Weekend Trip to Sunrise by the Pond

Beautiful spot! I loved being able to walk to the tasting barn and the dog park is a nice touch.

We had a terrific time camping on Kevin's farm. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy a quiet weekend surrounded by nature. Despite visiting in the heat of summer, there was plenty of shade at both the gathering area by the pond and at the tent, which was very cool and comfortable. Kevin and his family are terrific hosts, and we enjoyed the chance to walk their working farm and see a variety of animals. Our hosts thought of everything and were super accessible. And you definitely won't run out of firewood! We definitely look forward to returning.

Other’s reviews of the stay are spot on! Spacious tent, we added an additional queen size raised camp bed with ease. Shower is hot and close to site and port-a-john clean and closer to the site. There’s a gas station with a convenience market less than a mile from the site for last minute supplies. We took the kayaks out for an afternoon trip around the pond and got to visit a few farm animals. There are trails to hike right from the camp site. Malinda and Kevin were responsive to our request and really enjoyed getting to meet them. Hope to stay here again in the future!

I took a 3 night solo trip for some mental time. Two nights were spent at Site 1. This place was an absolute hidden paradise. You’ve got your own little lazy river a few steps from the fire pit. Graham and his kids were awesome. The kids helped load me up with firewood on the first night. Could not recommend this place enough. Fantastic getaway.

1 night at Camping at Wilderness Run

This was one of the nicest camping experiences I've had. The campsite is located at a brewery, so when I checked in I was able to buy some nice cold beer. Even the ground was nice and soft in the spot I picked out. I was feeling pretty burnt out at the end of a long day on the road, so I didn't go socialize - but the campsite is walking distance from the brewery if that interests you. Despite the proximity, I never actually saw another person during my stay aside from when I checked in, making it feel nice and private.

What a cool place to camp! The host has created a secluded camping area on the grounds of a winery. The campsite has electricity, a nice picnic table, and a massive fire ring with cooking grate. The space is grass covered and has lots of trees but is also open for those who have a Starlink. Would love to come back here on a weekend and check out the winery.

1 night at Cross Creek Farm

Rodney's place was perfect for us to spend the night. It was easy to find and Rodney was most hospitable: extraordinarily so since just the day before, a flash flood destroyed some of his animal containment fencing, so he was very busy with the needed repairs. Our camp spot was not affected as it was on higher ground that was sand/gravel/grass, so it still worked well for our van camper. He even provided us with a dozen farm fresh eggs (for only $5) from his own chickens. Thank you Rodney.

What a great spot to camp. Very secluded and easy to get to. The owner was awesome. Our weekend rained most of the time and he brought us dry wood whenever we needed it. My family found a new spot to just get away from the norm. I recommend this spot for a great getaway …thank you Graham!

Located in rustic Bells Crossroads, VA three miles from I-64, Billyville is a work in progress featuring 2 tent and 4 RV sites with electric hookup and lots of space. Wifi, well water from a hose and composting outhouse facilities are available. Other amenities include a six hole disc golf course, little free library. Within one hour’s ride is a wealth of things to do, experience and see; within reach are the Shenandoah mountains, the University of Virginia and Charlottesville and Lake Anna . There is something for everyone from children to seniors, from outdoor adventurers, to history buffs, arts and entertainment seekers, bargain shoppers and local gourmet food and drink lovers. At days end you can go to concerts or “clubbing” in town or return to Billyville and enjoy the quiet, peaceful ambiance of a campfire under a starlit sky. Check-Ins and Arrival Instructions: Check-ins on weekdays are dependent on my work schedule. If this is your first time at Billyville, I need to be on property to guide you into your site. Please reach out before your stay so we can coordinate. If I am off on that day, check-in is after 1pm. If I am working, it will be after 5pm and occasionally after 7. I am currently testing out some procedures to allow self check-in. We'll see how that pans out. Anyway, to get to Billyville: Turn onto Bells Lane. (Dirt Road). Birdwatching, nature photography, and simply observing the local fauna are all favorite pastimes here. Otherwise you will drag. During summer droughts, the river will be shallow near the camp sites.

Wolftrap Farm

Wolftrap Farm was owned by James & Dolley Madison during their time, and they called it Black Meadow. Their home, Montpelier, is just across the mountains you see from the campsite. It passed through the hands of various local farmers during the 19th & 20th centuries, and for many years was a dairy farm. It became primarily a horse farm in the 1970's, when it was owned by the German Von Wulffen family.The Cuthrell family from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area acquired the farm in 2003 and converted it to a resort farm, featuring upscale vacation homes. Beginning around 2013, the farm started morphing into primarily a wedding venue, and now hosts over 60 weddings each year.

