The Fool is the zero card in the Tarot deck. This distinct energy holds wild potential for novel connection and adventure. A Fool is in the moment ~ having access to childlike wonder and the ability to move without judgment or tension. This beautiful spot can similarly inspire, encourage and shake up all who visit. This listing is part of an ever growing project, which aims to create a playful, off-grid space to retreat, create and gather with loved ones. The listing currently includes the garden outhouse, meditation dome and access to mesa roads for long walks or bike rides. While there is 2 listing options (bus and camping) we only book one and you’ll have the site to yourself. Located in El Prado, surrounded by rolling sage and mountain views. It’s around the corner from the Toas Mesa Mothership, 10mins to the Gorge bridge, 20mins to central Taos and 30(ish) to the ski valley, rock climbing and wild hot springs. If you’ve never visited a high mesa desert: plan for extreme variations in weather and horizon to horizon views, the likes of which only found at sea. These 5 acres, tucked at the end of a road feel quite wild, despite proximity to town and the regional airport, which does create noise/light pollution. Even so, most find the roaring silence both intense and soothing. The main house is well apart from the bus site and each area has its own privacy and full views. Small camp site surrounded by a sea of sagebrush, where heaven meets earth. Set alongside a private walking path that leads to the top of the Rio Grande National Monument and the rim of the iconic Taos canyon. Enjoy expansive earthly and celestial views and epic sunsets and moonrises over the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. I am just getting set up with hipcamp and don’t have much to offer beyond a beautiful camping spot on private property, on the very best of the Taos Mesa. I am currently very busy finishing the construction of my home, and work out here almost daily. I sometimes have visitors and work exchange staying on the property, but you will have a private and separate area to park and camp. (Please note that that there are no bathroom facilities available, so please come prepared with your own set up). If you are interested in earthen building construction or off-grid-life, I am happy to talk with you about it if time allows. I request that guests conduct themselves in keeping with the peaceful stillness and quiet of this landscape. Please no loud music. Thank you and welcome ✨

We call it Big Little Hideaway and it will take you about 30 seconds upon arriving to discover why. My wife and I had been coming to Taos to ski for years and years and always felt at home, but it was a Summer trip that made us realize how much our souls belong here. My wife envisioned a property with a beautiful gate so that it feels like a courtyard (And she got it!) and after visiting the hot springs we knew this was The Spot! This is perfect if you're looking for a little bit of everything; mountain views, minutes away from hiking, paddle boarding, hot springs, skiing, and endless roads and beauty to explore. We're 15 minutes away from Taos and Arroyo Secco where you can enjoy great food, galleries and shopping, and 30 minutes away from the awesome Taos Ski Valley.Ideal for couples or families of 4 or close friends.

The Enchanted Circle Campground sits on the Avalon Ranch. It is 161 owned acres surrounded by a state trust lease. We are very proud to have been voted #1 Campground in NM 4 years in a row and ranked Top 5 by Forbes in the country. We have 8 Sites to choose from. (No large RVs at 4, 7 or 8) Campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome. Free potable water is available as well as a portable toilet. For cooking, you will have a fire pit, with a cast iron grill. Every site (but 7) has a standing charcoal grill, with tongs, a spatula and a grill brush. A fire extinguisher and a shovel. We hang a hand washing jug at every site for your convenience, with potable water, but do not suggest this for drinking water source. The property was originally homesteaded in 1893. It was also the first potato farm in NM. It has seven ground-fed springs that run year-round and is officially the Coyote Creeks Headwaters. The springs converge after filling 4 of our ponds in the marshland where the potatoes were grown. A family of 4 lived in the first dwelling built here, not much larger than a shed. Since that time, 2 homes, 1 of which still stands, a barn, a smokehouse, and 4 other outbuildings were constructed. There are old wagons and farm equipment from the late 1800s and early 1900's still strewn about the ranch. We are home to Huge herds of Elk, mule deer, turkeys, prairie dogs, eagles, black bears, 9 horses, chickens, pigs, goats, our 2 dogs and 4 cats, and the occasional Mountain Lion. We live here year-round. We love our land and want to share it with others. I am a Veteran and our intent is to eventually have a Veterans Retreat facility here. Not a retreat itself, but rather a location for all of the retreats, nationwide, to be able to utilize, so they can use the funds they have to do what they do best. You are helping to make that possible. We do pride ourselves on minimally impacting our land. We strive to keep it clean and as close to nature as we can. And as always, Veterans, LEOs, and Fire Fighters are always free for one night up to 4 guests. Just book your reservation, and show us your ID during your stay, and we will reimburse you for your last night with us.

