Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers.
Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

Holcomb Valley Ranch invites you to kick back and relax on our private, 400+ acre ranch in the San Bernardino Mountains. Centered around a 100+ acre meadow, filled with horses in summer months and surrounded by thousands of acres of mountainous National Forest.
Just 15 minutes from Big Bear Lake - a large recreational, fresh-water lake for summer swimming, boating, skiing, fishing and other super fun water activities.
The Ranch feels remote and private. Yet is only four miles to the town of Big Bear with shopping and restaurants. Also in close proximity to incredible rock climbing at the Pinnacles, seemingly endless hiking and biking and some pretty epic off-roading 4x4 trails.
Each campsite is approximately one acre, and generously-distanced from neighboring campers. Amenities include its own fire ring with grilling grate and picnic table(s).
The campsites are both cozy enough for 2 or spacious enough for large groups and can easily accommodate a mix of RVs, camper vans and tents.
From June to October the 100+ area open meadow is filled with horses grazing and galloping about (please don't pet or feed!) A four-seasons destination, the Ranch has year-round experiences with warm summers and snowy winters. An excellent basecamp, within close proximity to the lake, ski slopes, Pinnacles, hiking/biking and off-roading trails.
After a day filled with adventure or ultimate relaxation, be sure to enjoy the breath-taking sunsets over the meadow.
The evenings blanket guests with a sea of stars. Toast up some s’mores and warm up some hot-coco over a beautiful, crackling campfire. Remember the s’mores and always follow the “Leave No Trace” principles. There are large trash bins by the entrance.

Please note:
OHV’s are allowed. They count as one of the allowed vehicles per campsite and must adhere to the speed limit (10mph) and remain on established camp roads while on the property. They may not be driven from 8pm to 8am. It is strictly forbidden to ride your vehicles through the forest, meadow or off any established roads on or off property. Please research which of the surrounding forestry roads allow for your vehicle type to be driven on. Campsites on the west side of the meadow (F, G & H sites) are partially accessed by a forestry road that does not allow dirt bikes.
Horses: The horses which may be roaming the meadow during your stay are not property of Holcomb Valley Ranch. When horses are present, guests and their pets are prohibited from entering the meadow. Please do not approach, interact, feed or touch the horses. This is for your safety and the safety of the horses. Do, however, take lots of photos! They make a perfect backdrop:)

Harbison Canyon is surrounded by rocky peaks, with a CREEK! We have multiple species of song birds, owls, hawks, and other wildlife that live in this Riparian Habitat. There is a chorus of frogs throughout the spring nights, and crickets year round!
It's a very short walk to the neighborhood park- equipped with several types of playground equipment and public creek access, a five minute drive to a Crestridge Ecological Reserve or 20 minutes to the entrance of Cuyamaca State Park and Cleveland National Forest.
We have three campsites and a cabin on about an acre of land. If you'd like to hang out on the property, we offer a table and chairs with each campsite to lounge in while enjoying the fresh air and nature. There are also a couple of hammocks available.
In addition, our SHARED amenities include an outdoor kitchen that includes a sink with hot water, 2 mini fridges,(full at times, extra coolers available) coffee maker, a two burner stove, a griddle, a toaster oven, blender, tea kettle, and a few pans, plates, bowls, cups, and utensils. Also here to SHARE is a Propane fire pit and BBQ area. The bathroom now includes a flush toilet, sink and shower. We are continuously making improvements.
Fun Fact:
Harbison Canyon was named after John Stewart Harbison - aka the King of the Bee Keepers. He arrived with over one hundred colonies of bees in 1874 and within 7 years he became the world's largest honey producer!
Today there are just a few bees in the area.

DISCLAIMER: This is quite different from staying in an ordinary hotel. We are really in NATURE here - these are older cottages hand-built by artists in the forest. They are very rustic! It's like living in a mountain village, with other cottages nearby. While we work very hard to keep our places pristine and spotless - if anyone in your group will faint if they see a bug or lizard or little frog inside - then this probably isn't the place for you. Please be very careful booking cottages for someone else - like your parents just arriving from another continent - they might prefer something more conventional.
Some folks describe our places as a luxurious form of camping. We make our cottages very comfortable - they have all the basics - electricity - wifi - most have kitchens, bath or shower and comfy clean beds. But they are not like a hotel with perfect walls and a sterile atmosphere. Please look at all the pictures and read all the reviews. We can't offer refunds just because we don't meet the standards of a normal hotel. Most people are charmed by this idyllic and bohemian lifestyle - but it's not for everyone.

