They say that Santa Anna's army, invading from Mexico, may have crossed through our area on their way to the Alamo. This may be because our part of the river includes some of the more shallow areas of the Medina River. We're a five acre piece of an historic Texas ranch in Southwest San Antonio, just 20-minutes from downtown, sitting along the Medina River. Come for the day or stay the night for some primitive camping. We've got plenty of room for tents, roof-top-tent setups or car/van dry-camping. We’re currently in the building/restoring process, but we’ll have some electrical, drinking water, fire pits, plenty of shade, compost toilets, water in the river, and plenty of good vibes.  Old Herrera Ranch has been in our family since the early 1800's and holds a lot history. A couple of our old buildings, the "jacals", are dated from around the 1830-40's. You'll also see the old "Dance Hall" which is great for hanging out or even some cover if it rains. They say that Santa Anna's army, invading from Mexico, may have crossed through our area on their way to the Alamo. This may be because our part of the river includes some of the more shallow areas of the Medina River. We enjoyed camping at site #2, along the Medina River. The stars were bright and we could hear the river. The shower and restrooms were clean. Valerie, one of the hosts, was very welcoming and friendly. My only issue was this one mocking bird who woke us up each day…we think they either thought our car was a bird feeder or that their reflection was a possible mate. They attacked the side of my car over and over, until we put a towel are that part of the car. Aside from the bird, a very peaceful stay.

Private primitive camping spot. You are able to park your car close. Shaded. Woke up to turkeys gobbling a couple mornings and my last morning there were cows crazing on the pasture property next to this campsite! :) The shared kitchen was nice, and if you need to boil water to make food, note it took quite a long time for the pot of water to boil, so take that into consideration for any foods you may want to cook on the double burner. Loved the private bathrooms. They are “outside”/open air- meaning there is no ceiling, but there is the large roof that covers the entire area. There’s also a fan for hot weather and a heater for cool weather to help make the space more comfortable. I would definitely camp here again as it was a good location to access Pedernales Falls SP and other local hiking spots/state parks.

This Hipcamp spot is hands down one of the best we’ve stayed at. The property is massive (around 1100 acres), which makes it perfect for overlanders who want space, privacy, and the freedom to truly choose their own camp spot. There are plenty of trails to explore, and the terrain keeps things interesting without feeling crowded or restricted. Warren, the host, was outstanding. He checked on us several times to make sure we had everything we needed and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. He was also incredibly kind with our kids and even let them play together, which made the experience feel more like visiting friends than just camping. If you’re into overlanding, off-grid camping, or just want a wide-open Texas camping experience, this place is hard to beat. Easily one of the best spots in Texas and we’ll definitely be back.

Weekend Trip to Boulderdash Cabin & Camping

This was my second time staying here and it did not disappoint. It even got better! There is a new bathroom ‘bivvy’ near the riverside campsites that made those late night/ early morning nature calls way easier to handle with no hill to climb. The owners were fantastic once again and I really valued their site manager, Valerie. She provided excellent customer support and had our firewood already at our campsite so we didn’t need to haul it down. This past weekend was very relaxing and peaceful. Will come back again. Highly recommend.

We stayed at Campsite 5 at Lost Woods and had a great experience overall. It rained the first 2–3 hours after we arrived, but we were able to get our tent set up just in time and waited it out. The site included a picnic table, a campfire setup, two chairs, and a small grill, which made things really convenient. There were also a few little paths toward the back of the campsite that our little furbabies had fun exploring. It was pretty secluded and private, which we appreciated. You can hear some traffic at night, but it didn’t ruin the experience for us. We had a good time and would definitely stay here again.

Super clean, high quality amenities. The sauna was awesome, love the smell of cedar. We tent camped, i would say if you come after a rain like we did, be careful on the road to the tent camping area as we had a Subaru forester that still slid around quite a bit in the mud. Overall I’d definitely recommend the spot, especially to tent campers who want to get away from everyone else while still having good amenities

We loved Primitive I- it was very secluded and away from the other campers! The water spigot isn’t at the site, but instead, up at the community area. The bathroom and showers were also clean, but it was near the entrance, away from the camp site. We would camp here again!

What a cool place! A historic site with a lot of character. It was actually accidentally listed when it wasn't open but the host very. Kindly let me camp there anyway! I'm very grateful and I loved having the place to myself, especially with all the history and old buildings. I didn't realize how close to the road it is so you can hear cars on that main highway. But it was also still winter and there weren't any leaves on the trees. So I'm sure that helps dampen the noise when the foliage is full. And it still didn't take away from the camping experience. Eventually I'd like to go back and spend time on the river. Thanks again to the hosts, would definitely recommend and the stargazing was awesome!!!
