The Button Farm Living History Center is a hands-on education facility dedicated to preserving the history of the Underground Railroad.
It is operated by the Menare Foundation through a long term lease agreement with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
Several of us who work for the non-profit live in the Button Farm house and share the land with our pigs, geese, chickens and lots of wildlife.

All hail William Smallwood. Not only did he serve in the Revolutionary War, but he left behind the ideal escape from beltway chaos. Just 40 minutes outside DC, Smallwood State Park is a 628 acre paradise with a marina, boat launching ramps, a picnic area, camping area, pavilions, a recycled tire playground and nature trails. The park is on the Mattawoman Creek, less than a mile from the Potomac River, but if you’re ready to swim, errrr, boat/fish with the big fish, the Potomac River is just a mile away. About the property
Located on a 66-acre plot just five miles from the Shenandoah River, our property offers amazing access to hiking and the outdoors while also keeping civilization within striking distance. Bear Chase Brewery is just a half mile walk across the street, and we are 15 miles from Purcellville.
The land and lodge used to be the summer home of a trained opera singer, whose singing could be heard throughout the mountain.
Your Host lives onsite in the stone house that also acts as a hostel for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Built in the 1930's all from locally sourced hand-hammered stone, the house is open every night from 5pm - 9pm.
Note that we offer several campsites relatively close to each other, so you should expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay.
About the listing
Pitch your tent in a forested area just a short walk up from where you’ll park your car. Enjoy unbeatable proximity to hiking and panoramic views while still having basic amenities that ensure a comfortable stay.
You’ll have access to a composting pit toilet, and can access potable water from the tap in the lodge. That’s also where you can access hot showers. As noted above, we host Appalachian Trail thru hikers on the property, so you may see them hanging around or sleeping in the bunkhouse near the shared facilities. so please be respectful of hours when you come in for a shower.

For meals, we have picnic tables, and you are encouraged to cook over the fire pits that accompany each site. Please practice Leave No Trace practices during your stay, as the property has raccoons and other critters who will be drawn to any food scraps that are left behind.

Every year in the spring there are 4-6 Thoroughbred foals born that eventually will become racehorses. They live on the farm until they are 2 years old and then they go off to begin their racing career.

If you’re down for a little history (and maybe a little mystery) Cedarville State Forest will definitely dazzle. The 3,510 acre forest was once the winter camping ground of the Piscataway Tribe because of the mild climate and abundance of game. Legend claims that there is a Native American burial ground within the forest... but it has yet to be found. Spooky! Equestrian, family and youth group campsites are available for your overnight stay. 19.5 miles of horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking trails weave through the forest. From the flat land at the bottom to the top of the mountain, this is a place where you can find a spot to sit and think, draw, paint, nap, or identify over 30 medicinal plants in their natural habitats (absolutely NO harvesting of medicinals or wildflowers!). Listen to the many birds, spot the wildflowers.
Some areas are accessible by wheelchair, while others are not, but all areas offer something to sustain your spirit.
If you feel the need to explore the area, you are within walking distance of NotaViva Farm Brewery and Winery, 15 dirt road minutes from the new Sweet Run State Park one direction and Breaux Vineyard in the other direction. From the flat land at the bottom to the top of the mountain, this is a place where you can find a spot to sit and think, draw, paint, nap, or identify over 30 medicinal plants in their natural habitats (absolutely NO harvesting of medicinals or wildflowers!). Listen to the many birds, spot the wildflowers.
Some areas are accessible by wheelchair, while others are not, but all areas offer something to sustain your spirit.
If you feel the need to explore the area, you are within walking distance of NotaViva Farm Brewery and Winery, 15 dirt road minutes from the new Sweet Run State Park one direction and Breaux Vineyard in the other direction. The Appalachian Trail is just over the top of the mountain and Harpers Ferry National Park is down the road and over the Shenandoah River.
We might be a teeny bit biased, but we think this is area of northwest Loudoun County, VA is one of the loveliest places in the world.

Just 1.6 miles from an Appalachian trail access point, our site is a beautiful slice of Blue Ridge mountain life. We have a small hobby farm with chickens, peacocks, and livestock guardian dogs (who bark at night). The rest of the property is wooded, with a 1/2 acre clearing great for tents and campers. PLEASE NOTE: at least one camper must be 21+. Until May 1, fires only from to 4pm-midnight due to local restrictions. You may purchase firewood from us or gather your own. :-)

Our property is in Howard County, Maryland, and is super convenient to I-95, I-295, Hwy 32, and I-70. It is centrally located between Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, and Frederick, MD. We are located right off of Highway 32 down a long, private paved driveway. What makes our property unique is all that it has to offer--it's an 18 acre oasis with mature woods protected by a conservation deed, lightly rolling hills, beautiful fields, wetlands, and a pond. It is not surprising to see deer and our local great blue heron on the property throughout the day. There is also a fire pit, which you are free to use. Firewood is free.

Our group of seven really enjoyed staying at the lodge in the middle of winter when the property was covered with snow. We loved hiking around the Rolling Ridge property and trying to identify all of the animal prints on the snow. Hearing and seeing a variety of woodpeckers was a highlight.
The fireplace gathering area was my favorite part of the lodge. It was a wonderful space to visit, make music, and play games. Wifi was easy to use and reliable.
The road and parking area were plowed well for easy access to the lodge.
We plan to return!

The farm animals and the farm fresh eggs were much appreciated. It was too cold to explore but the campsite met our needs for a one night stay. It was a bit tricky backing into the site. Rodney’s communications were excellent. The area looks like it would be lovely when the weather is more hospitable. We should have taken advantage of the offer to dump our tank as the Camping World didn’t honor the Good Sam perk of free use of the septic dump.

We had a wonderful time group camping at The Lodge At Opequon at Opequon Quaker Camp @ Rolling Ridge. Everyone loved the facility, nice and clean. Plenty of rooms and beds for everyone, and plenty of woods for fire to keep us warm and chilling. Bathrooms and showers were clean, and kitchen was very handy and useful. We enjoyed the outdoor, and there were plenty of other stuff offered by the campsite that we did not have time to use. Overall amazing experience and look forward to visiting again soon :)

1 night at Smith Ridge Harper's Ferry
The cabin was very well heated for hours in 30 degree and below weather. Well stocked with supplies, and Matt was helpful in providing freshly chopped firewood, lighter, and a grill! A big supply of drinking water and coffee. Had a great time having a bonfire the whole night. Porta potty was pretty decent too. Matt seemed like a cool host in general, and gave us great suggestions for hiking! Would recommend to anyone and I would probably hang out with him if he invited us.

This was my group’s second time camping at Smith Ridge, hosted by Matt. This time I had a bigger group (7 people, 5 tents, and room for more). We had a great time again, and the onsite firewood we were able to purchase kept us warm during the 25 degree weather! Another plus was the porta-potty across from where we parked so we didn’t have to dig a hole in the snow. My group will 100% keep returning to camp here!
