Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
Splitrock Farm
Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers.
Splitrock Retreat
Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 200 foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

Nopalito Farm has been in operation since late 2014, but the property itself has been a working farm for over 50 years. Lemons and avocados were the primary crops from the 70’s through the 00’s, and are still prominent throughout our 15 acres. Our predecessors then diversified the growing operation by planting a wide range of fruit trees ranging from guavas and passion fruit to peaches and figs. For a decade, hops were grown on 2 acres and were sold to breweries throughout southern California. We’ve since replaced the hop yard with perennial flowers, but continue to cultivate a wide variety of delicious fruits.

Bailes Farm

One of the last remaining undeveloped parts of Southern California, De Luz Heights is located adjacent to the Cleveland National Forest, and the Santa Margarita River (just a few miles from the campsite). This 12-month flowing river is the only one in Southern California that has never been altered or dammed by humans, and features a state-managed hiking trail with many water holes along the way with clear, clean water to dip into. On my 80 acres, there are no major roads going through or next to the property. My land is 13 miles from the Pacific ocean and enjoys a relatively mild yearly climate. Giant boulders provide topographical relief and offer platforms from which to enjoy the view of the nearby Santa Margarita Mountains. The valley views are filled with olive and avocado groves, vineyards, and horse ranches. The Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base is nearby, so you might hear some artillery in the distance on some occasions.
The campsite embraces all the comforts of "glamping": a hot shower, composting toilet, beds with sheets provided, gas grill with a stovetop, pots and pans, kitchenware, a sink, picnic table, shaded deck, sofa, lounge chairs, and propane fire pit. The basics are provided: toilet paper, paper towels, purified drinking water, towels, sheets, cooking oil, etc. Campers need to bring their own blankets. I've created a network of hiking trails for especially fit hikers looking for a more rigorous hike than the nearby Santa Margarita River Trail. My trails lead through creek beds, over boulders, through rocky crags, with views of the Pacific ocean on a clear day. Hikers on my trails need to wear proper hiking boots with good traction. Sections of my trails will require bouldering with hands and feet. Expect to have fatigued quadriceps, some scrapes, and a sweaty hat brim.
The campsite is accessible with a two-wheel drive vehicle; I drive a Kia Forte out there regularly. However, some tips when driving a two-wheel drive car: when going uphill on a dirt road, try to keep some momentum of about 12-15 MPH. If you stop and try to start again, your tires will spin out. If that happens, just reverse down the hill, and try it again with more momentum.

In 1-2 hours, you can also get to Mount Palomar, Julian, Idyllwild, San Diego, Orange County and other destinations.
We offer a camping spot large enough for your own trailer, RV or tents next to our barn. You can also select the add-on for our trailer to be set up and ready for your arrival (this option will appear at checkout). There is an outdoor shower and rustic water closet, as well as water and electric hookups. Please see the site descriptions or inquire for any additional details.
Traveling with horses? They have room to stay in our Horsetel too! We have up to 5 stalls available in a covered barn, complete with automatic waterers, feeding mats, wash rack, round pen and fenced pasture. Any horses staying must be in good health and up to date on all vaccines. We can arrange for a trail guide to take you and your horses on the local trails, as well (trails are advanced terrain).
**When reserving stalls for your horses, select only one guest for the sites to show as available. Horse stalls may not be booked without owners booking the campsite for the same duration. Boarding is not available.

The Airstream is new to the ranch and is a work in progress, but you'll love the charm of hanging out in a very cool vintage trailer. We'll soon be adding some layers of paint, shine, and lots of love, so make sure to follow our progress in fixing the ole girl up!
Our location is also unique because we are fully fenced in and have a separate turn out space for your horses (check add-ons for camping with your horse). We also have a small 1954 Camper ("Lucy") that can act as a second bedroom for more sleeping space (check for add-on).

Inside, you won’t believe you’re in a camper. Renovated in 2019 this Comfy+Cozy Camper is exactly that. The sleeping areas have blackout blinds as well as the kitchen window. Cozy up in the queen bed on a 3” mattress topper next to double sconces; perfect for a night read, or cuddle up and watch some TV.
The bunkroom has its own door for privacy, separate sitting area with table, sleeps 3 with a 200lb max weight limit for both top bunks. Inside the bunkroom I've provided fun coloring books with colored pencils, books and walki talkies. If you need a pack-n-play, please let me know! This space is perfect size for kids 10 and under, though adults have squeezed in!
Nearby the Camper sits our chicken coop, each stay you’ll be provided a fresh eggs & you’re welcome to grab more from the coop and say hi!

