About Welcome to DragonflyHill Desert Farm & Wildlife Habitat where you can experience desert magic, starry skies, and natural mineral water from our private well. Remote enough for a quiet retreat yet easy to get to and only a short drive to amenities and outdoor adventures! Please review our rules and read our entire listing description prior to requesting to stay here, to assure we’re the right space for you. Copies of our rules, registration documents, liability waiver and amenities are provided in our photos. Guests must agree to adhere to our rules and honor our cancellation policy to book with us. If you have any questions, please make an inquiry and we will get back to you very quickly. We really do love this work. LOCATION: We are located one mile down a well maintained and navigable dirt road, 20 minutes to Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs and Palm Desert, and 15 minutes to the 10 freeway. We're near the Cabazon outlets, 2 hours to Los Angeles, San Diego, Disneyland, mountain areas, and beaches. Nearby there are local wildlife preserves, hiking and outdoor activities. We are 45 minutes to Joshua Tree and a half hour to Coachella. We truly are in the middle of nowhere and the center of everything. For folks traveling in winter, we’re considerably warmer than Joshua Tree and the High Desert. In summer we are cooler than Palm Springs. Immediate neighbors are small farmers and ranchers. Local spas and resorts are available for day use and access to their pools and ponds for as little as $10 a day ($5 seniors). We can provide space for events and entertainment for a small fee. ARRIVAL: Upon approving your reservation we'll send you a welcome message with information we need prior to your arrival to process your reservation, prepare for your arrival and provide you with check in information and accurate directions as gps apps to our location are often wrong. Please answer that initial email as soon as possible. We'll follow up with check in information and driving directions. Once in the gate, stay on the driveway and meet us on the patio with the blue shade sails. We will provide you with an approximately 15 minute orientation and tour, register you, check identification and show you to your campsite. Guests are required to fill out a liability waiver and a simple registration form. (See photos for copies of these forms.) OUR SPACE: Our land is 130 feet wide by an eighth of a mile deep in a residential neighborhood with lots 2.5-10 acres. We can see and hear our neighbors. We maintain a very quiet space but occasionally our neighbors have their own activities and events. Let us know if the neighborhood gets too noisy and we'll try to mitigate those situations. We can also provide free earplugs for those very rare occasions. Guests wanting a totally isolated experience may want to book elsewhere. DragonflyHill Desert Farm is a working farm in a wilderness area. Guests should check weather forecasts prior to arrival and assure that they have the right equipment. We have a moderate cancellation policy that allows guests to cancel 3 days prior to their arrival date to receive a refund. This allows enough time to check weather reports. There are occasional heavy rains and frequent high winds. It can get very hot in summer and reach freezing temperatures in winter. Despite our proximity to the freeway and nearby cities, and our location in a residential neighborhood, this is very much a wilderness area. DragonflyHill is not responsible for the weather. We are not a resort. Expect dry plants and patches during summer and into the fall. As a farm, we may be a bit more rustic than your typical farm to allow for shelter for local wildlife. Our cultivation methods encourage biodiversity and though we are growing food, many of our crops resemble landscaping or natural habitat rather than garden patches. Currently we have habitat viewing areas, an herb garden, an orchard, an outdoor classroom, a sheltered social distancing patio, an outdoor kitchen, meditation gardens, our (seasonal) mineral pool, community library, game boards and toys, and a tree bath. Plant varieties, wildlife and presentation may vary by season. Our farm specializes in herbs, fruit trees, desert and native plants, and edible flowers. We also grow some sprouts and microgreens indoors. We cultivate community and share what we grow with our neighbors and our guests. Guests have shared access to the outdoor kitchen and BBQ area, the orchards, gardens, patios, and grounds of the Desert Farm and Wildlife Habitat, and (for safety reasons) limited access to the pool pond and spa -both unheated. The pool pond is filled with local mineral water from our own well. The pool pond is cleaned regularly & is chlorinated. The pool pond is not cleaned daily and is shared with wildlife. including bees and birds who drink water pool side. Debris from high winds and wildlife may contribute to the pool pond environment. Currently neither the pool pond nor the spa is heated. We also have wheelchair accessible hot water outdoor showers and wheelchair accessible porta potties. The pool area is accessible to guests year round but the pool itself is winterized and unavailable from mid October through mid to late April. We work hard to keep the home well maintained & clean; we're vigilant & do due diligence with professional quarterly visits from Truly Nolen 4 Season Pest Prevention (a green company.) We doubt you'll see any unwanted critters inside or near the house or other structures during your stay, but if you do, please advise us & we will promptly address the situation. DragonflyHill Desert Farm and Wildlife Habitat is in a remote area