3 nights at Perdido Overland Overnight Camp

The posting for this campsite by this host does not even begin to describe how beautiful and off grid this place was. Met briefly with the host and truly enjoyed the stay. If you are looking for a beginner's off-road experience and a place to unplug from the world this place is perfect. I highly recommend it. There were places to hike and the stargazing made this trip worth it.

This camp is on the edge of the Christmas Mtns. The peace and quiet was just what we needed to let go of the stresses of life. Having the shelter for shade provided just the right place to setup a hammock and take a much needed afternoon nap. If only I could duplicate the serenity of this site at home. Then life would be perfect. Brad was an excellent host and we are already planning our next trip.

Weekend Trip to Casa de Keaveny Cabin and Campsite

The best experience I ever had! Jim is very welcoming and friendly. The cabin he built is stuffed with love and intention. Everything is so thoughtful and well made. If you go there, you have to watch the night sky! It is beyond comprehension. Suited for 2, perfect for 4, maybe a little narrow for 6. Bring enough water and supplies. Thoughtful use of resources like water and electricity is mandatory.

Weekend Trip to Perdido Overland Overnight Camp

We love the mountains the shrouded the camp site. It was peaceful. We call it our place to disconnect from stress. We visited there two years ago fo our honeymoon. We are planning to go back an visit soon. We wished we would have booked more days.

We were grateful for the electric hookup in Elena's place after a few days in Big Bend! We did not get to meet Elena but her mom was very nice and helped us get situated. Simple setup and walking distance to restaurant. What else can you want!

2 nights at Sky Ranch Terlingua

A great, secluded shelter that's not only got shade, but it's great at blocking the wind! Although it's a little over a mile off the pavement, I had zero issues getting my fully loaded Goldwing motorcycle there and back numerous times. The host was super communicative and responsive to questions, really put my mind at ease for a first HipCamp experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The shelter was really nice while it was windy. It kept our tents and things safe from the wind and the heat as well. We had a really good time. The views were great and the hosts were friendly.

Oh my gosh. This was easily my favorite campsite I've ever stayed at. El Groupo was perfect, and Jason and his animals were so pleasant and hospitable. I can't recommend this place enough. Thanks for everything, Jason!! WE WILL BE BACK!

4 nights at Sky Ranch Terlingua

This place was really close to the park entrance, which made for an easy drive to BBNP. We were able to fit our 4 person tent inside the shelter, which turned out to be a good idea as the winds get really strong out there. Great views of the stars at night and very quiet, even though a couple of other rentals are near by. No cell signal, but that was part of the goal. Camp owner was really good at communicating and providing super helpful information. Would definitely camp there again.

We had a great week tent camping on Jason’s land. Our site, “El Grupo” provided a quiet, private and peaceful base camp for us to explore from. Jason was incredibly communicative and addressed our every request and need promptly. We’d definitely stay again.

13 nights at Perdido Overland Overnight Camp

Back for a fourth two-week visit, enjoyed myself more than ever. I come for the solitude, which is far greater than you'd expect from driving down a few miles of dirt road. The campsite is literally ringed by mountains, a bowl that mostly hides what few buildings are in the vicinity. Brad and Marilynn's acreage backs up against state-owned land (which you're welcome to explore), so you really do have a vast area to yourself. No mechanical noises aside from what you bring with you, plus the occasional private plane using the Terlingua Ranch airport a few miles away. Sunrises and sunsets are the best!

3 nights at 9 Points Camp

Great location, easy to get too. Great for three vehicles as we each had our own dedicated set up. Host were great with communication and ensuring our needs were met. Would consider using again next time we’re out that way. The host also gave us great information on locals spots to clean up and eat. Worth the stay!

Weekend Trip to Agua Fria Adventure

Getting out to this open area of West Texas was amazing. This spot is a perfect place to disconnect for a few days. If you love geology, this spot has some of the coolest rocks to check out. My two dogs loved being here and didn't run into any other animals or people during our stay. We took the drive slow with my RV but did not have any problems following John's directions.

