Campfire Tale: The Legend of John Tornow "The Wildman of the Wynooche." More than a century ago, the forests around Travers Mountain were home to one of Washington’s most mysterious figures — John Tornow, the Wildman of the Wynooche. Born in 1880, Tornow grew up as a gifted woodsman and hunter. He was known for his uncanny ability to move silently through the timber, living off the land with the skill of someone more animal than man. But his story turned dark after the tragic deaths of his nephews, the Bauer twins, whose family homestead you can still see from our property. Accused of their killings, Tornow fled deep into the wilderness. For nearly two years, he evaded every search party and posse that hunted him. Locals whispered that he was impossible to track — some even swore he could vanish into the trees like a ghost. He became both feared and respected, remembered as part outlaw, part legend. The tale ends in 1913, when a massive manhunt cornered Tornow in the woods. Even then, he fought fiercely, leaving his mark on Grays Harbor history forever. So when you camp here whether its under the trees-at Tornow’s Timberline, perched high at Outlaw’s Overlook, or gathered by the fire at Wildman’s Saloon Stop — listen closely to the night sounds. Dogs are able to be leash free and enjoy the space as well. Only a ten min private walk to the ocean through the dunes to enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, kite flying, picnics on the beach, day camping, amazing sunsets and so much more. Rubber boots (maybe some waders, depending on the winter) are recommended for the hike to the beach during the winter months (November-May) as you will have a small trek through seasonal wet lands. You may also access the beach/ocean by vehicle just a few minutes away in town. You will be located between the Quinault Casino and the City of Ocean Shores where you can enjoy all the wonderful activities there is to offer. If kayaking, canoeing or paddle boarding is what you are seeking, many are unaware of the 23 miles of scenic canals in the City of Ocean Shores. You may also fish for bass, rainbow trout, yellow perch and bluegill sunfish in these waterways. I hear there are a couple little Islands to explore as well. What a hidden treasure! There are three launch sites available we can give if needed. And if you left something at home, sitting there thinking he was going to grab it (haha) no worries, you more than likely can grab it in town. The Ace hardware is amazing! There is an Arcade, golf, miniature golf, go carts, water go carts, bowling, horseback rentals (seasonal) for the beach, electric bike rentals, scooter rentals and so many more activities for you to enjoy. A wonderful place where memories are made.

Please be mindful of other campers as this is an open field nestled under old growth Maple Trees. Quiet Hours and respectful camping etiquette should be followed. We have a communal fire pit in the middle of the 3 acre parcel, 7 sites in total and a clean and new Porta-Potty toilet. There is no water on site so please bring your own water. You may also bring your own portable propane fire pit should you wish not to use the communal fire pit. We hope this description helps! Site 1 is best suited for a camper van. Site 5 and 6 are in the very back of the property and might be best if you are camping with another family. Site 7 is closest to the fire pit. One tent per space please. We also have a brand new cabin 1/2 mile up the Valley from our Merriman Creek Hipcamp that also can be rented through the Hipcamp Platform.

Sites are …… as you drive in first to right in number 1, 2, 3 . 4 is last one to right after cell tower driveway it is now open as an open play area. ( Left hand side is another Hipcamp host they are marked A, B, C, D ) Porta Potty is for my campers it has a combo lock This combo will come to you as automatic message 24hrs prior to arrival time. The lock combo is for top line of lock not the middle. All sites have a picnic table Site 1 and 3 have fire pits. Site 1,3 have campground style BBQ New as of June, 2023 porta potty added. DO NOT put garbage or transfer any waste to porta potty. Jacks Country store in Ocean Park, WA has garbage drop off for small fee depending on size. On site, enjoy swimming, bird watching, eagles & sunbathing with total peace & relaxation. There are many hiking trails nearby. You can hike through our beautiful forests or take a stroll along our gorgeous beaches. There are many beaches within a short driving distance from our location, and you can take your pick of sandy shores or a little rockier shore. We also have 'Native to Twilight' for all our Twilight fans, the Sasquatch and many more little shops, and restaurants. Forks is a very unique town with a population just under four thousand. This was our first time using Hipcamp and we had placed Shangri LaPush on our favorites list a while ago and decided it was finally time to go! This place did not disappoint! Dale was a wonderful host and very welcoming! The bathroom was clean and warm in the chilly weather, and our camp site was clean and spacious for our setup. We loved that it was dog friendly (we travel with our fur pups) and equipped with a doggy poop trash can. We used the water from the well spigot a lot and even the kids had no problem getting the water for our camp. We saw some beautiful stars in the night sky and enjoyed the view of all the gorgeous trees. We did hear some road noise but it wasn't bad and it honestly did not take away from our experience whatsoever. Very good location close to Forks, the beaches, and some quick convenience stores. The whole family agreed we will be coming back to make more great memories here!

We had a small mix-up when we first arrived—our site had been double-booked—but the host handled it incredibly well. He went above and beyond to make sure everything was sorted quickly and that we were comfortable. I was super impressed with how professional and kind he was throughout the whole process. Once settled, the rest of the stay was pure magic. There’s a sense of peace that seems to permeate from this place—the kind you can feel deep down. The views of the Olympic coast are absolutely breathtaking, and you can tell the grounds are cared for with genuine pride and attention to detail. Everything was spotless and thoughtfully set up, with tons of extra amenities on hand—propane, pots, pans, and more—making the stay feel effortless.