of the desert with lots of wildlife. To help us keep wildlife OUT of the house and campsites, please keep food out of reach of critters & clean up after every meal. We affirmatively welcome children, but as this is a working farm in a wilderness area, parents will need to be vigilant of their child's safety and activity while here. We are constantly adding activities and features for children and adults. We are child friendly and we are a good location for groups. (Just message us with your details and we can tailor your stay to meet your needs.) We have 1 cat and 1 service dog. Other guests may have pets or assistance animals. Neighbors have chickens, farm animals and pets. There are a few feral cats in the vicinity as well as a variety of desert wildlife. At night you can hear the coyotes though we’ve never seen them or their tracks on our land. Common sightings of road runners, rabbits, hares, lizards, snakes, hawks, doves, desert wrens, migrating ducks (in the Spring), scorpions, mantises, crickets, mockingbirds, insects and spiders. WHO WE ARE: DragonflyHill is a community of artisans, activists, craftspeople and farmers, working together to cultivate community, develop methodologies for living and working together in ever increasing paradigms of social justice and sustainability. We are a safe and sober space that is disability and LGBTQIA affirmative, anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-imperialist and de-colonialist, because anything else is just a bandaid. Core values of our work include attention to detail, fine craftwork and cultivating community. Some members of the Dragonfly Team live on the premises at all times and will be here for the duration of your stay. The rest of the team are community members. All Team members work at DragonflyHill Desert Farm and Wildlife Habitat in different capacities, in cooperation and collaboration with each other. It should be noted that we are not a museum community and our collective is not on display. Only 2-3 members of the community are currently responsible for hosting guests. Community members are autonomous and, much of our community functions virtually. There are also occasional community events at the farm, including farming, though many activities are just coming back after the pandemic. We hope to offer activities in the Fall. All activities will continue to be held outdoors and social distancing is required. We speak: English and Spanish. We can communicate somewhat in French, Italian and Portuguese. DRAGONFLYHILL CONSEIRGE We love to hear about your travels and share our knowledge of our community and Southern California with our guests. Our library, located on the Blue Patio, offers children’s books, local history including indigenous history, farming and gardening, wildlife guides, hiking trails, entertainment and tourist attractions. We can recommend activities on and off site including places to go with children, local hiking, museums, restaurants and shopping. In addition to campsites, for additional fees, we offer reiki, a private jacuzzi hot water mineral bath, farm tours, firewood, tutoring, tax preparation, vehicle storage, event and space rental, and classes. Three of us are licensed to officiate weddings. RULES, DOCUMENTS & AMENITIES Carefully read our listing description and our rules to determine if we're the right space for you. We know we have excellent reviews but take the time to assure that we offer what you are looking for. Each Hipcamp host is autonomous and has their own rules, amenities and features. You can hike the whole thing or shave off about 6000 vertical feet by riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Either way, the summit is not to be missed. For a real challenge try the epic Cactus to Clouds trail. It was rated as one of the hardest day hikes in the world by Backpacking Magazine. Its 21 miles take you skyward through sub-alpine forests, mountain meadows, snow-dusted crags, and gnarled granite. An alpine start is required to avoid the midday heat so be prepared and take plenty of water. Campers have plenty to choose from. The San Jacinto area offers two drive-in campsites, four hike-in primitive campsites, and adventures for every brand of wilderness craving. The result is a natural landscape of orgone generating dirt. You can feel the energy here. There are plenty of dirt roads around the property for casual strolls and mountain biking... or take a short climb up the sandy incline at the back of the property and panoramic views of Joshua Tree await. This listing is not for the inexperienced camper! Please pack in, pack out all your trash and leave no trace besides footsteps. You will have access to a 12 foot (!!) handcrafted solid wood picnic table, handmade stone fire ring and brand new 24x12 foot wooden deck. VERY IMPORTANT: You must have a self-contained toilet system. Please pack out all your own waste. You will also need to bring your own WATER. Thank you!  4-wheel drive highly recommended but regular cars, RVs, Airstreams have previously gotten to PRIVATE 40 by taking it slow and easy with extra care. LOCATION: We are located one mile down a well maintained and navigable dirt road, 20 minutes to Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs and Palm Desert, and 15 minutes to the 10 freeway. We're near the Cabazon outlets, 2 hours to Los Angeles, San Diego, Disneyland, mountain areas, and beaches. Nearby there are local wildlife preserves, hiking and outdoor activities. We are 45 minutes to Joshua Tree and a half hour to Coachella. We truly are in the middle of nowhere and the center of everything. For folks traveling in winter, we’re considerably warmer than