Ginkgo Ridge

With views over the ocean of trees and town below, we offer three private and very comfy Glamping Cabins. Each of them provides a terrific place to experience the outdoors in comfort. We make it easy and fun to experience nature. Here, you can enjoy the breathtaking vistas, watch the spectacular sunsets, chase fireflies, make a campfire, search for the Milky Way, and then sleep easy in your own queen-sized bed on this historic property. The two original, off-grid, Jefferson Sea Cabins are perched on the eastern side of Ginkgo Ridge, And the newest, the Boxwood Overlook, sits on top of the ridge and includes electricity, AC, heat and lights. Ginkgo Ridge sits on the eastern side of the Southwest Mountains, which is the first mountain range west of the Atlantic. The views are big and far. Some say you can even see Portugal! Wildlife, including eagles, hawks, turkey, fox, rabbit, deer, fireflies and more are abundant on the 66-acre property. If you are interested in history, ask John. He will tell you about the Civil War battle fought here and the tobacco baron who once owned the estate. Two of our cabins are off grid — no electric and no plumbing but with alternative water and light. The third and newest enjoys electric. While there is no "running" water, we bring you fresh spring water. And while there is no electric in 2 cabins we make up for it with solar and battery lights and fans. We also offer a propane heater in all 3 to keep you toasty in cooler weather. Both off-grid cabins are equipped with a comfy, luxury queen-sized bed and box spring with fresh linens and plenty of pillows, a chair, and tables. The cabins are approximately 12x14 of interior living space plus a semi covered 16’ x 8’ deck with chairs and table. The original cabin is slightly smaller interior than the lower cabin. The newest third cabin is called the Boxwood Overlook Cabin, because it is surrounded by huge boxwoods and overlooks the entire property. It sits where the original main house was located, but burned down in the 1920's. It is more luxurious that the other 2. It's 12x20, includes an organic queen bed, refrigerator, reclining chairs, interior and exterior lights. And you can drive right to the front door. Each cabin gets a propane heater which keeps you toasty even on the coldest winter nights. In warmer months, the 2 off-grid cabins have battery-powered fans with plenty of industrial batteries. They also enjoys plenty of solar powered torch lamps which offer a terrific ambiance. We do recommend you bring flashlights and or headlamps. If you forget, no worries, we got you covered. The Boxwood Overlook cabin has electricity with interior and exterior lights, refrigerator and AC in the summer. All the cabins enjoy 5-gallon containers of fresh spring water and their own private Loo House/bathroom. The Loo Houses or bathrooms are semi open air. They have roofs, a solar bag shower, and bedside commodes with large, disposable, biodegradable bag inside with special sand that solidifies your waste. You dispose of the bag at a nearby trash box off property, just like a diaper. Extra bags are available. Each cabin has its own fire pit and grill with everything you need to make a fire, including split wood, kindling, newspaper and lighter. Firewood is $7.50 per crate. And if you need help starting your fire, no worries, John will help you. The "Jefferson Sea" is a description many attribute to the nation's 4th President, Thomas Jefferson, who enjoyed the same ocean-like view (but better) of fields and trees below his home at Monticello, that is located 15 miles down the road. Enjoy giant Ginkgo trees (especially in the Fall), boxwood gardens, colossal Tulip Poplars, and Osage Orange trees, and wild organic raspberries in July. We support BIPOC and all are welcome to enjoy our property :) There is a 2-night minimum on weekends. Just down the hill is the historic town of Gordonsville with perhaps the best BBQ on the east coast, wine tasting room, two breweries, several cafes and restaurants, grocery store and liquor store. Within minutes are Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Madison’s Montpelier and some of the nation’s finest vineyards, including Barboursville Vineyard and many others. The Blue Ridge Mountains, Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, the University of Virginia and downtown Charlottesville are within 30 minutes. It’s just an hour to Richmond or Harrisonburg and less than two to Washington, DC, or 3 to We are very COVID-conscious! Labyrinth, Trails and Solitude

116 acres of hills and dells. Miles of hiking trails marked and well maintained. A small pond and beautiful labyrinth. Over 50 acres of deep wilderness woods. General Lee and his troops once camped here. But they cleaned up pretty good, so all you can really see is the old spring and wagon road. This is a working herb and small fruit farm. We have been experimenting with all kinds of exotic herbs and trees. Some make it, many don't. We sell dried herb teas. In addition we have 5 different kinds of bamboo. We use the bamboo for so many things. In the 5 people per site we are considering adults, not children... bring a whole crew of kids (try to have enough supervision - if there is such a concept!) The kids have such a great time out here... it is amazing. They love the labyrinth! It seems like we made this place for the kids in ourselves and when actual kids see it they go wild. The last bunch were running and yelping with their picked flowers all round and round in the labyrinth for hours! Also, if you want peace and quiet - and we have children booked - we will put you out at one beautiful remote campsites away from all the kids running and singing.
