Lake Taghkanic is a great place for both summer and winter stays, with plenty of tent campsites as well as cabins and cottages, and a variety of activities to do year round. For winter folks, there's cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails, as well as ice skating and ice fishing areas, and plenty of fire pits to warm those chilly bones. For summer lovin', there are two beaches, so if someone kicks sand in your potato salad (accidentally, of course), you can just go to another beach and pretend like it never happened. The only sleeping quarters that are on the water are some of the cottages in the West End Cottage Area, so if you're planning on playing Beach Party Bingo, plan accordingly or be willing to walk a bit from your tent or cabin.

Bring loads of extra blankets and warm clothing. Boots are a must. Although the driveway is kept clear, car should ideally be AWD or 4WD depending on weather conditions.

For generations, the majestic waterfall has been revered for its spectacular beauty. It’s considered a sacred site central to local land rematriation work with the Kanienkeha:ka.
Coursing between two outcroppings in a deep ravine, the waterfall crashes down over mossy rock shelves into emerald swimming holes and through dramatic clay beds. It’s one of those extraordinary spots on earth that make you feel like you’re in another world. The sites aren’t suitable for parties or loud groups.
It's about a 10 minute hike to the waterfall where you can spend the day swimming, exploring the clay beds and looking for fossils in the 280 million year old gorge. In the evening, make a campfire and fall asleep under the stars listening to the river below.
The hike is steep and appropriate footwear is required. All hiking is at your own risk. Although your path to the waterfall is private and the waterfall is on private property, there may be other guests or locals that access the waterfall further down the road. There is no glass or alcohol allowed at the falls.
Be aware that you may hear your camping neighbors in the woods. For this reason, we ask that you don’t play amplified music and keep noise down after 10pm to enjoy the sounds of frogs, crickets, owls, and night songs of the countryside
At the entrance to the campsites there is a barn community room with a charging station, cold water sink, fridge, coffee maker, cookware, and a port-a-potty. There are 5 gallon solar shower bags that you can use at your campsite. You are responsible for filling them and putting them in the sun to heat the water.
This is a leave no trace site. Take all your trash with you when you leave. Bring your own biodegradable soap for dishes and toilet paper for the port-a-potty!
Firewood is available onsite for $1 per log.
The Schoharie Valley is said to be the most fertile valley east of the Mississippi. It is still wild, unspoiled country and there are many local farms stands with fresh produce and organic meat close by.
Within a 5 miles radius is a general store, Scrumpy Ewe Cidery, Panther Creek Arts, Rooted Movement, the Sap Bush Country Store and Café, and Mustang Valley (a wild mustang sanctuary). Nearby hikes include Looking Glass Pond and Vroman's Nose, and others.

This campsite is nestled in the deep woods of a 120 acre farm that offers beautiful views coming and going. After being allowed to use the restroom at the stone farmhouse, you will then go rustic and start your 3/4 - 1 mile hike in (approximately 20 minutes to the campsite) past the fields and pond down the path into the woods. The trail is remote and you will instantly be able to leave the sights and sounds of civilization behind you and breath the clean forest air. Wear good hiking shoes because portions of the hike are uneven and rocky.
This site is best for experienced campers who know how to pack light with just the essentials as there is no tractor service to this campsite.
When you arrive at the campsite, you will be within 20 feet of a year round stream with brook trout and in a hundred foot tall hemlock canopy nestled between two brook meadows. A 9,000 acre forested preserve abuts our property so you will be able to completely relax, bird watch, enjoy the wildlife, or fish for a brook trout breakfast without hearing the sounds of anyone but yourselves.
The campsite has a stone fire pit, split log benches for seating, a canvas privacy blind around a stand of trees where the composting toilet resides, and a food bag lift to attach your food and trash bags to about 100 yards from the campsite.
Unlimited Split firewood is free next to where you will park that you can take down to the site. All trash needs to be carted out with you. We can't accept mixed trash as it will attract animals that will knock over the trashcans and make a mess. No food goes in our personal trashcans as we have learned this the hard way. Thanks!