Joshua Tree and the High Desert. In summer we are cooler than Palm Springs. Immediate neighbors are small farmers and ranchers. Local spas and resorts are available for day use and access to their pools and ponds for as little as $10 a day ($5 seniors). We can provide space for events and entertainment for a small fee. ARRIVAL: Upon approving your reservation we'll send you a welcome message with information we need prior to your arrival to process your reservation, prepare for your arrival and provide you with check in information and accurate directions as gps apps to our location are often wrong. Please answer that initial email as soon as possible. We'll follow up with check in information and driving directions. Once in the gate, stay on the driveway and meet us on the patio with the blue shade sails. We will provide you with an approximately 15 minute orientation and tour, register you, check identification and show you to your campsite. Guests are required to fill out a liability waiver and a simple registration form. (See photos for copies of these forms.) OUR SPACE: Our land is 130 feet wide by an eighth of a mile deep in a residential neighborhood with lots 2.5-10 acres. We can see and hear our neighbors. We maintain a very quiet space but occasionally our neighbors have their own activities and events. Let us know if the neighborhood gets too noisy and we'll try to mitigate those situations. We can also provide free earplugs for those very rare occasions. Guests wanting a totally isolated experience may want to book elsewhere. DragonflyHill Desert Farm is a working farm in a wilderness area. Guests should check weather forecasts prior to arrival and assure that they have the right equipment. We have a moderate cancellation policy that allows guests to cancel 3 days prior to their arrival date to receive a refund. This allows enough time to check weather reports. There are occasional heavy rains and frequent high winds. It can get very hot in summer and reach freezing temperatures in winter. Despite our proximity to the freeway and nearby cities, and our location in a residential neighborhood, this is very much a wilderness area. DragonflyHill is not responsible for the weather. We are not a resort. Expect dry plants and patches during summer and into the fall. As a farm, we may be a bit more rustic than your typical farm to allow for shelter for local wildlife. Our cultivation methods encourage biodiversity and though we are growing food, many of our crops resemble landscaping or natural habitat rather than garden patches. Currently we have habitat viewing areas, an herb garden, an orchard, an outdoor classroom, a sheltered social distancing patio, an outdoor kitchen, meditation gardens, our (seasonal) mineral pool, community library, game boards and toys, and a tree bath. Plant varieties, wildlife and presentation may vary by season. Our farm specializes in herbs, fruit trees, desert and native plants, and edible flowers. We also grow some sprouts and microgreens indoors. We cultivate community and share what we grow with our neighbors and our guests. Guests have shared access to the outdoor kitchen and BBQ area, the orchards, gardens, patios, and grounds of the Desert Farm and Wildlife Habitat, and (for safety reasons) limited access to the pool pond and spa -both unheated. The pool pond is filled with local mineral water from our own well. The pool pond is cleaned regularly & is chlorinated. The pool pond is not cleaned daily and is shared with wildlife. including bees and birds who drink water pool side. Debris from high winds and wildlife may contribute to the pool pond environment. Currently neither the pool pond nor the spa is heated. We also have wheelchair accessible hot water outdoor showers and wheelchair accessible porta potties. The pool area is accessible to guests year round but the pool itself is winterized and unavailable from mid October through mid to late April. We work hard to keep the home well maintained & clean; we're vigilant & do due diligence with professional quarterly visits from Truly Nolen 4 Season Pest Prevention (a green company.) We doubt you'll see any unwanted critters inside or near the house or other structures during your stay, but if you do, please advise us & we will promptly address the situation. DragonflyHill Desert Farm and Wildlife Habitat is in a remote area of the desert with lots of wildlife. To help us keep wildlife OUT of the house and campsites, please keep food out of reach of critters & clean up after every meal. We affirmatively welcome children, but as this is a working farm in a wilderness area, parents will need to be vigilant of their child's safety and activity while here. We are constantly adding activities and features for children and adults. We are child friendly and we are a good location for groups. (Just message us with your details and we can tailor your stay to meet your needs.) We have 1 cat and 1 service dog. Other guests may have pets or assistance animals. Neighbors have chickens, farm animals and pets. There are a few feral cats in the vicinity as well as a variety of desert wildlife. At night you can hear the coyotes though we’ve never seen them or their tracks on our land. Common sightings of road runners, rabbits, hares, lizards, snakes, hawks, doves, desert wrens, migrating ducks (in the Spring), scorpions, mantises, crickets, mockingbirds, insects and spiders. WHO WE ARE: DragonflyHill is a community of artisans, activists, craftspeople and farmers, working together to cultivate community, develop methodologies for living and working together in ever increasing paradigms of social justice and sustainability. We