Purple Cottage Studio

The *Purple Cottage* -- was found & salvaged (recycled!)-- moved onto the back of my property in 2012. This 16 X 12' place has been my studio in the past, but has offered overflow for friends & family. Nestled in the woods and ever-so-private, the cottage has a pull-out double futon, plus a small sleeping loft and can accommodate 1 -2 nicely (we will consider 3 if you have a small child, but it would be a tight fit!... There is a very small sleeping loft in the cottage.). The cottage offers privacy in a wooded garden setting. The bathhouse, with hot shower, vanity & toilet --all steps away (and covered) from the main cabin. The Purple Cottage sits on a shy wooded acre, with greenbelt buffers all around, maximizing the sense of privacy. We have a vintage Shasta Trailer across the driveway of the Purple Cottage, which is currently used as a music studio (and rarely as family/guest overflow), and I have my own small Artist Studio located also on the back of the property. Still, with all the little enclave of buildings, the Purple Cottage Studio retains a private feel all to itself. It is located in a quiet little neighborhood, about 6 miles from Langley & 6 miles from Freeland.. Private beach access is across the road and a 15 minute walk up the street, where you can beach comb & explore the shoreline out at our little point. We are located 6 miles from the picturesque town of Langley and equal distance from Freeland, on the south end of Whidbey. Our area is very *bike-able* and either direction will get you to town! The Purple Cottage offers a rustic retreat in a place that feels far away, but is an hour & a half from the bustling city of Seattle! There is reliable wifi available (especially now that the cottage has it's own line!) at the cottage, as well as a CD player. Beach access is a short walk away.

Cottage near the Strait

In 1883 Elliot Cline purchased the acres which once was home to the original New Dungeness. He laid out a town on the bluff above the sandy spit which curves out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Across from the farmhouse used to be a village church, the first county courthouse and the local blacksmith's shop, among other businesses and homes, including two hotels, several stores, and saloons. In 1890 the County Seat was moved to Pt. Angeles and the town swiftly declined. In 1892 the farmhouse was built, and in 1934 the beautiful bow truss barn was built. A former owner, Mr. Steel, had the barn rebuilt to modern day standards and the new owners use it occasionally for events and art workshops. Tours of the barn are available upon request.

Incredible location! This sweet cabin is nestled at the base of Mt. Jupiter, directly between Dosewallips beach and the Olympic national Park. There's lots of gorgeous, mossy maples, shaggy cedars, and elk herds roaming free. The Cabin is easily accessible from the road, and has parking available. There's a secluded fire pit behind the cabin with a seasonal stream running by. Its a relaxing place to hang out for a few days, and/or excellent basecamp to explore the amazing forests, mountains, and beaches nearby. Also, there's lots of great foraging to be done (nettles, mushrooms, and oysters; oh my!) GPS LOCATION: When driving to the cabin, your GPS will tell you that 'your destination is on the left'. This is a lie. The cabin will be on the right. There is a metal gate that is closed with a chain but not locked. CABIN LAYOUT AND SLEEPING AMENITIES: The Cabin is just a little guy; only 16'x20'. There is a kitchen, living room, and dining room area, and the bathroom is a separate room - we call it our 'studio cabin'. We have a fold out couch for which we provide linens, pillows, and a comforter. There is also an inflatable mattress that is a tight squeeze, but can allow for four people to sleep (with a little furniture rearranging). There is a deck that is large enough for a two person tent that would also make a four person camp-out comfortable. All linens and towels are stored in the trunk and the bathroom cabinet. There is a 4' round dining room table with four chairs and a small table on the porch with two more chairs. All the cushions for the chairs are in a cabinet under the table inside. ACCESSIBILITY: Unfortunately, the cabin is not wheelchair accessible. There are 5 stairs up to the deck and the bathroom door is only 27" wide. SURROUNDING AREA: There are small trails leading away from the cabin; do not walk down them! They lead to neighboring properties and I cannot guarantee that there won't be neighbors who would be very surprised by a stranger showing up on their land! There are lots of public trails only a few minutes drive in either direction from the property :) STOLEN LAND: This property is on stolen, indigenous land. If you are Coast Salish or Makah, please get in touch with me for a discounted stay.

Go on a fishing trip in many great rivers and lakes and salt water in the sound. A million frogs croak at spring and summer! Black bears won't bother you, if you see one. They're shy, leave them be. Coyotes howl at night. Cougars are not unheard of. It's pretty wild here! Walk our trails, and soon with plant identifiers and information stations. Find what Hood Canal has to offer!

