Hosts are happy to take questions before, during, or after your stay. Narrative about Selby Farm: Selbys have lived on this farm since 1990. Doug and Brenda are retired from teaching at nearby public schools. Our Farm is now dedicated to boarding retired horses for their owners. We practice rotational grazing for the health of the horses and the health of our pastures. The horses live in a herd as they would in the wild. Basically, they are hanging out with their friends! They also get regular care and feed and so are VERY happy. You will see and probably interact with the horses if you wish. They are guaranteed to come closer if you have treats like carrots and apples slices. Our quiet county road used to be the main road along the river. A hundred years ago it was called "Shanty Road". The shacks that were along it housed workers that harvested food from farms in the river bottom. The only evidence of those shacks now is perrenial flowers growing in unusual places. The area is inhabited by professionals working in nearby towns and cities. In fact there are only five homes along our 1.5 mile section of Copps Chapel Road. The native Americans who used this area did so because of the great diversity of wildlife and availability of water. Also the view is amazing in all directions. Was using this ridge top encampment for security, or just because the view is so satisfying? The Missouri River is on the far side of the bottoms now, but has been very close historically. There is also a large spring flowing from a cave nearby. These river hills are composed of soils blown in from the end of the last ice age. Being near the river, erosion has cut down the surrounding area making the scenic topography associated with Missouri River valleys and river hills.

Sleep in (or under) the biggest White Oak in Moniteau County. We currently allow only one party at a time at this premium location. You will be the only party to use the area during your stay. It is very private. The view is incredible and unobstructed. Sunrises and sunsets are beautiful. Ten minutes from I-70. Most campers set up under the tree and just hang out in the treehouse. However, some campers with a smaller tent choose to camp in the treehouse. The tree house is not a house until you put your tent on it. It is a deck that is well made and has solid guard rails. The location is over 300' from our residence and is very private. In spite of the remoteness, free high speed Wi-Fi is available at the site. Cell phone service has been good for campers so far too. The view is amazing in ALL directions. Native Americans used this location heavily as evidenced by abundant stone artifacts. They were the original campers here. The best view is of the Missouri river bottoms. I'm sure this is why the Native Americans used this site. Wildlife is abundant. It is usually very quiet except for the frogs, birds, coyotes, and crickets. There is a water hydrant about 150' away. We have a full size, but not ADA, portable toilet at the barn.

This is our best site. If you want power for AC, book this site early. This is our only site with 30 amp electric and water. Site 1 is long enough to accommodate a Class A pulling a car or long camper. A minimal amount of leveling may be required depending on how you position. There is room to disconnect from either end of your rig if you want to explore the area with your vehicle. I highly recommend a two night stay to get the most out of your visit. It also has a fire pit. A small amount of firewood for one fire is provided at no extra cost. The site has a great view.

This is on an undeveloped, but well mowed grassy area. You will have access to the porta-pottie. You can use a shared hydrant for filling bottles, washing hands etc. You may find an empty electrical outlet where you can charge a device. Priority use for electric and water however goes to campers who are in a higher cost RV site. Site 7 is close to the horses and has great views. No extra services are promised. Ask shortly before arrival about upgrading your location. It may be possible to give you a more developed empty site if it is not close to another party.

Site 2 is excellent for vans or smaller campers. This site is the owner's favorite because it has the best view for seeing horses and spotting wildlife crossing the pastures. The site can physically accomodate a large camper, but the electric connection doesn't have sufficient power to run a large camper. Plan on using your quiet generator if you have large power needs. It has a 20 amp/ 110 volt electric outlet. This is a normal grounded plug in like you would find in a house. Your dedicated power outlet will run one small air conditioner… but not all of your appliances simultaneously. Water is available at a shared hydrant so please connect to the splitter so as not to monopolize the water. You can orient your RV in either direction on this site. Firewood (for one fire per rented night) is included with the rental.

