Before our forest was "owned," it belonged to the Odawa people. Once white settlers arrived and governments were established, land deeds were written. We traced those deeds back through the Oceana County Register of Deeds and found that larger tracts of land were owned by people from Chicago and California, which were later divided into smaller parcels.
Interestingly, one owner lost the property after failing to pay back taxes of $3.50, shortly after World War II. It is likely that he never returned.
In the mid-1900s, Ed Dewey was the owner. Today, we have a cabin on the east side of the 40 acres that was built by Ed, entirely constructed with oak. He had three sawmills there, each powered by the engines of old Studebakers. He cut and milled enormous oak trees, using the wood to construct crates for transporting cherries. Today, you can still see old oak crates on various farms, but they are slowly being replaced by plastic.
Ed never finished the little cabin, and the story goes that he died there.
The next owners were a couple from Inkster, near Detroit. Despite Ed leaving an acre of "yard art" all over, the place was used as a vacation home after a 50-foot long mobile home was placed near the cabin. As they aged, they sold off their property to us. First, we acquired the 20 acres where the Cozy Camper Cabin resides, then the 7 acres near Weaver Road and 44th, and finally, the remaining 13 acres with the cabin. We began purchasing the property in parcels in 1992 for $500 an acre and owned it all by 1998.
From 1998 to 2008, we removed the mobile home, cleaned up all the yard art, refurbished the cabin, added a garage, and built a new shed nearby. The Hipcamp shed was originally built in 1999 and has been used for storage until it was converted into a unique little place in the woods in 2021.
Over the years, our Forester has carefully managed the property. We have logged three times. The first round was to remove 75 huge oak trees. The second round involved culling mature poplar trees. The last time, we took out 276 mature oaks and beeches. A Woodsman spent a year cutting down the tops of the trees. Clearing these old growth trees revitalized the forest, as planned.
Today, there are over two miles of trails running throughout the property. Some were logging roads, while others were carved out over time. The land is flat to the north but hilly to the south, as these are forested sand dunes. There are approximately a million trees on the property, densely forested with many large "mother trees" such as oaks, beeches, maples, and pines. The poplar trees are growing rapidly, as they do. Wild cherry, sassafras, beeches, oaks, and maples are also growing quickly and thickly.
To the south, there are fenced-in asparagus fields and cherry orchards. To the north, on the other side of Weaver Road, is the privately owned Silver Lake Airport, which remains quiet most of the time. On the east side of our 40 acres, you'll find our cabin and buildings, and we kindly ask you to avoid wandering onto that side of the property. Signs will alert you when you get close.
To the west, there is a 20-acre section occasionally occupied by some "Dunners." The area is famous for Silver Lake State Park and the sand dunes, located about 2.5 miles northwest of us. Our neighbors in that area have dune buggies, and they sometimes drive around their property, creating more noise than we prefer. It's possible that you may encounter this during your visit, so please be aware.
Deer are abundant in the area, and in 2021, we spotted a porcupine for the first time, although we have occasionally seen evidence of their presence through bark-stripped maples. Raccoons come and go, while turkeys are frequent visitors at times. You can hear coyotes yipping away at night, and depending on the time of year and migratory season, you'll see lots and lots of birds.
We're pleased to report that there is no poison ivy on the property!
It is a beautiful place in the woods, not far from many entertaining activities suitable for both the young and old. Come and visit, but please be respectful of the land and our privacy while enjoying yours.

Come camp beneath the trees at Soul Fire Forest, our 8-acre permaculture homestead and growing intentional community in Montague, Michigan.
This isn’t a conventional campground. Soul Fire Forest is a living, working place where we’re experimenting with what a more connected, land-based way of life can look like. We grow food, tend the woods, make biochar, practice natural building and old skills, host workshops and gatherings, raise kids, and slowly build community together.
Our campsites are tucked into the woods along a quiet forest camping area. Guests often tell us the sites feel very private, especially once you’re back in the woods, though we can’t guarantee complete seclusion. You may occasionally see or hear other campers or residents.
All campsites are walk-in. Vehicles cannot be driven to the campsites. You’ll park in the designated parking area and carry your gear into the woods. The walk varies depending on which site you choose. We keep a wagon available for campers to use for hauling gear to and from the sites.
Campsites are currently first come, first served, so you’ll choose from the available sites when you arrive rather than reserving one specific campsite.
Because the campsites are in the woods, open fires are not allowed at individual campsites. Campers are welcome to use our shared community fire pit outside the woods when fire conditions allow. Residents or other campers may be there at times, so it can become a nice little gathering place.
Please bring your own firewood. We do not provide firewood, and firewood, branches, plants, mushrooms, herbs, or other natural materials may not be collected from the property. Firewood is often available from roadside stands nearby.
We ask guests to enjoy the forest without harvesting from it. Independent foraging is not allowed unless you have specific permission or are participating in one of our workshops. These woods are actively managed for habitat, heating wood, mushroom logs, lumber, biochar, and the long-term health of the forest.
Potable water is available at the house, and campers have access to designated compost toilet facilities. We do not have trash service, so please plan to pack out your trash and recycling. Quiet hours are 9 PM to 9 AM, and pets must be leashed and under control.
Our trails wind through the property, but some connect with trails on neighboring land. Please stay within Soul Fire Forest and do not cross brush barriers marking the property boundary. The woods are real woods, so expect roots, uneven ground, mud, ticks, wildlife, and the occasional bit of forest chaos.
Soul Fire Forest is home as well as a campground. Depending on when you visit, you might see kids playing, ducks wandering around their area, residents working in the gardens, a building project underway, a workshop happening, or people gathering around the community fire.
Other times, the camping area is remarkably quiet and you may hardly see anyone.
We’re about 5 miles from Lake Michigan, 1.4 miles from the Hart-Montague Trail, and close to Montague, Whitehall, the Huron-Manistee National Forests, and plenty of West Michigan adventures.

