We are just over an hour north of Durham, NC, two hours southwest of Richmond, VA, and 30 minutes east of Danville, VA. Our property is 204 acres of beautiful wilderness, in an international Dark Sky zone (you can see the milky way on a clear night), where you can usually hear nothing other than the calls of the animals. The property is accessed via a half mile dirt and grass road that drops you off at the main camping area at the Old Tobacco Barn. From there you have access to a composting toilet and fire circle. Roughly half the property was cleared and is open and overgrown with brush. The other half of the property is various types and stages of forest, from young to old. We have 5 waterways that I have counted so far (it's a lot of land!), including 1.5 miles of Sandy Creek, which is more of a small river than a creek, beautiful swimmable natural springs, and a half acre pond (with beavers!). We have two kayaks that you can use on the pond, and you can bring tubes or kayaks and paddle down Sandy Creek all the way to Banister River a few miles downstream. Camping is available throughout the property, although you will see several marked and prepped sites along the road or in the woods. This is rustic camping, meaning that you can drive up to some camping sites, but others are off the road and require a bit of trekking through brush, trails, or woods. This area of the state is an international dark sky zone, and the views at night are glorious - the milky way is clearly visible, you can generally catch shooting stars with regularity on any clear night, and if you bring binoculars or a telescope, you have a clear view of most of the sky. If you enjoy wild plants, foraging, bird watching, tracking, or generally getting out into a natural space, then you will enjoy the diversity of the wildlife and plant life on the property. Animals that we have verified on the land include Deer (lots!), Racoons, Cayote, Turkey, Black Bear, Fox, and a large variety of birds and other critters that we haven't identified. We have house sized boulders along Sandy Creek that you can climb on, and the creek itself is clean and swimmable. There is lots to explore throughout the property and, most of all, it's a wonderful place to rest and relax out in nature. A few things to keep in mind: * The road is a dirt road, meaning that it turns muddy after it rains. Please be mindful of this and park at the front and walk in if it is raining or has rained the day before you arrive. Also, if it looks like it will rain while you are on site, you may want to move your vehicle to the front of the property to make it easier to get out when you leave. Having said that, the road is good and any car can drive it without issue when it is dry. * Smaller campers and trailers are welcome on the property as well, although we do not have a place to dump/empty your septic, so please take waste off site. * We do not have showers or potable water on site, so you will need to pack water in with you. This is rustic camping. * We do have a composting toilet - please drop a handful of wood shavings into the bucket when you are done. This is a rustic little spot about 15 minutes off Rt. 460 in central VA. No amenities, so bring everything you will need, but Merritt was responsive and quite hospitable. The land is privately located among a small hardwood tree grove, but has nice pond views to one side and fields on 2 other sides. Merritt and his wife are lovely people and fascinating to talk to.

Easy to find, great access for my van, total solitude. Many acres to explore on foot, a nice river, even an outdoor kitchen. A clean composting head on site. Peter met me at the entrance, took plenty of time to show me around before leaving me to pick my own spot for the night - lots to choose from, all really excellent. Full cell coverage (I have Spectrum). Thanks, Peter - I'll definitely be back.

It was quite cold at night but we were given a space heater and the mattress had heating pads on both sides of the bed. The common areas had large space heaters and the showers gave us super nice hot water. It was so very cozy. We enjoyed fishing on their pond. The bathroom was so close to the lodge, we really didn’t need the golf cart they gave us, but it was fun to have anyways. They had huge jackery batteries that they made sure were full daily. This was genuinely a glamping experience. I loved it because we still definitely felt like we were “camping” just with high end amenities. We envisioned the entire space would be so perfect for any kind of weekend event just with all the different facilities within the sight. We stayed with our pups and they loved seeing the cows in the morning!! First time we took them camping and they did so great. We had a great stay :)

Weekend Trip to Camping at Cloverdale Farms

What a charming and peaceful property! They have the sweetest animals and a beautiful garden. It was nice to have a restroom and shower nearby. Great spacious camp site. We really appreciated the canopy that was set up for us because the sun was hot during the day, and there was plenty of firewood available to keep us warm at night. Karen made us feel so welcome and made sure we had everything we needed, including jumper cables when one of our cars wouldn’t start. AMAZING spot for stargazing!

Weekend Trip to Smith Farm

Kerwin and his family saved my son's 16th birthday celebration. We made a reservation for tent style accommodations for the evening but when we arrived, it was FAR from what was advertised. We had to scramble to find somewhere else and Kerwin responded immediately to my almost 8pm request to book and answered his phone when I panic called. (This was literally 10 minutes after I requested to book, and he said he was right in the middle.of texting me back. The RELIEF I felt in that moment is indescribable) Kerwin and family are the sweetest and I cannot explain how grateful I am for their hospitality. The home was immaculate when we arrived and waking up to a field of cows and 2 of the cutest donkeys ive ever seen was amazing. The property, the people, the vibe, the atmosphere- its all perfect! Unfortunately we had to leave before we could meet Kerwin or his other farm animal family members in person,but we will absolutely be back! Maybe even to get married at their stunning wedding venue!!!! 100% perfect. Book it, youll regret it if you dont!

The Lodge was fantastic. Rustic but comfortable. It was nestled in the woods and close to everything. The property is beautiful. There are plenty of views and things to do. The hosts have thought if everything. Battery packs provide power for phones, fans, etc. A filled ice chest was provided for us upon arrival. Complimentary water, coffee, and tea. A large area for parties, a charcoal grill (In a steer sculpture, lol), small gas grill, and a pizza oven! Outdoor games, basketball, horseshoe pits, cornhole... They even have bamboo fishing poles for the pond!

Amazing! My daughter and I had SUCH a fun, relaxing experience! The property has lots to do, is beautiful, cabins are awesome and clean, and we felt safe! We particularly enjoyed the pickleball court:) Decorations/decor are so well done- lots of thought and care have gone into this place. We have already recommended to friends and will definitely return!

The campsites were fantastic. Water pressure was wonderful. 30 and 50 amp hook ups beautiful bathhouse. Trails to explore for Miles. Wonderful access to a nice shallow spot on the James River. Great for swimming, putting in your kayak or tube. You will also notice the remnants of a larger infrastructure that was once a private school campus. Weekend Trip to Creekside Cool Bus

it was a pleasure to camp at the creekside cool bus! the whole experience came with ease, starting with great communication from chloe, the skoolie provided everything we needed (& more) for a cozy retreat into nature. there was plenty to explore, a gnome lined walking trail along the creek and a short drive to the state park. the campsite is isolated enough to have your own privacy but close enough to access the full bathroom. it really was the perfect place for reconnection with each other and nature.

Views are beautiful and the property is furnished and maintained very well . You will enjoy your stay . Transparent rooftops- to see the sky/ hear the rain. Huge windows exposing the beautiful trees around you Neatly setup seating areas and fireplace Amazing community kitchen that has a shared grill, pizzaoven and kitchenette . They also sell goatmilk soap and eggs from their farm .Itching to go back ! It was amazing and so close to the city , very convenient- given walmart is abt 15min away . Kerr lake is 10min away and has great views as well.

This is a unique place to stay with lots to do all around it. The bus was well equipped with everything you need to enjoy a peaceful quiet vacation or long weekend. Hosts were excellent and very friendly! The property and creek were fun to explore. I highly recommend this location and will definitely be returning.
