, streams, forest, pond, swimming, bird watching, star gazing, etc. A wheelchair that can navigate grass and some ruts can enter the cabin, but not the outhouse, and the sleeping loft is up stairs (there is room for a cot or mattress on the first floor); the porch is accessible through the cabin. When you book, you are confirming your understanding of the following: there is no electricity, running water, or std. bed/mattresses. You bring own air mattress, bedding, and gear you will need. All-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. You'll have this Hipcamp all to yourself.

Campfires allowed
Firewood provided, firepit, wood burning fireplace, private. Propane grill on porch, and campfire pit on the side lawn (with safe camp fire and wood stove provided). NO fires allowed on other areas of the property away from the main cabin area.
Toilet available
Pit toilet. There is a two-seater outhouse on-site. If you choose to pitch a tent up on the hill, be ready to pack it out or dig a hole to leave no trace (there is wildlife in the area).
Pets allowed
Off leash. The beauty of our secluded retreat, is that there is nowhere that you and your pup can't go... most guests share that their dogs love to run full out through the fields, forest, and swim in the pond! Please pick up after your pets.
Potable water available
Pump or well. No running water. We drink the pump water, but do not promise that it is without expected rustic water pump containiments.
Showers available
Solar shower for outdoors only (fill the solar shower from the cold water pump, it heats in the sun, you attach to a tree for 3-5 min of warm/hot water). There is no private area designated for the solar showers.
Cooking equipment present
Grill over firepit, bbq. We provide a propane grill (and propane), a fire pit (and wood). There is also an indoor wood stove that you can heat water on. Bring matches, paper, your own paper plates, cooking utensils, cooler and ice. There are some pots, pans, and cooking items, but we do not guarantee their condition.
Picnic table present
There is an outdoor table under the overhang, and indoor picnic table. Bring lawn chairs to sit around the campfire ring.
Pack it out
Carry-in, Carry-out only. No burning of non-paper materials allowed. Please do not litter any items around the property, we value our wildlife and providing a safe environment for their healthy living.

A Perfect Place to Unplug
Round Top Retreat, rustic cabin
I spent the weekend at Round Top Retreat alone to unplug, relax, and recharge and it was exactly what I needed. The wood burning stoves did an excellent job at heating the cabin. It got below 40° at night but it was probably 60° inside with the fire going. The stove is also great for cooking. It was a little rainy during my trip so I did all my cooking indoors. The driveway continues uphill past the cabin and turns into a hiking trail. I think it's supposed to connect to the Robinsons Hollow State Forest Trail but I couldn't find it (the official trial head is just down the road). It was still an invigorating 2 mile walk. I spotted lots of birds and a couple deer.

One of my favorite HipCamps by far!
Round Top Retreat, rustic cabin
Perfect getaway for myself and my two poodles. My only regret is that I only booked one night. We will be back for sure, hopefully this year if there are weekends still available. The cabin is incredibly charming and it smells so good! Not sure what I expected, maybe earthy, musty smell? It felt like home. I am not necessarily a hardy, “rugged” girl and I felt the accommodations were perfect. The sleeping loft is so beautiful with the sky lights and the large back porch is wonderful for early morning coffee while feeling immersed in nature. My dogs and I hiked through the goldenrod fields approximately one mile up the hill- great little workout for me. We went into the forest as well, found really beautiful moss-covered trees and stumps. My standard poodle is a swim-a-holic and spent more of her time retrieving from the pond and practicing her dock-diving distance. Surprisingly, I had great cell phone service everywhere I went on the property. Overall, stunning place with the warmest, most welcoming host, Nancy, and we cannot wait to be back there!!

All Around Privacy

Had an enjoyable 3 nights here while in the area for the Cup Series race at Watkins Glen Intl. Definitely private. It's all yours to the top of the hill and there's a good buffer of forest between the cabin and the surrounding roads. The description and other reviews here are accurate. This is not glamping. It's camping, but with the convenience of solid walls, a roof over your head, and a wood stove for warmth. At least in early August, there were no biting bugs and minimal swarming bugs. Nothing a mosquito coil or Thermacell can't handle. It was cool in the shade even when the forecast was in the low 90's, but it does get hot in the cabin even with all the windows open. The solar shower is fun since you have little choice but to be naked out on the porch!

