It's about a mile in two directions from the Pacific Ocean beach, and is surrounded by wooded acreage that is criss-crossed with trails and friendly neighbors, on an island with about 700 year-round residents and an active weekend/summer population. Homestead owner Ian Woofenden is an expert in renewable energy systems. He's lived off-grid at the homestead for 40-plus years, where he raised his large family and managed several small businesses. He now consults, sells, writes, and teaches about renewable energy in the U.S. and in Central America. If your idea of a great getaway is to help out and do physical work, just ask Ian. There's always something going on at the homestead, including garden and orchard work, trail building, wood cutting, construction, sawmilling, and more. Ian built this place, and has a broad knowledge of lots of homestead and sustainability topics. He loves sharing his knowledge and experience with guest, students, and interns. Weekend Trip to Rusty Ranch Tree Farm and Forest

The cabin was neat and tidy and fit 3 adults and 2 small dogs comfortably. The trails were beautiful and the creeks even more so. Margaret had extra food and supplies we needed available for purchase at reasonable prices and the privy was extremely clean! We didn’t end up paying to pet the pony but even just seeing em there was nice! Our site was far enough from other sites that we didn’t have any noise issues or feel any lack of privacy. They also went above and beyond and provided beautiful vases of Dahlias in the cabin and outhouse. Overall it was a wonderful stay :)

We absolutely loved the little cabin and surrounding property. Trails were maintained and easy to find. Hikes are manageable for 10lb pup, too. Great for a weekend trip!

Weekend Trip to Grace E.’s Mini Forest Cabins

We enjoyed glamping in cabin 3, the host Grace is very pleasant and helpful. We chose this place because we were able to bring our dogs. The cabins are nicely spaced out so you have a sense of some privacy and the barbeque under the covered deck came in handy. Only thing that would of made it better is if we weren't so scared of spiders and you were allowed visitors to stop in if you wanted.

My dog and I stayed in the cabin, it was a wonderful night! The directions from Dave were very clear, had no problem finding it. I felt very safe here, as there are 2 gates to go through, had the best sleep in a long time! It's a very big, beautiful property with so many hiking trails to explore, We loved it! The cabin was perfect, nice to have running water!

This cabin was so amazing! We rented it for my husband's birthday and it did not disappoint! It was clean, the grounds are secluded and it's so quiet. The hosts do a great job of making things easy to figure out. All the directions and instructions are very easy to follow.

I stayed in the bunkhouse for a couple days while visiting WA for a buddy’s wedding. It was such a gorgeous and peaceful stay. The trails on property are very well kept and boast some beautiful scenery. Awesome stay, would definitely recommend!

Weekend Trip to Primitive ForRest Cabin

When we arrived there was no one else at this camp. We found our cabin, and it just felt magical: comfortable and cozy, with everything we might need, even a big power bank and filled water dispenser. It hardly felt primitive at all. It was as if a fairy had anticipated our arrival and made this sweet little world for us. There’s a nice, clean outhouse just a few steps from the cabin, and a communal kitchen with a propane stove and some basic cooking/eating utensils. Both a pleasure to use. And a really nice outdoor shower with hot water! We took part in the community sauna the next night — also magical, with two saunas (at different temps) and two cold plunges to choose from. Lusa was such a kind and generous host. I plan to go back again!

Wow! Wow! Wow! We stayed in the Hytte, and it was truly incredible. It is so quiet and beautiful back there, and you truly feel like you have your own campground. The Hytte is picturesque and comfortable. Having a running sink, your own toilet, and a hot outdoor shower, all just really seals the deal. Dave was very responsive when I had questions, and sent us very clear and timely info for the trip. We live a long ways away, but are already scheming how to get back out to Valhalla again.

The entire property is very well maintained. We stayed in the Bunkhouse which is a dry cabin (there is a pump nearby for non-potable water and a very clean and odor-free compost toilet in an outhouse building right at the bunkhouse). The futon sofa converts into a very comfortable bed and there is a table built in to the bottom of a bunk bed. There are no electrical outlets but there are interior lights. We were there during dahlia season and Margaret had a beautiful vase of flowers in the bunkhouse and in the privy. There are thoughtful touches throughout the property. We love the hiking trails in the forest and they are all marked and she provides a map so you cannot get lost! We really enjoyed getting away with our dog and being in the countryside.

Weekend Trip to Coyote Meadow Basecamp

Very convenient to all the hiking/viewing. Secluded and quiet. Other campers were quiet. Shed was clean, spacious with chairs and lamps. Water spigot was close. The outhouse is a portapotty, very small. In our case it really needed to be serviced.

Location is a great Basecamp for hiking or stay on property and explore/ relax. A-frame was comfortable for 3 adult sized people. We pulled one foam pad down to the bottom floor for semi privacy. Bathroom is a tight fit for tall people but nice to hang a clean indoor option.

Two cots in each a frame, bring your sleeping bag and comfy bedding if you’re a side sleeper. there was a simple sink behind the right cabin which is helpful to wash up. Lodged for a night after the bioluminescence kayak tour at port gamble. Could hear coyotes at night and chickens in the morning.

Weekend Trip to Wild Hearts on Whidbey

The friendly farm friends (ducks, chickens & horses) were a nice treat. The details of the space weren't clear as advertised, which required some adjusting for our stay: The floors and provided blankets were covered in dog hair when we arrived, the tubs under the sink meant to catch water leaked all over the floor, the 2nd bed was stored up above the built-in room (unreachable) and there were no instructions on how to turn off the (albeit very cute) overhead lights. The host was very accommodating to our 3 cars and responsive to concerns. The decor was cute, and the space was easy to find.

Weekend Trip to Fruit of the Earth Farm

This was our third visit to the little cabins at Fruit of the Earth, and we always have a wonderful time. The property is beautiful and Leia is a great host. I was so glad we opted for the dozen farm fresh eggs with our booking this time, and in the past we’ve loved getting to meet and feed the animals. Can’t wait to come back!