Weekend Trip to Locust Grove Waterfall
We stayed at Monica's on a multi state wide hiking trip as a brief in between. Really wish we could have spent more time tho! Of all our stays between Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York- her place was so special and memorable and our favorite. We had our very own waterfall and swimming hole and the entire place to ourselves. Monica was quick to respond to our questions and if I wasn't gate keeping her spot for our future stay, I would highly recommend her place to all of my friends!😆❤️

Weekend Trip to Monarch Meadows
After staying at 5 or 6 other locations, this glamp is going down as one of my favorites thus far in the Hudson valley/catskill region. Theres quite a lot to be said for having an entire 17 acres to yourself (at the time of our stay). The grounds are just as the host describes in her listing. If you are into plants, nature, healthy forest, etc, this glamp should be a must on your list. The spacious tent is a short drive thru the woods down a bumpy road but managed fine in a Volkswagen Jetta. The host was nice, helpful and welcoming. Both the inside of the tent and the front covered porch were clean and perfectly spacious enough to make our stay comfortable…even in the pouring rains we had one morning. I highly recommend staying a couple nights at this glamp site….we wish we could have stayed another night!!!

John and AC were such lovely hosts! Their space is gorgeous and had some really helpful amenities. The outhouse was spotlessly clean and they had a shower, grill, cooking supplies, and a cooler. The creek was super fun for the kids. The campsite is not far from the road so it’s easy to drive to.

Weekend Trip to Quentins Treehouse

This was our second trip to the treehouse and it was just as lovely as the first. There were some new improvements added from last year which were appreciated - a larger water heater for the outdoor shower, a canopy above the picnic table on the patio, and a wood shed for the fire pit. Jeremy and his family were wonderful as always. Hoping to make this an annual trip for our group!

Weekend Trip to High Peak Meadows
We have the most fantastic time at this site. Our two dogs were happy and calm the entire stay and with the creek is just down a small path the dogs were always well worn out and tired. The creek can easily be seen from the camp. Karen is a super friendly and wonderful person that wants to ensure you have a great stay. We will be going back quite often.

We had a great time at Evan and Laura’s camping spot! It was our first time camping as a family and we were really grateful for all the amenities that made the experience so much easier! We loved cooking dinner and s’mores over the campfire, and our kids especially loved visiting the goats and chickens :) thanks Evan and Laura for a great stay!

This site was the PERFECT place to camp with two little ones (1 and 4). We had a wonderful time hiking nearby at Bish Bash falls and then making dinner and s'mores in the evening. Having the showers and toilet close by was great for my little ones. And it was such a bonus that we didn't have to set up the tent ourselves.
We also got some cute visitors: 3 little bear cubs, so make sure to lock up your food!
Joanna was such a great host with wonderful communication and very generous with her time. Can't wait to come back.

Evan was very responsive which is an important starting point. Very helpful.
If you're looking for a basic, but well set-up camping site where you don't have to do a lot of set up yourself, this checks the box. The tent is ready to go as is the bedding inside, the campfire, table to eat at, tools for the grill/eating, towels etc all provide most of what you need, which is great.
The site itself is well located - we enjoyed the beautiful Candlewood Trail hike as well as Lake Canopus - both of which were only a handful of minutes away.
The one thing I will flag - as others have - is proximity between your tent relative to your car as well as the bathroom/shower. They are definitely not very far, and it's doable, but it definitely creates a layer of having to being strategic about how/when you make the trip.
Given this is camping and it's dark - trips to the bathroom/shower after hours can be a bit challenging - so just keep that in mind. Evan is very upfront about this - so nothing that is misadvertised - but something to remember. Same with the distance from car to tent. It's not the end of the world, but we wanted to store all our food overnight in the car as to avoid animals, so having to go up and down the short "hike" in the dark and again in the morning to get our breakfast was something to consider.
Overall - it was a very nice experience and we made some great memories. Evan was great too!