You can also take a day trip to the San Juan Islands by taking a scenic ferry ride out of Anacortes. While you're here you may meet our pup Turner, or our cats Poly and Minnie, we also have several chickens that provide us with eggs most of the time. Also on the property are your hosts Jeri and Nancy, as well as our handyman Shawn who lives in a retro build bus at the north end. Saltgrass boasts beautiful flowers, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and yes, the Bay. We try to live harmoniously with the land. We would love to share our space with you! There's lots of gorgeous, mossy maples, shaggy cedars, and elk herds roaming free. The Cabin is easily accessible from the road, and has parking available. There's a secluded fire pit behind the cabin with a seasonal stream running by. Its a relaxing place to hang out for a few days, and/or excellent basecamp to explore the amazing forests, mountains, and beaches nearby. Also, there's lots of great foraging to be done (nettles, mushrooms, and oysters; oh my!) GPS LOCATION: When driving to the cabin, your GPS will tell you that 'your destination is on the left'. This is a lie. The cabin will be on the right. There is a metal gate that is closed with a chain but not locked. CABIN LAYOUT AND SLEEPING AMENITIES: The Cabin is just a little guy; only 16'x20'. There is a kitchen, living room, and dining room area, and the bathroom is a separate room - we call it our 'studio cabin'. We have a fold out couch for which we provide linens, pillows, and a comforter. There is also an inflatable mattress that is a tight squeeze, but can allow for four people to sleep (with a little furniture rearranging). There is a deck that is large enough for a two person tent that would also make a four person camp-out comfortable. All linens and towels are stored in the trunk and the bathroom cabinet. There is a 4' round dining room table with four chairs and a small table on the porch with two more chairs. All the cushions for the chairs are in a cabinet under the table inside. ACCESSIBILITY: Unfortunately, the cabin is not wheelchair accessible. There are 5 stairs up to the deck and the bathroom door is only 27" wide. SURROUNDING AREA: There are small trails leading away from the cabin; do not walk down them! They lead to neighboring properties and I cannot guarantee that there won't be neighbors who would be very surprised by a stranger showing up on their land! There are lots of public trails only a few minutes drive in either direction from the property :) STOLEN LAND: This property is on stolen, indigenous land. Purple Cottage Studio

The *Purple Cottage* -- was found & salvaged (recycled!)-- moved onto the back of my property in 2012. This 16 X 12' place has been my studio in the past, but has offered overflow for friends & family. Nestled in the woods and ever-so-private, the cottage has a pull-out double futon, plus a small sleeping loft and can accommodate 1 -2 nicely (we will consider 3 if you have a small child, but it would be a tight fit!... There is a very small sleeping loft in the cottage.). The cottage offers privacy in a wooded garden setting. The bathhouse, with hot shower, vanity & toilet --all steps away (and covered) from the main cabin. The Purple Cottage sits on a shy wooded acre, with greenbelt buffers all around, maximizing the sense of privacy. We have a vintage Shasta Trailer across the driveway of the Purple Cottage, which is currently used as a music studio (and rarely as family/guest overflow), and I have my own small Artist Studio located also on the back of the property. Still, with all the little enclave of buildings, the Purple Cottage Studio retains a private feel all to itself. It is located in a quiet little neighborhood, about 6 miles from Langley & 6 miles from Freeland.. Private beach access is across the road and a 15 minute walk up the street, where you can beach comb & explore the shoreline out at our little point. We are located 6 miles from the picturesque town of Langley and equal distance from Freeland, on the south end of Whidbey. Our area is very *bike-able* and either direction will get you to town! The Purple Cottage offers a rustic retreat in a place that feels far away, but is an hour & a half from the bustling city of Seattle! There is reliable wifi available (especially now that the cottage has it's own line!) at the cottage, as well as a CD player. Beach access is a short walk away.

Overview

On the northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, Port Townsend is a pretty, historic port town full of elegant 19th-century homes and lots of little shops and restaurants. While the charming, historic ambiance is the city’s biggest draw, it’s an equally great base for those who want to get out in nature. There are two Washington State Parks within city limits: the sprawling Fort Worden Historical State Park and the low-key Fort Townsend Historical State Park. Both of these former US Army properties offer RV and tent camping plus easy access to local beaches.

Olympic National Park

Encompassing nearly a million acres, this huge park is characterized by its diverse ecosystems, with beaches, old-growth forests, hot springs, and a glaciated mountain all within its boundaries. It's also home to the Hoh Rainforest, which protects trees up to a thousand years old, as well as tons of campgrounds and even its own thermal spring: Sol Duc Hot Springs.

Whidbey Island

A popular weekend getaway spot for Seattle residents, Whidbey Island is known for its excellent arts scene and its numerous state parks. The island is also the location of the massive Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, the first historical reserve in the nation, which encompasses beaches, woodlands, historic buildings, and two state parks.

Fort Flagler Historical State Park

Just shy of 1,500 acres, this former fort is a great place to learn about military history. Docents provide guided tours of the fort during the summer and there's a military museum for those who want to learn about the fort's history. Camping is also available, and the park offers a balanced mix of standard campsites and full hookup sites.

When to go

Rainfall in Port Townsend is to be expected throughout the year (this is the Pacific Northwest after all), but summer is usually warm and dry. If you don't mind chillier weather, the holiday season is another excellent time for paying a visit, not only to see the beautiful lights that illuminate many of Port Townsend’s historic buildings, but also to see Santa steamroll through town on his very own "Kiwanis Choo Choo" train.
