The following are but a few of our favorite things to do within a short drive: visit Linville Falls, Caverns, Gorge and/or Winery; cruise the Blue Ridge parkway; pick apples at the Orchard at Altapss; tube/kayak down the Catawba river; hike beautiful Tom’s Creek Falls or Crabtree Falls; cross Grandfather Mountains mile high bridge and explore the nearby towns of Spruce Pines or Little Switzerland. The scenic drives to Asheville, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Sugar and Beech mountains make them each wonderful day-trip destinations as well.
We are happy to supply a comprehensive list upon request (including distance, drive time and links with directions) but there is also plenty of exploring to do right at here on site where nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts are encouraged to explore, on foot or mountain-bike, anywhere within our 170 acres (or the adjoining 250 acres owned by the US Forestry Service off our North Western border) and are likely to catch glimpses of turkey, beaver, deer, fox, eastern box turtle and the many species of songbird and raptor.

DuPont Bike Retreat is located 1/4 mile from the Fawn Lake Access area into DuPont State Forest. The DBR is 37 acres and has a pond with a dock and numerous camping sites available. The property used to hold Glass Feather Studio, which was a glass art studio and is now Glass Feather Lodge. The mountain view from the indoor porch is amazing and there are several places to relax and enjoy this view. There is an outdoor shower and bike wash station behind the lodge and two indoor bathrooms (one with shower) off the porch. The lower Pond Area of the property has a port-a-john near the pond. Our 19 acres on Brushy Mountain is nestled away in the Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area of the Nantahala National Forest, the largest of NC's four National Forests with over 500,000 acres of pristine wilderness. The famous Iron Bridge over the headwaters of the Chattooga River is just a short drive away down Bull Pen Road. You will find some of the best trout fishing and hiking trails in all of North Carolina at your doorstep. This temperate rain forest is enjoyable in every season and is exceptional in its ecological diversity and abundance. If you are interested in hiking to beautiful waterfalls, fishing in native trout streams, bird watching or star gazing, this is the place for you! And if you need supplies from town, Cashiers is the closest and is about 25 minutes away and Highlands is about a 45 minute drive. Both have great restaurants and shops to check out.
Our gated, gravel driveway is steep and a half mile long. You will need an all-wheel or 4 Wheel drive vehicle to get up the driveway without spinning. There is ample space to turn around to park, but due to the nature of our driveway we limit the length of RV's to no more than 20 feet. If you do not feel comfortable maneuvering your RV up steep. winding and gravel terrain, please email me to discuss.

Dogpatch Farms is a farm offering Broad River access( canoe portage under construction but usable) campsites with the goal of making camping affordable again. We aren’t shooting for fancy or flashy just a clean quiet spaces and friendly safe environment where a person or group can enjoy nature without breaking the bank.
We have one space for a RV/Camper with power water and septic dump ( down by the Barndo) and only a few with power and water only ( up by the well house)($60 and $40 per night respectively).
Primitive areas vary from hillside, river side and open field all of which have an indoor toilet access and outside ( soon inside too) shower.
Barndo is an active construction zone as we turn it into a full facility with cooking and laundry benefits so don’t expect fancy but that’s not our goal.
Expect to see a sweet dog, a goat and probably a chicken ( and even enjoying a free egg) and definitely a tractor.
Have a good time but I don’t tolerate stupid and you are expected to not leave a mess like a true outdoorsman should.
There is an of wildlife including beavers, turkeys( roosting in the valley), deer and such to see because of our low impact approach so observe but don’t harass.
We hope to become your destination and guide to the great outdoors.

We just retired from Active Duty Air Force! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin.
When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it. We just completed building our cabin there.

We had the best time here! It was a little warm in the tent during the day in August but who stays in the tent in the middle of the day?!? Everything was perfect and they thought of so many details to make your stay memorable! We paid the extra fee to use the spa and it was perfect well worth the experience! They’ve really put in a lot of time and effort into building this campsite and we truly enjoyed it!

This is a nice, clean campsite that is great for a weekend jaunt. Directions to the property were clear and the host was responsive. Camp site 1 has ample room for at least 3 small to medium tents. I timed my visit with a meteor shower, but alas, the stars were not aligned for good viewing that night! Site one is in the trees so did not have good star viewing, but I did get a good viewing of the sunset from the grill area! This area had lots of seating and open space. I appreciated the path lights on the way back down to my campsite because I can get lost in a straight line. Next time I want to see the stars I will spring for one of the yurts or the geodesic domes as these have much nicer viewing areas and are really where it's at. These sites had fewer mosquitos as well. The trail on the site was OK as far as hiking goes. I did enjoyed seeing wildlife such as wildflowers, deer and tons of types of fungi on the trail. I would recommend the yurt campsites to friends.

We loved our two night stay at Candy Mountain! The goats were absolutely adorable and friendly. Scott was a great host, and we really enjoyed learning more about the farm. The outhouse was super clean. The WiFi also worked really well, which was an added bonus. We also got goat milk lotion and soap from their shop, definitely check out their store! Overall it was a very peaceful and a much needed relaxing stay for us.

Starlight Hills is absolutely incredible. I have stayed in the yurts and have also camped in a primal spot, no matter what option, a great time is always had. I stayed in a yurt this past trip, it was absolutely down pouring rain, not a single drop of water got into the yurt.

Beautiful campground! My favorite part was how private the sites were. We stayed in our small teardrop camper in Car Site 4. The viewpoint with the BBQ and tables a very short walk away where we laid on the hammocks and watched the sun go down. There are two trails--the overlook trail in particular was beautiful!!! The outdoor showers were hot, super clean, and how lovely it is to shower outside. I didn't expect the vending machines, it was a nice touch!!! It's close to South Mountain State Park if you want some longer hikes very close by. The glamping sites were beautiful even though we didnt stay in there. We also were able to have the dogs off leash for the most part and they LOVED it. Will return. Lots of love put into this campground and can't wait to see it continue to evolve.

We had such a wonderful time this weekend at DuPont Bike Retreat. We had a large group and stayed on the two Hilltop sites. It worked out perfectly. Cathy helped us navigate to amazing waterfalls and Todd showed us the best kindling making tool on site. They are such kind people and their campsite amenities are great.

We loved staying at Candy Mountain Goat farm! We were the only ones tent camping this weekend so the camp host was kind enough to give us pretty much free rein of the sites! They were also super attentive and helpful, with great recommendations for things to do near by! The property was beautiful and all of the animals were so cute! I highly recommend staying here!

Very quiet and relaxing! Laying in the hammock at the top of the hill by the grilling area first thing in the morning, overlooking the mountains, was absolute bliss! Bring your own towels, charcoal lighter fluid, food for grilling, and mosquito spray.
