Currently we don’t have any creek and pond water on the land. Mild seasonal temperature swings, fresh air, clear evening skies for star gazing, the property is in a valley surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest and it was formally used as a 1950's Boys Scouts of America campsite. Our Mom purchased the family property over 40 years ago, and my siblings and I grew-up with weekend trips exploring and camping on the property. With love and respect that all that Mother Nature designs be left wild and free, the more than 100 acres is dispersed with groves of old oak trees, mountains are covered in chaparral and manzanita shrubbery, and seasonal waterfalls, streams, a lake with a dam, dirt roads, and hiking trails. Our family's wish is to share our little bit of heaven on earth property with others who will love it as we do. We are happy to share more about the history of the more than 100 acres when you come up to the property for your next camping adventure. Our property is located in Descanso, California. Descanso is located east of Alpine and west of Pine Valley. Descanso is a small census-designated place in the Cuyamaca Mountains, within the Mountain Empire area of southeastern San Diego County, California. Elevation: 3,573′ Zip code: 91916

THE AREA: Tucked away under a grove of oak trees, and circled by manzanita trees, sits "Manzanita Cove". A secluded glamping site that contains everything you need, including a private (seasonal pond). This private site is provided with about 1/2 acre of seclusion and equipped with everything needed for an amazing outdoor experience. The total property is about 5 acres, but is shared with our AirBnB: "Julians Red Fox Retreat", which can be booked separately or together with our "Manzanita Cove" glamping site. Because of the shared space, we do limit the number of guests to two, and ask that you be respectful of the space and noise level when booking independently. There are several hammocks around the grounds to relax as well as a few short trails to walk. The property is about a 7 minute drive from downtown Julian and Wynola. WINTER/ SPRING GUESTS: Access to the site is down a bit of a steep dirt road, so we suggest that winter and Spring campers (wet weather) have AWD/4WD or park at the top and walk down. Otherwise is it accessible by most vehicles other parts of the year. Please do not stop on the hill when leaving. You will spin your tires and damage the road.

Learn more about this land: Gorgeous YOME surrounded by trees. What is a YOME, you ask?  It's a wonderful mix of a yurt and a dome and it's beautiful! Find yourself chilling by the pool or taking a nice hot shower after a hike at the lake. This is glamping at it's finest. Fan, light, Outdoor bathroom with hot shower and flush toilet. Grill a delicious meal on the gas BBQ. Put your drinks and food in the full size fridge outside.  wifi throughout property. Please read everything about the space before requesting to book. This is an outdoor private YOME near our pool. Access to pool, BBQ (bring utensils you would bring camping, plates, napkins, towels, etc.  There is a small sink to wash dishes (pleases only liquid down the drain) but we do not supply dishes, so paper/disposable stuff required if you plan on cooking)  The pool, hot tub and outside bathroom is shared with our small family and anyone staying in the Poolside Lounge during the day if people are swimming, so you may meet some new people while staying at our place.  The outdoor bathroom will be shared when other guests are at the pool swimming or hanging out and need to use the toilet, but most likely during the evening hours, it will be all yours, we always try to give a heads up if there will be anyone using the bathroom in the evening.  The pool is shared, we live on the property across an easement and we have other rentals on the property. There is total privacy at the YOME. Everyone who comes to stay is friendly and chill, no drama here and not a party place, just good vibes :) We have a small farm on our property with chickens and loads of rare tropical fruits and veggies and we love to give tours and share with our guests. There are lot's of wineries in Ramona, about 30 minutes east in the mountains, as well as Julian to explore.  Our glamp is great for a weekend destination or just for a rest on your way to another adventure.  Although we love pets (we have a few dogs on the property), we cannot accept guests with pets at this time.  share it with our guests and will be available during your whole stay if you need anything at all.  We are just a text away and we live on the property and are often down gardening, working, swimming, etc.

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park camping guide

Overview

About

Strap on those hiking boots—four peaks over 5,000 feet await in San Diego's backyard at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. With granite hills, oak woodland forests, waterfalls, and lovely meadows, this 24,700-acre park offers a nice alpine break from SoCal’s deserts and beaches. Hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders can explore over 100 miles of trails, including a summit trail to the 6,512-foot Cuyamaca Peak. Boating and fishing on Lake Cuyamaca are other popular pastimes at Cuyamaca, a popular camping destination offering sites for tents, RVs, and cabin campers. Part of the greater Cleveland National Forest, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park borders Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Notable campgrounds

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. All Cuyamaca Rancho campsites are reservable 6 months in advance online or by calling 1-800-444-7275.
  2. Sites may book out on weekends during spring, summer, and fall, so reserve ahead.
  3. If you have trouble finding a site, expand your search into the surrounding Cleveland National Forest.

When to go

Thanks to its elevation, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park’s mild summers offer a reprieve from sweltering SoCal temps. Summer highs are generally in the mid-80s, while winter lows in the 30s can bring snow and locals for sledding and snowshoeing. Spring is the best time to come for waterfall viewing.

Know before you go

  • Lake Cuyamaca has a restaurant, store, and tackle shop. Boat and kayak rentals are available.
  • Wildlife watching is popular—keep an eye peeled for woodpeckers, red tail hawks, Pacific tree frogs, rattlesnakes, foxes, bobcats, and mountain lions.
  • Although Cuyamaca Rancho State Park has cooler temps than other SoCal areas in lower elevations, the sun is strong and it’s important to bring sun protection and hydrate.
  • Most park campsites are pet-friendly and feature picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and shower access. Individual campsites do not have RV hookups, but dump stations are available.
  • Double-check road and trail conditions before winter trips, as snowfall is possible. The park’s rangers can be reached at (760) 765-3020.
