This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. We have a Native Plant Center where we grow up to 50 species of rare native plants. Ask us for a tour.

Great spot on the middle of the island. Quiet and peaceful. No power but clean and dry. Fire pit offered a great spot for an evening campfire. Very clean, cots for sleeping. Bring headlamps. Running water, shower and toilet clean and about 60 - 80 yds from the cabin. Great host and spot!

We stayed at Natalie’s for three days and it was an amazing, magical place in a quiet neighbourhood. We visited in November and believe me, the foliage season is just the best here. The convenient location near shops, a gas station, and an outlet also adds to the overall experience. The host was amazing and the place was incredible!

We had a nice overnight stay, arriving after dark on short-notice. Host greeted us and helped us park. You camp next to a large garage. Site was mostly level (with what felt like a slight lean away from the garage). Quiet area , with the exception of train horns a few miles away.

We absolutely loved staying here. We booked Drive in site #13 and it was private and super cozy! Bathroom and hot shower was + + + The host was really accommodating and has an incredibly beautiful garden we were able to utilize at mealtimes. Would definitely stay here again in the future!

I highly recommend booking this site. They have plenty of room and you can pick where you would like to set up. We chose to be in the trees closest to the creek, but you can be in the sun also, if that's your preference. A path leads to the creek which is a beautiful spot to relax. Marlisa met us when we arrived and was very accommodating and gave us all the information we needed to make our stay easy and enjoyable. A clean outhouse was available and close, if you need one. It was a short drive to US-20 but still very quiet at night.

Super fun to sleep in a pheasant coop! We talked all night by candle light when we were not outside looking at the stars. They are restoring a prairie, the trails would have been interesting but we had no time. Bathroom was great.

This spot is unique—sleeping in a converted pheasant brooding house and being able to explore the acreage was cool. It’s also nice to feel connected in some way to the mission of Pacific Rim Institute. Three slight drawbacks. 1) Practically no shade. There’s one tree at the head of the brooding house row. Other than that, you chase the rotating shadow of the shack or spend a few hours in the forest. Maybe use the afternoon to visit Fort Ebey or Rhododendron Park (both close). Around here, no shade is usually no biggie. But when I was there in August with direct afternoon sun on the south side, it was tough. 2) The shower room was not cleaned and was unusable.

What a fantastic place to reconnect with nature. Walking the paths through the fields and forest at sunrise and sunset was absolutely everything. The little hut was charming and access to simple amenities was great. Fair warning, Monday through Thursday be prepared for the appalling screams of war machines overhead practically non-stop but weekends are a delight (host did provide a heads up so went into it knowing that was a possibility) will definitely visit for a weekend again!

What a perfect cabin and cot to spend a couple of nights. Nice table out front for dinner and morning coffee and so close to Coupeville! This is a working space, so they are out and about early and late, but it is still very quiet and the walking trails and dark skies cannot be beat on Whidbey. If you time your visit right, there are blackberries growing on the bushes.

This was such a peaceful place. I think it is amazing that they have opened up the property to public use, and also that only one party is there at a time. The cabin was delightful, and mattress pads were comfy. I would definitely come again.

Enjoyed this unique site on Whidbey Island. The cabin/shelter was perfect for our needs including travelling with our dog. The restroom and shower were clean and a short walk away. The grounds were beautiful open spaces and because we were the only hipcampers onsite, it felt very private. We found our regular sleeping bags were ideal overnight (early July stay), and the cots provided were comfortable. The location was great for exploring the island!

Weekend Trip to Pacific Rim Institute

I had a great time here! Laurie was very responsive and friendly when answering all of my questions. The coop stayed warm enough for me throughout the night, and wasn't too hot during the day. I loved the brochure they left in the room, and had fun exploring the paths laid out in the map and saw a lot of flora and fauna. It was really beautiful watching the sun set across the golden fields and the shadow cast on the two lines of coops. I would love to come again and give myself more time to explore everything. Awesome find!
