Both Susan and Tony were amazing hosts. They were always quick to answer any questions and were incredibly kind! We did end up booking a tour with them of their place which was truly spectacular and original. Me and my parter have already discussed when we will return next. We will be forever thinking about our conversations with them both sharing our love for the environment and dogs:) Looking forward to our next visit!

Love the micro-cabin. It is very compact and thoughtfully designed. We enjoyed the firepit and kitchen. Kito was very healpful and even provided us with extra heater. The water in the outdoor shower is very cold so it could be improved. But im sure that Kito will immediately fix it if you message him. We didnt need to use it during that time so it wasnt a problem for us. Overall, it is a nice place and very private. We also enjoyed the trail.

Susan was an excellent host. When we first showed up we were a little lost and she guided us right to our campsite. We were camping on Thanksgiving and she invited us into her home and gave us a slice of homemade pumpkin pie (it was amazing). We left in a hurry but we would definitely go back again.

We had a very cosy stay at the Portal retreat with our pooch. It was pretty rainy but that made the stay even more cosy. The bed was really comfortable , and it’s such a close walk to Sproat lake. We enjoyed swimming and paddling , very peaceful. We hope to be back again soon :)

I loved glamping at the Portal retreat. It was an easy drive to Tofino for a day trip and the lake provided a relaxing alternative to the beach. It was a lovely little cabin and a highlight of my trip!

I would recommend for my low maintenance friends as the pee toilet in the cabin is a separate room with a seat, however is a 20gallon paint bucket that you do have to clean. This didn’t bother me, but may bother some.
I didn’t shower when I stayed because the shower was very dirty and full of garbage from previous guests. The compost toilet is clean and right around the corner from the cabin.
There are workers/helpers/younger (quiet) crew who live on site and are very helpful and wonderful.
I loved staying here and will be back.
My only concern was the lack of cleanliness of the shower. I’ve posted an updated photo.

We loved tent camping on Paul's property, we drove around and looked at every site and ended up picking site 8 for it's privacy and cute little pond area, though we would have been ecstatic with any of the sites as they were all private and tidy. Boyd and Ace (resident campers we ran into) were also very kind and Ace was fun to pet! (He's a dog haha) the ocean was walking distance away which was also very nice. Paul even offered to deliver firewood to us and build us a cozy campfire! Would definitely recommend staying here if you're looking for a secluded, private, clean place to camp. We'll definitely be back next year!

Overview
About
Sprout Lake Provincial Park’s lake, known as Kleh-koot, is a popular vacation spot for swimming, fishing, boating and windsurfing. A short walk on an easy lakeside trail takes you to K’ak’awin, one of the most notable panels of prehistoric petroglyphs in the province. The 64-site campground has water spigots and pit toilets, as well as a shower building, a sandy beach, and picnic areas. The park is located in the territory of the Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for tenting: Five tent-only sites are located in the lower campground in a quiet forested area near the lake.
- Best for barrier-free camping: Wheelchair-accessible sites and facilities are located in the lower campground.
- Best for families: The upper campground has larger spaces, more privacy, and a playground.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Reservations are recommended from mid-May to September and must be booked through the Discover Camping Reservation Service.
- If you’re visiting weekends or holidays (Canada Day, BC Day, or Labour Day) you’ll want to secure a spot as far in advance of your trip as possible.
- You may be able to score one of the limited numbers of first-come, first-served spots, especially mid-week, if you show up right at check-out time at 11am.
- Year-round camping is available in the lower campground, though some facilities may not be available in the off-season.
When to go
Sprout Lake Provincial Park is open for camping year-round. If you’re looking for sunny weather, visit July through mid-September, although this is also the busy season due to the salmon sportfishing season often starting in July. Those seeking a quieter experience will find it less hectic on weekdays when schools are in session, during May, June, and September. The lake is warmest for swimming in August.
Know before you go
- Groups looking for larger camping spaces can try nearby Taylor Arm Provincial Park.
- Canoe and kayak rentals are available from local businesses, and there’s a boat launch and dock in the park.
- Sproat Lake is just 13 kilometres from downtown Port Alberni, making the park a good base for local exploring and hiking.
- Port Alberni is famous for its salmon fishing with anglers fishing for sockeye, coho, and Chinook. Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery is well worth a visit to learn more about the importance of salmon to the region.
