This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. The metal trash bin next to the sani-can is for your use - please do not use any other trash cans in or outside of the barn as these are for events only. You will also find a wood firepit and chairs available for use right beside your site. Please bring your own wood to, or feel free to purchase wood through this listing. Also feel free to enjoy the covered seating area alongside the west side of the barn, overlooking the animals, gardens and expansive valley view! We are also situated less than a 10-minute drive away from an easily accessible dump station in Port Ludlow, on the way to the Hood Canal Bridge. Please understand that we are a working farm that hosts businesses and other visitors. You will most likely see us and perhaps other guests during your stay! Our home is further down the driveway (to the south of the barn) and we have land mates and an Airbnb unit attached to our house. You will likely hear the sounds of farm projects, animals and people at times. We also live off the busy Beaver Valley road, making us an ideal location for access to the greater Peninsula, but also please know that you may notice road noise at times during your stay with us. We are not in a remote area that is completely silent - we are a bustling farm in a happening place. Weekend Trip to the Rhizosphere

Very peaceful sanctuary in the forest. The sounds of the forest so alive and happy. .Tyson was very helpful and friendly. The outhouse is so cool and unique. Everything is creatively done in natural ways and integrated into the flow of the space, which I love. It felt like my journey needed that kind of rest stop. Top Of my list for when I’m back.

Weekend Trip to High Hopes Farm

Very peaceful and nice location to Crescent Beach and a variety of recreation . Janelle was very helpful and made sure I was settled in ok. Both the options for camping are great and there is space and nature surrounding. Flynn the resident dog visited respectfully and we took a walk at dusk. It was nice to know he was around being so shepherdly sweet and friendly. I’ll be back.

Weekend Trip to Pacific Rim Institute

Great spot on the middle of the island. Quiet and peaceful. No power but clean and dry. Fire pit offered a great spot for an evening campfire. Very clean, cots for sleeping. Bring headlamps. Running water, shower and toilet clean and about 60 - 80 yds from the cabin. Great host and spot!

After a few nights of camping in the rain Tyson’s Hipcamp was just the reprieve we were looking for! The property was easy to access, had plenty of amenities, and Tyson even had a fire going for us when we got there! Tyson was super helpful and easy to communicate with. We would absolutely stay here again!

Van camping in the Nook at Elwha was quiet and peaceful! The hosts were super accommodating of my last minute vehicle change and helped me find a place that would fit a large campervan. The bathroom was warm, which was perfect for showering after a week on the road, but also a bit far from my campsite (an oversight on my part). I’m not sure if this is normal, but both porta-jons near me were locked- didn’t have a chance to ask the hosts about it since I was mostly away during operating hours. Having WiFi was a nice surprise, which helped me stay in the loop about events planned at the fungi festival. Overall, Very nice amenities and hosts!

Weekend Trip to Frog's Leap Lane

Courtney’s land is a rustic, peaceful oasis conveniently located near town yet feels tucked away in the middle of nature. We had our boat hauled out at Jensens on San Juan to do some routine bottom paint and maintenance. It was wonderful to have an affordable accommodation to camp at with our pup while we were on this island. Courtney was helpful and kind allowing us to extend our stay as our job took longer than anticipated. We will definitely stay here again the next time we haul our boat out or camp on San Juan. Thank you Courtney for sharing this space with us.

4 nights at Beaver Valley Retreat

I spent six days on the farm in late September, and it was excellent. Such a beautiful, special place. I loved being neighbor to the goat men, and having my morning coffee in their company. I highly recommend the farm tour; it was awesome to have Grace show me around and tell me the farm’s stories. So good!! Also the soap. I really really loved the goat soap. :)

Weekend Trip to Elwha RV Park

We tent camped on site T18. The signage was amazing and we never felt lost, unlike at some other HipCamps we have been to. The facilities were clean, showers hot. Plus, our car battery died and the owners came out and helped us at 6 in the morning, which just shows what good people are running this place. 10/10 would recommend and definitely plan on coming back next year!

Weekend Trip to Beaver Valley Retreat

We love this farm and the goats and people who live there. The goats are hilarious, the greenhouse dome filled with exotic fruit is inspiring. Invest in the farm tour as well, it is well worth it if you love plants and farms like we do. Wonderful as usual! Thank you so much!

Tyson was an excellent host and went out of his way to accommodate us. The property and site were in great condition, and the communal cooking area was enjoyable to use. The composting toilet setup was one of the nicest I’ve used. Overall I’d definitely recommend this site!

Location was excellent. Listing described it perfectly. We stayed in site 6. One neighbor to one side of us. Close to the bathrooms and hot showers! We got to pet the cows. Cheryl was friendly and answered our questions with ease. We will definitely spend another weekend here!

We had two lovely nights. The farm has an incredible tropical greenhouse as well as humorous, friendly goats. We explored the farm, went on walks and relaxed at our campsite. It's only about 20 minutes to Port Townsend. We walked through the historic district and Fort Worden, then came back to our campsite to chill. This spot is really unique. It's just off the highway but feels like it's miles into the country. Bonus that it only has one spot so we had the farm to ourselves. We'll definitely be returning!

Weekend Trip to the Rhizosphere

We had a wonderful time camping at Tyson’s! The site has a communal kitchen, picnic table, and fire ring. Even with another party camping, it was easy to share the amenities without any issues. The kitchen is well equipped with a sink, a gas stove and a Blackstone, though you’ll want to bring your own pots and pans. We were pleasantly surprised by the shower—the hot water and water pressure were excellent. Everything was clean and well maintained, and there’s both potable and non-potable water available.

My stay at High Hopes Camp was beyond amazing! The location is absolutely perfect—close enough to town for convenience, yet it feels completely removed from all the stressors of the city. Janelle was an incredible host and such a pleasure to chat with. I noticed some reviews mention the dog—let me just say, he’s a total superstar and made the experience even better. I would definitely recommend this camp spot to anyone looking for a peaceful and memorable stay.

We had a fabulous time on Janelle’s beautiful property, where we camped in our tent for 2 nights. Janelle welcomed us and was extremely friendly, this being our first time camping in the area. We were very comfortable; there were even extra chairs and tables Janelle let us use for cooking and relaxing; as well as a full toilet and water setup. The area was peaceful and beautiful with some bird wildlife and a very friendly dog Flynn. Highly recommend staying here! Thank you Janelle.