Dean was a fantastic host who went above and beyond! I wanted to solo camp with my service dog and this spot was a great camp. It was private and yet on a paved road and easy to get to. The set up was nice with plenty of room. I had one large tent and a rug which was helpful. Dean brought home made bread, supplied bug spray, firewood and had water in a large cooler jug. This all made the trip so much easier to manage. There was occasional road noise but it wasn’t a busy road. Last night I woke to a bright light shining at the tent. I would have sworn it was a spotlight, turns out it was the moon just so bright in the dark night sky it lit up the inside of my tent! Swam in the nearby swimming hole in the river which was manageable with swim shoes. The weather was very hot and muggy but the river water was almost cold and completely refreshing. My dog had the best time off leash! Dean directed me to nearby Dublin general store. I wasn’t prepared. It was ENORMOUS! Grocery store, hardware store, pharmacy, gun shop and famous for having the biggest selection of jerky you could ever imagine! Trails, lakes, forest, river all nearby. Loads of wildlife that talk to you at night. A great place for solo or group camping.

Mark was wonderful in pointing me to points on the Dragon Trail that I hiked. I am definitely planning to return, and maybe even venturing to ride my bike on an easy part of the trail.

We only stayed one night but loved the rustic camping. Sites were large, clean, and equipped with a fire pit and picnic table. Port-a-potties were also very clean. We also loved the hot outdoor shower. Mark was very helpful and quickly responded to my questions.

Jim’s place was the perfect spot for our Michigan getaway! Our campsite was incredibly clean and wonderfully private. Having the Biergarten just a minute’s walk away was a huge bonus—they had a fantastic drink selection, and the food from the food truck was phenomenal. Above all, the genuine kindness and hospitality of the staff made our stay extra special. I would 100% recommend this Hipcamp to anyone, and we will definitely be back!

We were pleasantly surprised how amazing this property was! Our spot was the one that had power and was located at the edge of the wooded area. We explored the trails and found the other campsites tucked way back in the woods, super private and so scenic! There’s a zip line, horseshoes, a shelter with picnic tables and lights, a huge fire pit and all kinds of little surprises here & there (like Bigfoot feet). Bob & Vicki did an outstanding job making this place stand out. We will definitely stay here again!

I enjoyed my time at the Grand Cabin. I especially appreciate the attentiveness of the hosts to provide cold drinking water and FREE firewood! It was amazing to be able to have my well behaved dog off leash as well! Definitely hope to get back again soon!

A great spot, there was no other campers on our side, so it was quiet and peaceful. The outhouse is clean and Jackie has a beautiful flower bed of Dahlias.

5 nights at The 40 Acre Wood
What a cool little spot to stay! Plenty of room for 2 people,A/C came in clutch on hot days, fridge was great for leftovers, coffeemaker, lots of trails to explore, quiet and secluded (didn't hear any neighbors). Super comfy bed. Heard barred owls and whip-poor-wills, saw a porcupine! Made a great base camp for exploring the area.
Only downside was spotty wi-fi, but thats why you come to a place like this, to disconnect!

Easy to find, secluded, private. Fire pit was nice. I like that it was ready to be lit and there was firewood on site. Trash can, full water jug, bug spray and flowers on the picnic table were all a bonus. I would stay again if I am in the area.

2 nights at Dalton Traders Tents RV's Cabins
I’ve stayed at Dalton camp multiple times now. This is the best camp on this app. I’ve been to many other campgrounds and Dalton is the absolute best camp I’ve experienced. It’s clean and safe. Ed makes sure you have everything that you need. The price is great too. Trust me you’ll won’t find another site at that price that has everything that Dalton camps has. You’ll be paying in the $100s for half of what you get with Dalton camp site. It’s beyond affordable for everyday workers like myself. Best sleep I’ve gotten in years too. No city noise. Just the animals and trees sounds in the wind. Perfection!!!

Enjoyed my two-night stay at Bob and Vicki's. The location provides easy access to great biking, hiking in the dunes, and multiple Lake MI access points. The rinse-off/shower was fantastic!

The play ground on the property was a favorite for our kids.

24 ft campervan
Loved camping here. Friendly, flexible hosts, hot shower, quick access via bike to the Dragon Trail, and I relaxed in the evening in the cozy communal patio/bonfire space.
We could hear partying on the water (I think) Fri/Sat evening from the rustic camping area just a heads up. Didn’t bother us.

We loved our stay at Blue Lake Beer Garden! We arrived and the staff was so friendly. Our campsite was in walking distance from the beer garden but far enough away that we couldn't hear other patrons or be disturbed. It was a large campsite and incredibly peaceful. We stopped by to drink some beers after setting up camp and had such a fun time. The Portopotties were so clean, and even flushed! I seriously already want to come back for another camping trip. Hope to return again this fall!

Wonderful place to stay. Beautiful campsite with Gorgeous views of the stars at night. Loved the outside shower. Took a midnight shower while watching the Beautiful night sky. We drove in on two motorcycles and had zero issues getting to our site. I'd definitely stay here again and recommend it to everyone.
