Weekend Trip to Red Rooster Farm: AVL Adjacent!

If you are looking for something a bit different and sweet, Red Rooster Farm is your spot. Such a lovely and serene place tucked away on a rolling hill complete with a mountain view, sweet animals and everything you need in a clean, well-kept camper. Danielle and Gavin were extremely accommodating and hospitable, making sure to respond quickly to each of our questions and posts. The perks? Quiet vibe, a million stars at night, fresh and cool air, sunset over the mountains, and the most precious horses, donkey and goats (including babies!) that Danielle left food for us to feed and interact with. Shower with heat pump worked well and it was super cozy. We slept so well! Great Wifi. Waking up in the morning to sit outside with coffee was refreshing. We were able to ride in to Asheville and get a run in along the river and get dinner with no problem. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we are already talking about returning soon! Thanks, Dani and Gavin!

We absolutely loved tent-camping here for the weekend! Large space for our family of 5. Beautiful views, quiet and peaceful. Facilities were clean and easily accessible. Super close to many trail and hiking options in the Smokies. We loved hearing the many sounds of nature as we fell asleep. Host was very kind and helpful. Would definitely return and camp here in the future!

Great site! PERFECT location, just miles from Asheville without the congestion, and easy access to state parks, blue ridge parkway, and any other attraction you're visiting the area for! The site is clean and beautiful with relative privacy, but at site 3 you'll have a close neighbor. I highly recommend this place. Louedith has been great.

Weekend Trip to Farmhouse Gallery & Gardens

We were warmly greeted when we arrived, and treated with kindness like old friends the entire weekend. It’s a beautiful location, with an idyllic lily pad pond and captivating serene spots to rest in every direction. The grass was cut nicely on our site, and to allow us easy hiking around the bison pasture and goats. Curious peacocks followed us about. The barn swallows swooped and stole goose feathers and blooming dandelion. And I witnessed a bison stampede, only so briefly, when I suspect they thought I was planning to feed them. After which they returned to peaceful grazing. I can’t say enough to share how much we enjoyed this retreat. Thank you Pat for sharing your Walden Pond with us.

Weekend Trip to Raven Ridge

My dog and I had a wonderful time at the hilltop cabin. It was the perfect getaway. Very peaceful and the cabin even has a fridge/freezer and electric kettle. And their cow was an added bonus - unbothered and liked to join us when we were outside sometimes (: next time, I’d like to stay longer than a long weekend!

Beautiful land and lovely hosts! The site was perfect for our entire family. The kids loved roaming the land and seeing the animals (especially cows on the other side of the river who decided to take a swim!). There was a campsite within eyesight but the sound of the river made it feel like we were the only ones there. We couldn’t hear another soul, just nature! Beautiful spot. Would definitely recommend.

Nice wooded area with a pond , clean bathrooms, picnic tables under covered gigantic gazebo wot fridge , bbq grill and a Blackstone flat griddle. Beware the road leading to the sites are very windy and narrow. Nearby Roan State park has amazing views of NC and Tenn mountains from the top.

I would consider our homestead very mature from the standpoint of organic food production. We have been here 13 years developing the infrastructure. We raise three different kinds of heritage animal breeds as part of our permaculture regime - rabbits, chickens & pigs. I help found the Appalachian Homestead Association where we help teach people to raise their own food on a small homestead and learn what grows well locally. I teach permaculture and we have an extensive permaculture setup. We have large fenced garden using raised beds & low tunnels, as well as a year round greenhouse. We also have large growing spaces outside the fenced garden. We make extensive use of leaves which we collect from our woodland, then shred, then compost and finally filter thru a trommel I designed. We use the fine leaves as part of our soil block mix and larger leaf fragments for mulch. We use the 21 day fast compost method. Our pigs are the American Guinea Hog which is the original homestead pig dating back to the beginning of the US. They are very docile and friendly, small compared to commercial pink pigs. They forage on grass and acorns vs rooting like many other pig breeds. We also free range them. We are members of the American Guinea Hog Association. We recently purchased a bandsaw mill to utilize our woodland to construct additional building on the homestead and are now constructing a solar wood kiln for drying the sawmill output. Organic methods: We follow the Intelligent Gardner for soil health. We make heavy use of companion planting to deter pests. Certifications: we are organic in practice, but not certified Internet access provided, we have very high speed fiber connected wifi.

Nearly every day there is a small challenge, nothing comes easy, but all the coziness and comfort is there. The water is supplied by a spring above the mill. Electricity is generated by solar technology and a generator. All refrigeration and cooking appliances are propane; and so is the basic heat (propane again) - and a very old Jotul wood stove will do the rest. I sleep a lot on the day bed in the living room so the Sawmill can be comfortably rented for up to 4 guests. The outhouse is a thing of the past, just recently I installed a compositing toilet besides the bedroom.We also offer The Summit which is a high elevation, 2-story cabin surrounded by national forest which has evolved into an off-grid living and play space located at nearly 3300 feet elevation on a 1/2 acre flat with an incredible view. There are very private old forest service trails leading directly into the Pisgah National Forest.

The cabin sleeps 4-5 people comfortably. There is a full size bed that sleeps 2 in the main room of the cabin. There is a loft above that sleeps 2-3 more. A rolling library ladder is how the kids will access the loft area! So fun! The kitchen is complete with a refrigerator, electric stove, oven, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker. A peaceful mood is set by warm-toned sawmill lumber walls, recessed lighting in the ceiling, a kitchen window above the sink that overlooks the side yard campfire area and beautiful woods surrounding the cozy cabin. The bathroom is so nice with a stand-up shower, hand-made oak vanity, and a door to the "star-gazing" porch. Flood lighting lights up the area around the cabin at night so you might spot a deer, fox, or even a bear traveling through or getting a drink of water from the pond. You will instantly relax at the coziest cabin on earth. You deserve a get-away that actually recharges you! This cabin is for the couple or family that just wants to take a much needed break from the real world. If you want the true off-grid experience this is it ;) We do require guests to e-sign our rental agreement that we will email to you, and request a $300 security deposit hold (not a charge) that we will release upon checkout. Good Egg Tiny Home & Remodeled Barn

When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling. Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood. You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7. Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more. Whether it’s the absence of electricity (in the cabin), the quiet of the country, no city glow in the night sky, or the once common experience of the natural world dominating over human-made or human-crafted things, it’s astonishing for many of us to see and feel and experience without constant communications via text and email and the distractions of modern life. Many people write that they’ve learned an enormous amount about themselves, about homesteading or permaculture, and about alternate ways of being.