This site will accomodate any size camper but no power or water is on the site. It is ideal for someone who is moving and has several vehicles. Site 4 is long enough accommodate a long Class A pulling a car or long pull- behind camper...Plus a few additional vehicles. It has a shade tree on the north side of the site. The shade tree is a good spot for your picnic table. No table or fire pit is available at this time. It is a loooong level pull through site. Built in generators are allowed, but no stand alone generator please unless you can convince the owner that it is VERY quiet. It is important to STAY LEFT when entering the area. This will take you past a power pole. Then, circle clockwise into the site. If you do this, no backing is necessary.

Doug and Brenda were amazing host! They were flexible with our late evening arrival time and checked on us every day. We learned a lot about their farm from themselves and their farm hand, Johnny. We got to feed all the animals, pick and keep chicken eggs and venture around the whole farm each day. We went when it was very cold and they made sure we had enough firewood to stay warm. They were wonderful to meet and get to know! We were inspired to eventually have a farm and animals of our own one day when we can settle down. Also, the stargazing was amazing!

We had a great time camping around the giant oak tree, which is scenic and impressive. There was plenty of room on level ground to set up our tents. Doug was an attentive host, too. We appreciated the Solo Stove campfire setup on a cold night. The whole area is beautiful in the fall. I wish we had more time to explore. Maybe next time!

Great scenic quiet camping with the horses! Doug and Brenda are great hosts and have a beautiful property. I walked the trails and the gravel road and had a great time. I would definitely stay here again!

Shelby Farm was very relaxing and tucked away just far enough to feel the solitude with nature. No road noise, horns beeping, or distant sirens. Great spot to just sit back and take it all in. Doug was very responsive and although we didn’t get a chance to meet, I felt he went out of his way to make sure my stay met expectations.

Amazing views along with beautiful horses! I enjoyed my stay at the Shelby Farm Horse Retirement Stables! Such beautifully maintained grounds and an extremely nice host! Truly an amazing helper Johnny who was a life saver ❤️ we needed a jump and he was there to help! Doug and Brenda are very responsive and helped me get my questions answered swiftly! We really enjoyed our stay and especially felt at home. If your looking for a quiet place to camp with a beautiful view, come here! We can't wait to come again!

The drive from the interstate was a bit intimidating in the dark for an over-60 flatlander. But, it was beautiful in the morning... just like their property & the horses! So, if you see better in daylight & are used to straight, flat roads... just try to arrive before dark. Their property felt safe & away from it all. Very quiet. You can see lots of stars!

Very quiet and pretty place to stay! We got there very late and it was pretty easy to find. Easy for a class B RV to get to. Doug and Brenda were so nice and accommodating! There were other campers there, but it was still peaceful. Would definitely stay again!

This place is a hidden gem. Water and electricity on site were easy and accessible. Horses were friendly and the view was amazing. Owner met us on site and was extremely nice to talk with and accommodating. If we have to go back to Columbia we will hang out here.

Had a great overnite stay on the property and really appreciated the host's helpfulness and hospitality. Upon arrival we got to see dozens of horses welcoming us for the nite - was a real treat on a beautiful nite! Stayed at the Oak tree site which had a great view of the surrounding area. Very Peaceful. Would definitely stay again!

Amazing spot! We got in late and woke up to such beauty. The hosts were communicative before arrival (we were monitoring some storms that blew in and delayed our travel), and in the morning we met the caretaker, Johnny, who was pleasant and a joy to speak with. Thanks, and we’ll be back again!

Beautiful well-maintained property, very peaceful, clean porta-potty close by, and easy site to pull into from either side. We loved the horses and we saw owls too!! Doug was very helpful and gracious guiding us to our site in the dark. We only stayed one night and left early in the morning but wish we had more time! Highly recommend!

Great location! Treehouse was so much fun, the horses and chickens on the farm were friendly and we loved seeing them every morning. Owners were kind and accommodating. There is a fire pit with grill, picnic table, some miscellaneous tools for last minute mishaps, and a charcoal grill at the site. Firewood is also available. Port-a-potty not far. Thank you for a great stay! We will be back.

What a beautiful, quiet, interesting camp spot. The tree is enough, but there’s more: happy horses, native history… I had perfect weather in late August. The hosts were super communicative and friendly and helpful. I had a really wonderful stay! Thank you!