During your stay at the Hillside Hideaway Retreat we offer your choice between staying in one of our two stylish RVs or a chic tiny home nestled in the hillside of east county of San Diego, each with their own personality and flair! El Cajon is a central area that allows quick access to the city but just enough distance from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Both RVs are located next to one another while the tiny home is located on the same property a short hop and a skip away from the RVs (approximately 55 feet), allowing you to socialize throughout your stay but allows some privacy if needed.
DARLING DAISY:
Our retro RV Darling Daisy offers guests with a retro experience that allows you to glamp in 1950s inspired style. This retro style camper sleeps 4 people and comes equipped with a spacious kitchenette that has a fridge, stove, and microwave with a diner style booth to dine with your guests. The big screen smart TVs can be found in the kitchen and above the comfortable queen bed that is separated from common areas by a wall. Sleep other two guests in the cozy bunk beds in the corner of the camper. Miss Daisy has her own firepit perfect for roasting marshmallows.
RETRO BETTIE HILLSIDE HIDEAWAY:
Retro Bettie Hillside Hideaway is located next to Darling Daisy. Bettie has an ultra-comfortable Queen walk-around bed sleeps two, and the kitchen table converts into a compact twin-size fold-out bed that can sleep one small adult or two small children. Miss Bettie is fully equipped with a dining area, a bathroom, and a VERY SMALL shower and bathroom, as well as a refrigerator and freezer, with a smart TV.
RV FEATURES:
The kitchenettes in both RVs are stocked with a coffee maker that brews with pods, a microwave, a toaster oven, and basic kitchen needs like cups, plates, a wine opener, and silverware. In the bathroom, we provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash as well as hand soap and a starter pack of paper towels in the kitchen (guests are responsible for additional paper towels for stays exceeding 5 days). We also provide bath towels and RV toilet paper that is made specifically for our RV plumbing system.
BIRDIE'S BUNGALOW:
Birdie is a darling, 175-square-foot studio designed with modern, stylish décor focusing on comfort and fun in the sun! It’s the perfect spot for two people and a pup! Birdie has a very comfy, brand-new leather sofa and a small dining or work area. Relax in bed or on the sofa while you watch Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu on the 55” flat-screen Smart LG TV. Find your perfect temperature with our built-in split unit AC and heater combo. The kitchen area is equipped with a microwave, toaster oven, hot plate, and Keurig coffee maker. We do not have a stove or an oven. We provide a smaller 4.5 cubic feet fridge to save space and there is no dishwasher, but we provide hand soap, dish soap, and drying rack for your convenience. The space features a private, compact bathroom featuring a shower, toilet, and modern hand-washing station. The full-sized bed area offers a brand-new, ultra-comfortable mattress.

Overview
For an unforgettable camping trip in southern California, take a drive to La Jolla in San Diego County. Sandy shores and coastal adventures await at La Jolla Underwater Park in its underwater caverns. Or, relax at Silver Strand State Beach, which features beachside RV and tent camping, as well as showers and picnic tables. Surfing and kiteboarding are also popular here. Further inland, ascend the peak of Palomar Mountain State Park, go inner tubing down San Luis Rey River, or take a zipline tour at La Jolla Adventure Park. Then, settle back in at nearby campgrounds that are dog-friendly.

Palomar Mountain State Park
Northeast of La Jolla, Palomar Mountain State Park spans over 1,800-acres of pine, fir, and cedar forest. At the southern foothills of Palomar Mountain, La Jolla Indian Campground run by the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians boasts fun river tubing access and exciting zipline tours through Pauma Valley. Or reserve a dog-friendly campsite with flush toilets and pay showers. It fits motorhomes and trailers up to 24 feet in length. Nearby, Lake Henshaw also offers boating, kayaking, and waterfront camping for fishing and boating enthusiasts, including RV sites with full hookups.
Silver Strand State Beach
On a slim sandbar between San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Silver Strand State Beach offers both cooler ocean and warmer bay beaches. Swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing are popular here, as are beach volleyball, surfing, and boogie boarding. The on-site RV campground offers full hookups for motorhomes and travel trailers up to 40 feet in length. Facilities include fire rings for summer cookouts, beach restrooms, and cold showers.
La Jolla Underwater Park
Swimmers, snorkelers, and scuba divers will want to visit La Jolla Underwater Park for day use after they check into a nearby RV park. Swimming through the crystal clear waters, underwater explorers will encounter an abundance of marine life, including leopard sharks and colorful fish among kelp forests. The underwater park extends about three miles up the coast along La Jolla Bay from La Jolla Cove to Scripps Pier.
When to go
With warmer weather up to the mid-80s and longer daylight hours, summertime is popular for camping near La Jolla. Snorkelers and divers who want to swim with leopard sharks may want to visit when the population peaks in July and August. Milder weather in spring and fall can be equally pleasant and less busy for ziplining, tubing, and hiking. Campsites typically offer greater availability during the cooler months as well.