Two Hawk Ranch is comprised of 12 acres of high mountain valley meadows, hay fields, Acequias, trees and the Rio Chiquito. Yes, we are located at approximately 7,800ft elevation. My husband and I stumbled across this beautiful and serene property by accident in 2020 just as Covid hit. We feel blessed to be here and feel the need to share it’s calming, restful qualities. We have three adult children and have three grandchildren. We also have eight international children as we hosted international students for four years. You are welcome to come sit by the fire and be social or just do your own thing. Learn more about this land: Sites located across the property for up to 8 groups. The RV camping is located near one of our horse corrals and above our irrigation Acequia, above or next to the house, or in the field down by the arena after haying is complete (usually after the first week of July as long as the rain cooperates). Can back in or pull through and has 110v power nearby. No water to hook up to, but we can fill your tanks via hose by the house or arena. Other sites available if you don’t need power, or have a generator. Property is within a 100yds of national forest service that gives access to off-roading, hiking, biking, horse riding, fishing, and winter snowshoeing, cross country skiing, etc. We are located just off the High Road to Taos in Llano, 29 miles south of Taos and 55 miles north of Santa Fe. We are eight miles from Ski Sipapu and eight miles from Rio Santa Barbara Canyon. Your well-behaved pets are welcome. We also have one great dane (Raggy), a great dane mix (The Morrigan), one ranch cat (Sasha) and four horses (Gentry, Shadow, Mattie & Jr G). The dogs are a rescue of some kind. The Morrigan is black, 3.5 yrs old and comes out of a rescue in AZ. She went in with her litter as a 5 month old puppy, and she came here about a year later. She is reticent and suspicious, so ignore her and she will come up to you on her own; continue to ignore her. Ragnar (Raggy) is our most recent rescue and is from Las Cruces. He's 3 yrs old and a merle. He suffers from anxiety and fears children. We are working him through his fears, and he is doing really well. The weather here tends to run cooler, as we are located in the mountains in a small valley at approximately 7,800 ft above sea level. In the spring through fall, temps will average from mid 40°F up to mid 60°F at night and mid 60°F up to mid 90°F during the day. Temps can get into the 100°F's in the summer, but that is rare. Generally if the sun is out, it is warm or hot even tho the actual temps are not. It's a high-altitude affect. The opposite is true as well. Cloud cover will feel cooler. We also experience monsoon style rains that occur in the afternoon generally starting in July and running into August or later. In the late fall through early spring during winter, the average temps usually run from 0°F up to mid 20°F at night with occasional dips into negative temps and in the day generally run from mid 20°F up to the mid 40°F range. Same as above - if the sun is out, it will feel warmer, etc. We do hay the fields, so we may have tractor activity going on in the late spring and early summer. In the winter we will be clearing snow from the roads and feeding hay. Can't wait to see everyone this year!

Camping near Taos guide

Where to go

Carson National Forest

Just west of Taos, Carson National Forest features over 1.5 million acres of mountain terrain to adventure through, including the tallest peak in all of New Mexico. Take a guided llama trek, ride a hot air balloon, or raft the Rio Grande on a 17-mile section running through the stunning Rio Grande Gorge. Campers will find tons of mountain biking options here, as the forest is home to one of the highest-ranked trails in the state. Book a campsite with showers to wind down after an action-packed day of exploring. Just don’t forget to organize a permit for camping, fishing, or hunting.

Orilla Verde Recreation Area

Nestled along the Rio Grande and only a 40-minute drive from Taos, the Orilla Verde Recreation Area is a great spot to settle into, especially if wildlife is a must-see. Bighorn sheep, mule deer, cougars, and hawks are commonly spotted in Orilla Verde, and Native American petroglyphs can also be seen on archaeological rock walls. Orilla Verde Recreation Area features campsites, although advance reservations are not available. Arrive early and be prepared with a backup plan.

Black Rock Hot Springs

Sit back and relax at the Black Rock Hot Springs, set in the canyon of the Rio Grande and roughly a 20-minute drive from Taos. The access trail is open year-round, but seasonal closures are common in winter as the high water levels make it inaccessible. Look for campsites near the hot springs for a short commute, and get going early in the morning to beat the crowds. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leashes, while clothing is optional.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Taos for tent camping and aquatic activities is the summer months of May through September. Thunderstorms are common in July and August, so a raincoat and waterproof shoes will be a huge benefit. March, April, and November are the off-season, so it’s less busy, but there won’t be any access to skiing or other winter-based activities. Snow begins in early to mid-December and lasts through March, with January bringing the coldest temps.