At 10,833 feet in elevation, this is the second highest peak in California. There are two ways to get to the summit. You can hike the whole thing or shave off about 6000 vertical feet by riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Either way, the summit is not to be missed.
For a real challenge try the epic Cactus to Clouds trail. It was rated as one of the hardest day hikes in the world by Backpacking Magazine. Its 21 miles take you skyward through sub-alpine forests, mountain meadows, snow-dusted crags, and gnarled granite. An alpine start is required to avoid the midday heat so be prepared and take plenty of water.
Campers have plenty to choose from. The San Jacinto area offers two drive-in campsites, four hike-in primitive campsites, and adventures for every brand of wilderness craving. If you want to backpack to the summit over a day or two try the Deer Springs Trail. This park has adventures for every brand of wilderness craving.

1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. People that stay with us love our views. The view from our large driveway where you'll be parked faces north where you will see the 3 largest peaks in the region, and at the top of our driveway you can see the ocean and downtown San Diego. The sunsets are unreal! Our guests also love the recommendations. As avid travelers that fell in love with San Diego, we can offer recommendations for the best restaurants for any dietary situation, beaches, breweries, bars, surf spots, distilleries, coffee shops, hikes, or whatever you are into.
When you submit a request or message, please let us know what kind of vehicle you have, especially the length. Please note that if the total length of your vehicle (for those with trailers that includes the length of the truck nad hitch) should be under 33 ft. This is a general guideline since we've found some people with larger vehicles struggle to turn around in our driveway. Also please let us know if you plan to use electricity or water, and add on the electricity since this costs us a lot of money. San Diego Gas and Energy charges the most for energy than anywhere else in the country (our average electricity bill is over $700 per month) so we unfortunately have to pass on some of these costs if you decide to plug in. Wifi and water are free. Last, if you tell us a little about yourself and what you're looking to do in San Diego we can try to make your stay more enjoyable with conversation and recommendations.
A little about us: After spending a few years traveling around the world (mostly in a 20ft converted sprinter campervan) and working remotely, we chose San Diego to settle down and start a family. Our house is a fixer-upper with about an acre of land. We recently added a garden, citrus trees, grill, patio, and plan to add more amenities for campers. We love our home and the land around it, and we hope you do too! We are open to both short-term and long-term stays. We opened our doors to the public in 2014 to help support feeding our animals, bred and rescued, after the Powerhouse Fire almost burned us out. We’ve survived a county quarantine(2018-2019), the COVID Lockdowns (2021-2022), the Lake Fire (2020), and the Hurricane Kay burn scar debris flow and flood (9/11/22), depending on hard work and strong family and community bonds. In addition to camping and educational tours, we host private and community events, grow and sell produce and eggs, hatch and sell chicks, rescue ratites, and support the local bee population (which gives us RAW honey to sell), and are working to open a private U-pick-by-appointment orchard. We are all animal lovers, and conservationists, and try to do our part to ensure our children inherit a healthy and viable world. This is our home where we live, work, love, and play. formally used as a 1950's Boys Scouts of America campsite. Our Mom purchased the family property over 40 years ago, and my siblings and I grew-up with weekend trips exploring and camping on the property.
With love and respect that all that Mother Nature designs be left wild and free, the more than 100 acres is dispersed with groves of old oak trees, mountains are
covered in chaparral and manzanita shrubbery, and seasonal waterfalls, streams, a lake with a dam, dirt roads, and hiking trails. Our family's wish is to share our little bit of heaven on earth property with others who will love it as we do. We are happy to share more about the history of the more than 100 acres when you come up to the property for your next camping adventure.

Catherine is the most amazing host🎊 She was warm, kind, informative and over all amazing! I loved camping here at the Ford Tractor site! Loved the chickens, fur baby and the horses! The stream was to die for! Private and peaceful 🌸🩷🌸

Our stay at Quiet Soledad was great. Catherine always made sure we were comfortable, and the campsite was wonderful. The kids loved playing in the water and collecting rocks. The location is also close to the beach, so we spent all of Saturday there and then came back to our cozy campsite.

Camp Meadow was huge. Despite other campsites on the property, I did not see another person the entire time I was there. As a single female, it was also a little unsettling. But I highly recommend it to others looking for a relaxing time in nature. The only drawbacks, which I wouldn’t call deal-breakers, are that a high-clearance vehicle is needed to get in and out, and it’s wise to have a spare just in case. There is only one way in and one way out, and the outhouse... is exactly that, so prepare for that.

Where do I start? This place was off the charts awesome. The service was top-notch. The views were spectacular. No bugs to speak of. Awesome weather. Killer campsite with power hook ups. The bathrooms and shower were immaculate and functioned really well. Can’t say enough good things and can’t wait to go back.

