Wild Yough is located in Southern Garrett County, Maryland very close to Herrington Manor State Park, Swallows Falls State Park, and the quaint mountain village of Oakland. The property adjoins thousands of acres of Garrett State Forest and hundreds of acres of state land along the Youghiogheny River. The world class Wisp resort and Deep Creek Lake are only minutes away. “Yough” is short for Youghiogheny River a state designated wild and scenic river which runs through the heart of the property. Wild Yough Glamping huts are part of more than 350 acres of private land, most of which is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails. Youghiogheny is an Algonquin word meaning “a stream flowing in a contrary direction”, or in the case of the Yough, North toward Ohio Pyle and Pittsburgh. This section of the river is designated as a protected scenic corridor and you will feel the quiet isolation when sitting on the Crooked Butt Bench overlooking the big horseshoe bend in the river at the far back corner of our property. And if the river is low during your visit, feel free to wade across to the other side – Wild Yough owns the entire peninsula of land on the other side of the river and this is also bordered by State land.The river banks are steep on the property, but the fishing for small mouth bass is exceptional. There is a small turn around on the path just beyond Crooked Butt Bench where you can take out your canoe, kayak, or inner tubes after floating the 2+ miles from the Oakland bridge. Just be prepared to walk your water craft back up to the house or Glamping site as there is no motorized access to the river.If you like to lay on the rocks in the sun or take the kids for some wading in the river, the best place is the farthest to walk to. Ferns in the Forest

Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property in 2024. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to the beginning of October and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail.

Rendezvous Farm

This raw forested land bordering George Washington National Forest on two sides was purchased in 2002. Over the next six years a 2 acre pasture and .8 acre house site were cleared on weekends, a small pond was dug, additional land was cleared and a wildlife planting made, then our home and multiple outbuildings were constructed. We began raising chickens for meat and eggs, as well as rabbits, quail, doves and pigeons, and developed two vegetable and fruit gardens to provide food for ourselves and to sell at farmer's markets. The property is a state certified Wildlife Partners Habitat because of the many improvements made for wildlife. Allen and Peggy were married atop a special rock on the property in 2004. NOTE: For the late summer and fall of 2023 the pond is almost dry. We haven't had enough rain to keep enough water in it.
