The best camping in North Stradbroke Island

·

Known as "Straddie" by locals and also increasingly by its Aboriginal name, Minjerribah, this popular holiday spot for Brisbane families is more than 25,000 hectares of wilderness and long beaches. The island vibe is laid-back with an emphasis on nature—think scenic gorges, bushwalking, and wildlife. The three townships—Dunwich, Amity, and Point Lookout—sit about 20 kilometres apart and are linked by sealed roads. Surfers love Point Lookout for the closest surf breaks to Brisbane, while the other side of the island is almost entirely covered by Naree Budjong Djara National Park’s sand dunes, freshwater lakes, wetlands, and heathland. Camping is available within the park, but most other island camping is managed by Minjerribah Camping, including beach camping. For remote beach camping, a 4WD vehicle is needed (along with a vehicle access permit).

Point Lookout, QLD · 1 site
4WD-Only Bush Camping, Right Next to the Beach Paradise awaits with the ultimate ocean-view campsites. Tired of camping right next to other people? Our secluded, private campsites are just a few meters from the beach and the Key Holes lagoons, offering the very best of fresh and salt water in one location. At the moment, only one campsite is open, so you truly will have the place to yourself in an exclusive setting—no one else in sight. There is no infrastructure here, so bring all your camping gear, water, friends, and family, and remember to leave no trace. We are a Traditional Custodian family-run campground that is just getting started. Our aim is to manage and care for Country with a focus on regeneration, conservation, restoration, and weed management, while also providing a beautiful, serene place to camp for visitors to the island. As Traditional Custodians, this is our practice, and in addition, we've over 30 years work experience in conservation and ecosystem management. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of island life surrounded by nature, with all the conveniences of Point Lookout just 10 minutes away. Proceeds from the campground go toward Caring for Country, sustainable livelihoods, continuation of culture, and living on Country. The island is a mosaic of varied habitats, including extensive wetlands, freshwater lakes, mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, wallum heathlands, sclerophyll forests, and surf beaches. A massive freshwater aquifer sits beneath the island’s permeable sands. This unique hydrological feature sustains rare acidic, low-nutrient lakes, such as the perched Brown Lake and the water-table window Blue Lake, as well as spring-fed swamps, which are crucial habitats for specialized and sometimes endemic species. We are situated at the meeting point of temperate and tropical waters, with the surrounding Sea Country hosting exceptional marine biodiversity. This is home to our people, and our family connection stretches back into deep time. Tents, swags, and rooftop tents are welcome. This site is not suitable for caravans or camper trailers. Please watch the tides when accessing our camp; try WillyWeather tides for Point Lookout. Cultural tours, 4WD tours, sandboarding, and spearing can also be arranged—just ask

When submitting a booking request you MUST include the following information: Your vehicle make and model, camping setup (tent/swag/camper trailer/caravan etc), type of toilet and ensuite tent (if booking an Elevated site) and number of occupants (adults, children, dogs). Stonesthrow is a 106 acre rural property in the peaceful Illinbah Valley. Nestled between Beechmont and Canungra, we are about an hour (a stones throw) from the Gold Coast or Brisbane. Over time, the property has been used to farm goats, train racing camels and spell racehorses and is now a family hobby farm. We currently have three dogs, cows, horses, goats and some friendly donkeys who love to meet new people for some pats and a carrot! The Stonesthrow Bush Camping sites are close to the beautiful shallow creek that meanders its way through the property. These sites have access to facilities - toilets, a powered shed, kettle, fridge and a sink. Some sites offer 2WD access yet still facilitate the experience of camping in the bush. THESE ARE THE ONLY SITES THAT CARAVANS CAN ACCESS. The Stonesthrow Elevated sites are located higher up, with stunning views of the valley. These sites are only accessible by capable 4WD and require you to bring your own sealed, chemical camping toilet and ensuite tent which we sight on arrival before allowing guests access to the track. Check-in must be during daylight hours to enable safe access. Off-road camper trailers can access these sites. Friendly dogs are welcome and must be kept on a lead when in close proximity to the cottage and other campers. Please note, the availability of certain sites is weather-dependent. We are not a 4WD adventure park. Vehicles must be left at your campsite and NOT used to explore the property. Exploration of the property is welcome by foot or bicycle: 1.2 km from bottom to top. Due to insurance considerations, no 'day visitors' are allowed unless they have an approved Hipcamp booking. We are a Leave No Trace campground - ensure what you bring in, leaves with you. North Stradbroke Island camping guide

Where to go

The North Gorge Headlands Walk

This walk is not to be missed, as the boardwalk offers stunning views of the gorge, and is a great place for spotting turtles, dolphins, and whales (between May and November).

Naree Budjong Djara National Park walking tracks

Six walking tracks run through the park, five of which start in the car park at Blue Lake (Kaboora), about 9 km from Dunwich. Some tracks have limited shade, so early morning walks are best, especially in summer. The most challenging track is Kabul (carpet snake), which has long steep sections. The Jarlo (fire beetle) track offers views to the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and the Glass House Mountains to the north.

Brown Lake (Lake Bummiera)

Brown Lake is stained by the tannin from the leaves of surrounding tea trees and paperbarks. It is only 3.5 km from Dunwich and a great place for birdwatching and wildflowers, while waterside trails allow you to walk the lake’s perimeter.

Moreton Bay Marine Park

Snorkel or scuba dive with giant manta rays and lazy leopard sharks in Moreton Bay Marine Park on a tour with a local outfitter. At Manta Bommie, off the island’s northeast corner, these amazing creatures are unfazed by swimmers above them. The excursion might also include sightings of turtles, dolphins, and bull sharks.

When to go