are a safe and sober space that is disability and LGBTQIA affirmative, anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-imperialist and de-colonialist, because anything else is just a bandaid. Core values of our work include attention to detail, fine craftwork and cultivating community. At 10,833 feet in elevation, this is the second highest peak in California. There are two ways to get to the summit. You can hike the whole thing or shave off about 6000 vertical feet by riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Either way, the summit is not to be missed. For a real challenge try the epic Cactus to Clouds trail. It was rated as one of the hardest day hikes in the world by Backpacking Magazine. Its 21 miles take you skyward through sub-alpine forests, mountain meadows, snow-dusted crags, and gnarled granite. We'd LOVE to host you, but we just find being upfront about this property is best for all of us. NO TOILETS, NO WATER, NO ELECTRIC.... just YOU in all your magnificence, a beautiful wooden deck, a stone fire place, large wooden picnic table and maybe your family, friends and doggie pals. Mar and I visited 44 properties when deciding on land to buy in Joshua Tree in 2020. This one was hands down the most beautiful. We love the mixture of privacy, access to magnificent hiking and wildlife interactions... all while remaining with good cell coverage and close to downtown JT and the national park! Learn more about this land: Primitive camping at the base of Copper Mountain in Joshua Tree, California. Total Seclusion: Private 40 acres wilderness camping and/or event space. YOU ARE RENTING THE ENTIRE PROPERTY. OFF-LEASH ANIMAL FRIENDLY! We love your animal companions and understand they are family. They do not need to be leashed on our property... they can roam FREE! (Just please pick up after them so we can keep this policy in place!) If you want privacy, this is your (very large) spot. You will have 40 acres to enjoy. Bordering the 40 acres, our “neighbors” are three large empty lots and government land with no structures. We are located at the base of Copper Mountain.  The soil here is very special. It has a magical mixture of inorganic materials, like crystals and metals, that have eroded down from Copper Mountain, mixed in a matrix of organic material, like grasses that have been made into a fine powder. The result is a natural landscape of orgone generating dirt. You can feel the energy here. There are plenty of dirt roads around the property for casual strolls and mountain biking... or take a short climb up the sandy incline at the back of the property and panoramic views of Joshua Tree await. This listing is not for the inexperienced camper! Please pack in, pack out all your trash and leave no trace besides footsteps. You will have access to a 12 foot (!!) handcrafted solid wood picnic table, handmade stone fire ring and brand new 24x12 foot wooden deck. VERY IMPORTANT: You must have a self-contained toilet system. Please pack out all your own waste. You will also need to bring your own WATER. Thank you!  4-wheel drive highly recommended but regular cars, RVs, Airstreams have previously gotten to PRIVATE 40 by taking it slow and easy with extra care. If you do get stuck (it NEVER happened before, but just in case)... you will need to call your own towing company. So please be mindful and understand your vehicle's limits. Wake at dawn to see the jackrabbits and listen to the coyotes howl as you fall asleep. Baby quail all in a line may entertain you. The starry nights are glorious here with clear skies most of the time and a lot less light pollution in the desert compared to the cities. Also, we have no surrounding street lamps! Most will find they have good cell service at our location. #NoPowerLines at our property makes for a real wilderness feel, even though we are very close to nearby points of interest. We are VERY centrally located for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding areas.  Distances from PRIVATE 40 Acre Camp by car:  Rt. 62: 8 minute drive Downtown Joshua Tree/Saturday Farmers Market: 11 minutes Joshua Tree National Park (Joshua Tree entrance): 19 mins Downtown Twentynine Palms: 18 mins Joshua Tree National Park (Twentynine Palms entrance): 23 mins Indian Cove: 16 mins PioneerTown: 29 mins Remember, this is the desert and conditions change rapidly. When you park your vehicle, we recommend using it as a wind break when possible. Noise disclosures: sometimes, especially on weekends, you may hear music and party noise from the nearby Bureau of Land Management lands. If you're into golf, you can enjoy Temecula's 7 PGA golf courses or Pechanga Casino which are also within a short driving distance to the farm. If horses or golf isn't your thing, you can visit Temecula Valley wineries which are all ~ 1/2-3.8 miles of the cottage gates. Tammy and Miss Piggy were super friendly. Tammy's response time was quick and communication was clear. Miss Piggy was adorable and did not mind my rowdy dogs. I was mostly climbing in the park so I was only at the campground at night. I love the tranquility of the campground, and the ability to gaze the stars at night. Albeit camping alone, I felt very safe staying at Simply Duke :)

My family had a great time camping here. It was awesome being secluded and having so much space to ourselves, but nice to be close enough to town if we needed any supplies. There are others camping in the distance on BLM land and you can hear people riding ATV’s in the background, but it was not a bother at all. Having the deck was really nice, as well as the picnic table. We also made good use of the fireplace. We will definitely come back.

