Overview

Laconia is one of the many small towns that dot New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Set largely on the shores of Lake Winnisquam, Laconia reaches all the way to Lake Winnipesaukee, providing ample opportunities for enjoying the water, whether by boating, paddling, or swimming. Besides being out on the water, you can go hiking in the mountains that surround the lakes and explore the attractions in town, which include historic sites such as the Belknap Mill and several restaurants, including classic diners.

Weirs Beach

Around a 15-minute drive north of Laconia, Weirs is the most popular beach in the Lakes Region. Along the beach’s boardwalk, you’ll find multiple attractions, including the Scenic Railroad, which makes several daily runs along parts of Lake Winnipesaukee; the Winnipesaukee Pier, with restaurants, games arcades, shops, and boat rentals; and the Weirs Beach Drive-in Theater.

Gunstock Mountain

A 15-minute drive east of Laconia, Gunstock Mountain Resort is an all-season destination that is home to one of the longest ziplines in the United States, as well as many miles of cross country and snowshoe trails. 

Castle in the Clouds

In the Ossipee Mountains of Moultonborough and Tuftonboro, a 45-minute drive from Laconia, Castle in the Clouds encompasses over 5,000 conserved acres with trails, waterfalls, and excellent views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains. The area is named for Lucknow, an Arts and Crafts-style mansion built in the mountains in 1914. 

Sabbaday Falls

In the White Mountain National Forest, and a stop along the scenic Kancamagus Highway, the three-story Sabbaday Falls drop 45 feet in total and are reached by an easy trail. Other nearby waterfalls along the highway include Champney Falls, Lower Falls. and Rocky Gorge.

When to go

Laconia and the surrounding area is a four-season destination, with something going on any time of year. Winter offers snowsports and brings the Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby, while the Laconia Motorcycle Week, held over nine days in June, is one of the world’s oldest motorcycle rallies and features races, stunt shows, and live music. The area is a very popular place to view fall foliage, especially along the Kancamagus Highway and Scenic Railroad.
