Nestled under the canopy of a beautiful West Coast temperate rainforest in Qualicum Bay, theDoighouse Earthship is a peaceful eco-retreat and the perfect jump-off point for exploring in any direction. Our campsites are mindfully scattered across two acres of our larger woodland property. They are designed to offer a peaceful forest experience—spread out enough that you won't be bothered by neighbouring camping sounds, while still letting you catch a friendly glimpse of tent lights through the trees. 📍 Great Location on Vancouver Island Our spot is ideal for both adventurers and peace-seekers. Use us as your ideal base to explore local trails, visit the iconic ancient giants at Cathedral Grove, and take an inspiring tour of our Earthship before you head further west to explore Tofino or journey up north. Located about an hour north of Nanaimo, we’re a great stopover for guests travelling to or from the mainland. Mount Washington is just a 45-minute drive if skiing is on your itinerary, and we’re also well-positioned for day trips to Hornby, Denman, and Lasqueti Islands. 🥾 Hiking, Beaches, and Outdoor Fun Nearby Explore forest trails, a children’s playground, and a bike park right in our neighbourhood. We have one campsite available for tent campers and car campers in a beautiful forest setting. This site easily fits 2 tents. The tent site is tucked into the forest, surrounded by cedar and douglas fir trees with ample room for your tent(s). NOTE: this site is near the driveway. With a picnic table that seats 6 comfortably. There is an outhouse a 2-minute walk from the campsite. Go for a swim, kayaking, spend the day hiking or simply enjoy a beautiful sunset. Beautiful property, a short drive from "town". Bright stars and quiet. Stayed in the Maple Cabin which was perfect. Short walk to the composting outhouse - remember to bring a head or neck lamp. We weren't there for long so didn't have time to do the tour. Maybe next time

Hands down this is the most unique Hipcamp you will ever visit! Susan and Tony offer a variety of units. Our cabin was spotlessly clean and fully stocked with essentials and featured its own bathroom. We deeply appreciated their focus on sustainability and loved getting to learn about their earthship design. Between hiking and paddleboarding on the nearby lakes, the location has so much to offer. We 💯 recommend their Hipcamp and are already planning a longer return trip!

Maple Cabin
We stayed in the Maple Cabin, nestled beneath a beautiful, large maple tree that provided the perfect amount of shade from the summer sun. The cabin sits right across from Susan’s gorgeous garden, filled with an assortment of plants, flowers, and greenery. Susan was even kind enough to share some freshly picked potatoes with us! The beach is less than a five-minute drive away, where we enjoyed peaceful walks along the shore and the refreshing ocean breeze. The entire property was incredibly peaceful and quiet—the perfect place to slow down and unwind. At night, we were treated to a sky covered in a blanket of stars, which made the experience even more magical. Susan and tony were wonderful host, and we truly enjoyed our stay. 10/10 would recommend the Maple Cabin to anyone looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway!

Such a wonderful experience staying here. The owners were such lovely people, they even allowed us to extend our stay last minute. We stayed in the smaller cabin and it was perfect. Very comfortable bed and very clean. You have a picnic bench and chairs/table outside your door to hang out and enjoy. The star gazing at night was incredible. It was nice and quiet both nights, it felt like we had the place to ourselves! We would absolutely go back again, and likely will next summer!

We stay at both of the cabins for the 4 of us together + a puppy. The place was amazing for us to relax, cook, and explore the area. The kitchen and showers were clean and compact. Susan and Tony were welcoming and friendly to chat with. Sadly, we didn't get to do the tour but I hope that I can come back one day to do it.

I loved it here! Not only was the land gorgeous but Susan and Tony went above and beyond as hosts. Their passion for their home is outstanding. I gushed a lot cause an Earthship is a dream home of mine. Truly, I nerded out. The evening I arrived Susan showed me around and let me pick a bunch of raspberries. She also shared how the dream of an Earthship became a reality. Shortly after setting up Tony came by to talk with the Earthship and set up a tour. We had a wonderful conversation at sunset over a beer about Earthships. It was wonderful. The next morning I had coffee with the two of them and muffins (Susan makes a delicious muffin). Tony gave me a tour of the place and answer my questions before getting to work. Susan showed me her tile work and share some plans she has for the bathroom. The property was close to beautiful beach spots (Thanks Susan for the recommendations!). I enjoyed check out the area and having a safe welcoming place to come back. And trust me, I will be coming back to stay again. Not just for the Earthship and to see how it changes as they do more work, but to see Susan and Tony again.

This was a lovely spot surrounded by forest (mostly). It was very quiet at night and during the day for that matter. I had great sleeps. There is a lovely public walking trail close to the property. You could also walk down to the Sandbar CafĂŠ for breakfast or other meals if you are so inclined although it does close in the evening at 7pm. Susan and Tony are friendly and welcoming hosts.

Absolutely lovely stay & experience
Maple Cabin
We absolutely loved our stay at the lovely little cabin – it was all super comfy, and exactly what we needed. It was great to have the picnic table outside. We set up our propane stove and cooked ourselves some yummy dinner and breakfast. The raspberries were ripe in the garden and super tasty! Absolutely loved the earthship tour – thank you so much Susan and Tony for a wonderful stay and for sharing your home and your passion!