The hosts were super friendly! AND there was drinking water, flush toilets, and showers! Those were the best assets. And having a Family Dollar a block away was convenient. On the down side, we were right next to a community park with bright lights. Plus the regular noise from being in a city, but that is not Josh’s fault. All in all, we had a very pleasant stay!

Everything as described, nice isolation from the city with good enough space to enjoy. There was some miscommunication here and there due to the busy day since it was a holiday. However Tammy's attempt later on to sort things out for us was more than enough to overcome the miscommunication. She is a lovely host and me and my friends still had one of the best nights out. One thing to note is although it is definitely 2WD capable, the route it quite long and bit rough (I took my vw golf). Overall great stay, thanks again Tammy!

This is our first Hipcamp experience and it was a pleasantly unique one. We were greeted by the sweetest pack of dogs and our sites were clean and easy to find. Our group of 12 booked sites 3 & 4 to be close together. The hot shower & toilets were just a few mins away fr our sites. The camp hosts, Joel & Jessica, were very helpful and showed us around. The owner, Sean, communicated thru the website and answered all my questions in a timely manner. The kids (ages 6-17) loved visiting all the animals: feeding the goats, holding the kitties in the cathouse, petting the calm big dogs, hiking on the trails, playing at the obstacle course, & they really loved the zip line. There are trails on the property ranging fr easy to difficult. On our night walk to stargaze, there is a beautiful view fr the Hilltop site. Having the dogs around left a big impression as we’ve never had guard dogs at a campsite before. Even though there were times (late in the night) where there was a stretch of barking at something in the hills, it felt very comforting to know they were out there doing their job. It was interesting to hear them communicating to each other from end to end of the property and it was actually not a bother for any of us. It became almost like white noise to fall asleep to. We felt honored to have most of them hang out with us and at the end of the trip we were all saying “We miss the dogs!” So we definitely look forward to coming back and we recommend this place for families.

We loved the serenity at Tammy's camp. We arrived after it had gotten dark and Tammy was very prompt and helpful, via messaging, in getting us to the right location within the campground. It's a long trek out there by sandy dirt roads but it was well worth the effort to get away from the crowds of Joshua Tree NP. We're not real big desert fans but to be out on that open land, feeling one with nature, witnessing the most gorgeous pink sunsets lighting up the distant mountains, we came away with a new appreciation for the desert world.

The private campsite had a clean bathroom, and the host was very thoughtful and kind with their messages. We really liked the setup overall. But after around 9–10 PM, there were so many dog noises that it became really hard to get my little girls to sleep in the tent. At one point we almost packed up and left, because we kept hearing 10–15 different sounds and we honestly couldn’t tell if they were dogs, coyotes, or something else. It felt like they might come close to the tent, and that really scared us. We also noticed what looked like dog urine around the site. We’re not pet owners, so that was uncomfortable for us. It could have been from wild coyotes, so I don’t want to blame the host, but the nonstop dog/coyote noises went on for hours and we couldn’t sleep. There were also a lot of motorcycles in the area, and some were riding even late at night. We left the campsite cleaner than we found it, but unfortunately, because of the nighttime dog/coyote noises, we don’t think we would return.

Anson and I continue to build everything ourselves with the help of our friends and family every now and again. Our process is that we source as much lumber using the dead Eucalyptus trees we have here on the 36 acre property and we are constantly trying to come up with innovative ways to use recycled and donated materials in the venue. During the pandemic, we turned our venue into a campground so we could open up the venue to people who needed to get out into nature. We are now open for daily camping and private events. NO SMOKING: No smoking or burning candles. This is a non-smoking home and dome. Any and all smoking should be kept outdoors at least 15 feet away from any exterior doors and dome. There will be a $250 charge for anyone not honoring this guideline. DEPOSIT OR WAIVER: Our bookings are protected by SUPERHOG, our trust and safety partner. Guests must verify themselves through SUPERHOG after the booking is confirmed, which only takes less than a minute and is required prior to arrival. Guests will be asked to put down a refundable $500 deposit (minus a $15 processing fee) or a non-refundable $35 damage waiver that covers any damage up to $500. Guests will be contacted directly by SUPERHOG via text with a URL link to start the verification process. CHECK-IN /CHECK-OUT: Saturday check-ins and check-outs are not allowed. We may grant an exception to this for last-minute reservations. LACK OF CELLULAR COVERAGE: You will notice that cell service is hard to come by in our secluded desert setting.