This is one of the best campgrounds I have ever been to! The views are amazing, the hosts are super helpful. The campsites are spaced out so you feel removed while also having access to facilities. Would highly recommend!

We loved our tent camping experience on Vicki’s land! The view was spectacular, the night sky - incredible, and the weather perfect for the few days we spent there. We were fortunate to have a perfect spot for our camping experience, large enough for our large tent and a site where we could set up our outdoor gear. We had a blow up couch that was really comfortable and if you can bring one with you we would highly recommend it! It made our outdoor experience really comfortable. But of course it isn’t necessary lol. The flush toilets and shower were a bonus, definitely liked that. The land was fun to explore and we will definitely be coming back! Rick was helpful when we had questions, and we were greeted when arrived shown to our campsite, and Solo the camp dog was sweet to have around when we saw him. Definitely recommend this campsite, we felt safe and were comfortable, will be coming back again!

What a cool place to go camping! We were a large group staying for 2 nights to celebrate a 3 year olds birthday. We booked out all the RV/camp spaces.
There was plenty of space for all of our tents and cars to fit. We found a hidden a way space in the trees to hide from the sun during the daytime, and in the mornings and nights we hung out under our canopies.
Occasionally there was some wind, but luckily we had the right equipment and also found cinder blocks laying around that we used.
The bathrooms were well insulated, had lights, and a sink with running water. There was toilet paper, but you may want to bring extra if you run out. The women’s bathroom had a small field mouse in it, and there were droppings, but it didn’t bother us too much.
You will want to bring your own propane to use the fire pit or bbq grill. The bbq is like the types that you might have at someone’s home.
The playground was nice with lots of swings and slides. There was also a play house. Everything was clean and in great condition.
The ostriches were fabulous. You can faintly hear them at night, too. Some of our group did the tour and really enjoyed it.
The owners came by to welcome us and also gave us an ostrich egg as a gift to the birthday boy. We made scrambled egg the next day.
All in all, yes we would come back again. For the beautiful surroundings mountains, the pleasant drive through some winding roads, and a relaxed kid friendly environment.

What a perfect little escape for families with young campers! We wanted our very first tent camping adventure to be as easy and stress-free as possible, and this was exactly the right place.
Nate has truly thought of all the little details that make camping feel comfortable. Forgot your pots and pans? He’s got you covered. Left the dish soap at home? No problem. There were so many thoughtful extras that made us feel right at home and let us focus on making memories instead of worrying about what we forgot.
Our kids absolutely loved the farm tour and spending time with all of the sweet animals. It was easy to see how much care and love Nate and his partner pour into both the farm and every animal that calls it home. That same warmth extends to their guests, too.
If you’re looking for a peaceful, family-friendly place to unplug and introduce little ones to camping, we couldn’t recommend this spot more. We’re already looking forward to coming back!

Our group loved Jurassic Jungle! It is a beautiful spot and felt secluded. We also enjoyed playing with the goats and taking in the view from the observation deck.

Fun spot to camp! Our group had a mix of tents and trailers and our spot (Redtail Rock) was great for both. Lots of fun rocks for the kids to climb on, a picnic table and potable water on site, and a short 1 minute walk to the closest bathroom. About 15 minutes away is the Santa Margarita County Preserve with some freshwater spots to swim in. (don't go to the river trail preserve if you want to go in the water; no swimming allowed there). The host was also super responsive and helpful.
The only complaint was the ants! They got into everything (including our tent) and that was a pain. Not sure if that was just our site or if other sites have the same problem. It didn't ruin the trip for us, but it was enough of a problem that I don't know if we would come back to this spot.

Vicki’s land was exactly as described: gorgeous views, serene, and hidden gem just an hour from SD. The drive up is not at all treacherous as others suggest, AWD not needed just drive slow & avoid the potholes. A lot of care has gone into creating range of experiences from basic camping to luxury stays and all campers have access to some of the nicest, hottest indoor showers I’ve seen at a camp. The deck lookout is truly special and stars were stunning even with the full moon and city lights from below. We camp a LOT and I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a unique campground experience.
Things I wish I knew: the tent sites are assigned on arrival, many are small, exposed, and close together with hearing/seeing other campers at their sites and walking by, loud quad bikes, solo the dog (who is SO sweet though did not have the best recall when he approached our reactive dog while he was eating dinner). Many will love the community created here! For us, there was just a lot of activity (even with only half the sites booked) which takes away from the serenity and peace we hope for in the outdoors.
We’d love to return and trial another site as all have variable views, quality of furniture, and environment (ex. Our site was shaded but only a small table too unstable for food prep vs picnic tables at others, we were also near the pig barn w/ horrible flies from 11-4 pm). We always use our tent but may consider trying the “glamp camp” sites which seem more private!
