Discover the most magical spots to pitch your tent or park your rig on your next Longhorn Cavern State Park adventure.
A unique cavern with a rich history and CCC architecture wow in Texas Hill Country. Â
Set near Burnet less than 90 minutes from Austin and atop a series of scenic limestone hills, the National Cave of Texas is the main draw at this central Texas state park. A unique cavern formed by the cutting and dissolving action of an ancient river, this underground wonder has a rich history, formerly serving as a Comanche meeting room, a Cold War bunker, and even a nightclub. Guided tours let visitors explore 130 feet below the surface. Other Longhorn Cavern State Park attractions include stellar examples of historic Civilian Conservation Corp architecture, hiking trails, and picnic areas. Longhorn Cavern is a day-use only park, but nearby Inks Lake State Park offers camping options.
Underground temperatures stay at a constant 68°F, making the cavern a cool escape on a hot summer day. Two tours are available, with one lasting 90 minutes and the other two to three hours long. Itâs best to buy tickets ahead of time, especially on weekends and holidays. The cavern is also open an extra hour on summer weekdays. The park is open year-round, except for December 25.
