This was a 55-acre farm, split in half to accommodate a bypass through Charlottesville, so the previous owners had to give up half the land, and actually moved the house down to the other half of the property! They had to build a land bridge to get to the new home site, so they turned the bridge into a dam and created a beautiful large swimming pond, complete with beach and gazebo. My wife Stephanie and I bought the property in early 2017 and have turned it into a private horse farm, adding pastures, a riding ring, and 6-stall barn. Starting December 1, or first night below freezing we will be closing down Bath House and only access will be at outhouses. Only sites near outhouses will be open and there will be no access to water. Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays.

The airstrip still maintained as such in order to offer aviation-accessible camping. It is s the future home of Faber Christmas tree farm and features several notable antique vehicles rusting in peace. Some models are of the same make and model featured on TV and film. Camp Cove Creek is easily accessible via Rt 29 and Rt 6 east (Irish Road). Our property sits at the confluence of Bear and Cove Creeks where wading/hiking/tubing is permitted and encouraged (with water shoes). We are continually trying to improve the site by removing old barbed wire, poison ivy, roadside trash, and invasive plant species in addition to planting Christmas Trees, raising 3 kids, and working 2 full time jobs so please forgive our works in progress! This is your 30-acre camping playground! Licensed off-road vehicles, ADV and Dual-sport motorcycles, horses, personal electric vehicles and EVEN PRIVATE PLANES are welcomed! Camp anywhere along it or the creeks bordering it. We encourage walking the route first as it has intentionally been left primitive to provide more of an authentic and fun getaway adventure. Overlanding does tend to scratch paint so enter at your own risk! There is a Volleyball Net and Horseshoe set for use as well. Nearby in the soapstone mining town of Schuyler you can visit the home place of Earl Hamner, best known for his creation of The Waltons TV show. While you're there check out the Waltons Mountain Museum, which happens to be my old elementary school and my parent's former high school. The Rockfish River dam and quarry gardens are really cool too!

Private, quiet stream-front site. Our lab loved frolicking in the stream. Site was level and well-sized for my truck and camping trailer. In the summer, it would get a lot of sun over the southern ridge opposite the river, so solar collection would work. In November, sun was in short supply, and the sun angle was pretty low, so we just barely eked by. We bring our own bathroom facilities(Cleanwaste GO), but other campers who don’t want to be digging cat holes should be aware that there are no bathroom facilities if they are staying on site for a long time. Convenient to Old Rag for day hikers, and Montpelier for history buffs. No trouble with raccoons etc, but we kept our food secured just in case. Nice steel fire pit, which made cooking over the fire a breeze.

Ryant has set up a really nice place to camp! It is quiet and beautiful. And the wide open sky, with virtually no light pollution provides an amazing view of the stars!! The first night we were there, it was crystal clear and we could see stars that we had never seen before. The second night, there was a bit of haze and it made a really awesome halo around the Moon! If you're into history, he has done research, and continues to do so, and has great stories about the history of the property and what he is in the process of uncovering. I would highly recommend that you check it out. He's a great guy and can relate to your needs, as he loves to camp as well. I was very impressed by the investment he has made in equipment to help out campers who might not be as prepared as they should be. It's only going to get better, as he has big plans for improving, even beyond the excellent property that it already is. You won't be disappointed. Rightly so, he expects respect of the property and other campers, but isn't that the type of place you want to go? It is definitely one of the things that are high on my list. We'll definitely be back!

An absolutely beautiful property! I camped for four days with full hookups. I arrived just after dark and I was escorted to my site and guided in. The camping area on their property is forest with with perfect gravel roads and campsites. There was a picnic table and fire pit available and the site was level with plenty of room on both sides. I was in the area to see family for Thanksgiving at Lake Monticello. The campsite is only twenty minutes away which was perfect. Everything was five stars and I plan to stay there again next time I am in town. I loved this place and highly recommend it over other nearby campsites.

Campsite was accurate described. Host was gracious and communicated quickly. Location was centrally located to lots of areas. Luray to the north, Elkton just around the corner, and Waynesboro to the south. Campsite was nice. Even with houses closer by, it was quiet and felt secluded. Except for maybe some nearby roosters to wake you up. Their horses loved to say hello especially once they learned you have apples for them. Would definitely stay here again.

I have nothing but wondeful things to say about this campground. It was clean, beautiful, accomodating and friendly. There was plenty of turn around space to maneuver our camper. The dumping station was well kept and easy to pull up to. The creek was beautiful along the back of the campground and we had wonderful conversations with the host and he was very inviting. There is a train that runs on the other side of the creek which we found to be exciting to watch and it was quiet so it did not wake us up. There is an enclosed dog walking area which was nice for our dogs. We will definitley be back.

We loved tent camping at Swedish Lilac. The babbling river, the sounds of the trains (not too loud and we loved it), and Fritz, the host, made our time memorable. The bathrooms were very clean and convenient. We will definitely be back!!

Gate removed, signs changed, but I keep this as a reminder of the day we decided to retire back here. "REDUCED SPEED AHEAD" was the sign we needed!

The good: Friendly, helpful staff, pleasant out-of-the-way valley with a small river running along the edge of the campground. Convenient to Lexington and Fairfield and Buena Vista. Bathrooms are clean. Free firewood was offered during our stay. The not as good: No on site waste hookup, and the dump station is on the wrong side of the driveway. There is a train track just on the other side of the river that has freight trains at 2am, 4am, and 10am (at least during our stay). Some sites are awkwardly arranged. Bathrooms are not heated. Overall: Don't let the negatives discourage you from staying here, I mentioned them only so you will not be surprised. It is a peaceful campground despite the occasional freight train. Well away from major roads and light pollution, with a very friendly staff who make sure you get there by the best route and guide you to your site. Stayed during winter, two nights were below freezing, so occupancy was very low. I believe they have activities during the summer months.