This is a special place, like an outpost of memories and history in Western New York that you rarely get to see these days if you're from a city. This place is full of memories, abundant nature, a beautiful view at the top of the hill, beautiful piles of firewood to keep you warm. It's an excellent balance of amenities and natural exposure to simple living without electricity and running water, with everything you could need to be warm, well fed and safe. It's very quiet, and it's just an awesome place to have an adventure with someone you love. I highly recommend it and I know I'll certainly be back.

Great cabin, so big, surrounded by beautiful forested land. Really nice that firewood was there for us to use in the fire pit and the indoor stove. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a real camping experience with just a bit of extra shelter.

We came out here expecting a cozy little cabin away from the city and that's exactly what we got. Host was excellent. Gave us clear directions on how to get there and what we should look out for. The cabin itself was very nice. Kept us nice and warm during the rain/light snowfall we had. My friends were a bit put off by having to use an outhouse and some of the deer decore that was in the cabin, but they managed to survive. I think this is a great place as long as you know what to expect and come prepared. Thanks again for hosting us!

This was a fantastic spot for myself, my fiancé, and a group of friends! The wood burning stove inside kept the cabin perfectly roast and cozy, despite the rainy weather. The land was gorgeous, and the property is perfectly private, tucked away in the woods. There was an amazing amount of wood for cooking and heating, and we enjoyed splitting some for kindling! Nancy was very responsive and helpful, and we didn’t have trouble finding the spot or getting set up. If you want a cabin stay that’s on the wonderful, rustic side rather than the glamping side, I absolutely recommend this spot!!

Overall this was a wonderful getaway. We visited in late August. The privacy, views, and the nearby attractions. Our dog had a blast. Nancy allows ATVs! 😊 The cabin was as described. The skylights offer plenty of light during the day and early evening. Some areas could use some TLC. There were spider webs and nests under the chairs and tables. I was hanging string lights and getting webs in my hair. There was a broom available, so we did some extra cleaning. (I didn't mind. That's rural life) However i'd recommend, if paying a cleaning fee, that they do a deep clean once in a while. Some webs were black from stove soot(most likely there since winter). There's plenty of table space and ledges on the windows for your belongings. The large round table has a broken leg and is leaning on one of the wall. (Be careful not to put too much weight on that) The floor is concrete but clean. There's also a locking cabinet to keep mice away from food. There's 2 sets of sliding doors and all of the windows open for plenty of breeze. (The screens are torn in spots) The grass was freshly mowed. Lots of firewood and a fire pit with a sturdy grate. The grill on the back porch had plenty of gas. (Some broken railings around) The only major issue were the snakes. They are living in the walls as Nancy described. Not only milk snakes though. I'm assuming it was the time of year for the amount we saw. Maybe we will try a winter visit instead 😊

Nancy was kind & communicative, both before our adventure and during :) The site is off-grid and rustic as described. Broken (patched) window downstairs, and broken spindles on the staircase and loft railings gave us pause. Nancy's directions were excellent: we'd recommend reading them THOROUGHLY, and arriving before dark. We had been to an escape room (lots of puzzles & clues & locks) for a birthday celebration. After dinner, we drive up to the camp around 9:30pm--we miss the driveway at first as Nancy had kindly warned, but her instructions put us right back on track. Park to unlock the gate... a ghost girl (6yo?) appears on the boulder in front of house across the street, wrapped in a blanket, watching us silently. We wave, no response, and continue to work on gate lock. Lock wasn't working! Ghost girl moves to our driveway! Checked Nancy's instructions: we were trying the wrong lock! Correct lock already mysteriously open, but happy to expedite escape from ghost girl. Up the long, dark, forested driveway, 3 girls start freaking out. Get to camp, pitch dark with headlights illuminating creepy water pump and broken window. Get to door with next combo lock code in my head already... but it's a key padlock?! Check Nancy's notes again: oh! THE KEY IS LOCATED ON THE BACK WALL OF THE OUTHOUSE?!?! No way! Fine, we all go together. Lock box won't work. Message Nancy: "look for key rock." No key rock anywhere. Nancy came at 10:15pm and saved us! Slept well :) Good story!