Paisano Azul Ranch is on 30 acres located by Terlingua Creek. The property is just minutes from the Terlingua Ghost Town and a short 3 mile drive to the Big Bend National park. Come pitch your tent or park your camper amid the peaceful desert hillside with views of plateaus that lead to the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. There is a fire pit on site for you to toast marshmallows or cozy up near, and you can enjoy a bite to eat at the picnic table provided at each site. The picnic tables are placed beneath shade sails. There are two nice and new desert tan flushing Porta-Potties on-site, as well as showers for guests to use. These come in handy after a long day hiking. We hope you'll enjoy the beautiful open sky sunsets, sunrises, and stargazing as much as we do. We are located just 3 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore - you can hike, bike, canoe camp; kayak, off-road, swim, go horseback riding, visit hot springs, as well as visit restaurants, galleries, and listen to great music in Terlingua. There is something for everyone to feel free to bring the whole family. DIRECTIONS: Once you are on Road Runner Circle, go past the house on the left with the Christmas lights on. Please continue down the road and follow the road around the curve to the left. The campsites will be on the left and side behind the rock walls. The campsite number that is booked is the campsite you will stay in. Additional details to note: - We now have an above ground pool to keep cool in during the summer! Covered with a shade sail the water stays nice and chilly. ($10 fee/person) - You can stay connected if you'd like to, as cell reception and wifi are both available by the showers. Feel free to unplug during your stay though. - Seeing other campers on your trip at the campsite is very standard, as the sites are far enough apart to feel like they are yours, but they are not private. - Non potable water is provided on-site. We have an artisan well on property that has been certified as drinkable. The showers and non potable water is located approximately 1/4 mile from campsites 1-7. Super easy to get to, a quarter mile of two wheel drive easy gravel road from the highway. Just minutes to food, grocery, showers, toilets, gas, etc... Not the most beautiful spot, neighbors in sorta run down houses, but there are $150 rental cabins a block away,. A great place to book up for a group of friends. I take 15 to 20 buddies each March. Please note there are no toilets or showers on site, but 24 hour free toilets and $3 pay showers are only a 2 minute drive away at Big Bend Resort and Adventures.

Overview

Characterized by a vast, open range area, with a mix of mountains and plateaus, this remote part of Texas has all the trappings of the Wild West. In fact, unlike the eastern part of the Lone Star State, which is often clubbed together with elsewhere in the American South, this region feels decidedly Southwestern, sharing much in common—at least geologically—with neighboring parts of both Mexico and New Mexico. this part of the state is largely arid, with hot summers and mild winters that can get cold at night, and it's a fantastic spot for camping during the fall and spring shoulder seasons.

Where to go

Northwestern Texas

The southwestern half of the Texas panhandle is often grouped together with West Texas and is home to the city of Lubbock. Geographically, it's part of the Llano Estacado, which extends into eastern New Mexico, among the largest mesas on the continent. Natural areas in the region include Big Spring State Park, Caprock Canyons State Park, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

The Trans-Pecos Region

The westernmost part of the state lies west of the Pecos River and is by far the least-populated area of the state. In fact, most of the region’s commercial activity takes place in the far west of town, in El Paso. Travel east from El Paso and you'll soon find yourself in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert, home to the towering peaks of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

The El Paso Area

Although El Paso is more known for its historic sites and urban activities, the city and its surrounding areas have plenty for outdoor adventurers. Popular spots include Franklin Mountains State Park, a hit among hikers, and Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site, which offers a fine mix of hiking and rock climbing opportunities, plus around 20 campsites.

Big Bend and Around

Encompassing Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and the surrounding areas, this part of West Texas is largely dominated by public lands. along with the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area and the Chinati Mountains State Natural Area. It gets its name from a large bend in the Rio Grande, which divides this region from neighboring Mexico.