What a great find! Beautiful, rustic cabin in an amazing location. Loved listening to the birds or rain falling (bonus nice and dry unlike tent camping) without a single sound of civilization. Loved the hikes and my dog Sasha loved the pond and her unsuccessful frog hunting. Would love to come back

Wilderness with a touch of home

Nancy's cabin is an excellent spot for wildlife watching! We saw frogs, toads, snakes, salamanders, and even a pair of American Woodcock, plus the call of barred owls at night under the stars. If you are used to backpacking or tent camping, this cabin feels like the lap of luxury. If you're used to Glamping, be ready to feel more connected to nature than usual. Love the freedom available for dogs, and hiking the property was a treat. The propane grill works great, and there was plenty of wood left for a fire. BYO light sources and water jugs, but Nancy is very clear in her check-in instructions about what you might need.

It was the perfect spot for a weekend get away. We found the fire places, water pump, and outdoor fire ring to be extremely charming. The property was gorgeous and well maintained. Definitely recommend! My dog loved sleeping next to the stove!

We Loved This Little Spot

Nice balance of seclusion and convenience. Cabin is rustic but clean. Proprietor is gracious and accommodating (gave us TONS of fire wood, more than we could possibly use…and we usually go through a lot). This location is a great base to come back to and relax by a fire after checking out the local waterfalls and adjacent state parks.

Great rustic escape. Host is responsive and provides a great suggested packing list. We wanted the opposite of the city for a few days & this did the trick for us. If you are visiting in the winter, bring your warm cozy clothes, get ready to tend your fire, split wood, mind the packing list & enjoy!!!

We loved our stay! The place was perfect for our family gathering of adults and kids. The place is rustic in the right way and cozy with all the basics you need for a glamping weekend. The wood stove kept the place toasty and was easy to cook on and there was plenty of wood for an outdoor fire, too. Easy drive to Ithaca and some good hikes. Nancy was a very responsive host and a pleasure to correspond with. We'd love to stay again.

Wonderful Stay
Round Top Retreat, rustic cabin
The directions provided made the cabin very easy to find. Our stay was very peaceful, with just the quiet sounds of the wildlife surrounding us. The cabin is kept clean and was the perfect size for the two of us and our pup. We really enjoyed sitting on the back porch in the morning, it made for a nice view. It was cool watching the little birds in the trees just outside the cabin. There is plenty of wood provided for campfires and the wood stoves. The trail behind the cabin makes for a nice hike, on the way back down the mountains are a beautiful view, especially with all the leaves changing in the fall. The pond behind the cabin is just a short walk and our pup really enjoyed swimming in it on the warmer days.

A little underwhelming for the cost

We enjoyed the location and the cabin is a great space. For how expensive it is however, we felt that the maintenance could have been a bit better. Most notably, the place could use some cleaning and maintenance (the railings are broken in multiple places, the sleeping space was pretty dusty, and the outhouse could do with a good spider sweep between visits). Additionally, there was minimal wood left inside to dry, and the rest was in a wet heap just outside the woodshed. Again, we did enjoy the rustic weekend away from electricity, but for $150 a night we felt that the things included should be exceptional.

A very solitary place in the world. We loved our stay for one night. The trail above the cabin takes you to a beautiful pond.

Round Top Retreat, rustic cabin
We stayed in the thick of winter, which meant hauling our gear up to the cabin on a sled, in snowshoes. It was well worth the effort to enjoy being cozy in the cabin, stoking the fire and enjoying the beautiful winter scenery surrounding us. We stayed warm with the wood burning stove, even during 10 degree temperatures outside. Nancy was super responsive to all our inquiries. This is a gem of a place and we made some great memories staying here.

Coziest cabin for winter camping!

We came for a nice Christmas trip! It was COLD, extremely cold outside but the Wood burning stove kept us so warm. We made Yummy chicken soup on top of the stove, along with some roasted veggies and had a pot of warm water for tea, coffee and hot cocoa. We watched movies on our the projector and popped popcorn. It was such a great experience! It felt like indoor camping! Perfect for the winter!! It was so amazing that Nancy provided things like the hatchets, grill and little odds and ends. She really went above and beyond and I hope to make it back for the summer!!! One thing I would bring next time is a propane space heater. That would have been perfect for when the nights drop below/near freezing temps!

Gorgeous and Rustic
Round Top Retreat, rustic cabin
The cabin was exactly as described… The only challenge was that with the recent snow and rain there was a ton of mud between the cabin and the outhouse, but I made do. Nancy was a fabulous host and I highly recommend this camping experience!
