Birch Point Farm

3 sites ¡ Lodging, Tents4 acres ¡ Machiasport, ME
----------------------------------------------------------------- *2024 SUMMER SEASON INFO* - We have a hand-pump on our well that you can use for your fresh water supply 💦 - Our state-of-the-primitive-art out house is available for your use 🌙 tucked into the woods along the path to the overlook and bay beach. - At this time we do not have firewood available for sale. If you plan to make a fire in the fire pit (which is 100% welcome!) please bring wood and kindling with you 🔥 - The walk down to the flat rock beach is erosion-prone. Please be aware of your steps and tread lightly to help us keep the natural moss and ground cover in tact! 🌱 --------------------------------------------------------------- We welcome campers to the beautiful land where we live, a wooded 4 acres on "Birch Point" which juts into the lively salt-water Machias Bay. Your hosts, Lucy and Tyler, are homesteading musicians who love to host seasonal, wholesome, multi-generational parties. We're currently developing a biodynamic community farm and garden project, with our off-grid house still in construction. Mostly wooded with small clearings, this spot is a comfortable and spacious camping environment. There is a common fire pit in view of the ocean, glinting through the trees. Wild animals, like deer and foxes, and many bird species abound, filling the land with life and song. We’re so grateful to live on this piece of paradise, and wish to share the beauty and magic of the land with you! On the bold coast of Downeast Maine, we offer (a) tent sites in a grove of young maple trees, and (b) a canvas bell tent atop a wooden platform with a double-mattress. Both of these options are easily accessible from the parking area. A short saunter through the woods will bring you to an ocean front vista, overlooking a tidal bay fed by the Machias River. These are very refreshing (chilly!) and strong tidal waters. There are also beautiful (warmer) lakes and many hiking trails nearby, notably the Cutler Bold Coast Trail with epic seaside cliffs. Expect the area to be relatively buggy in summer months, and prepare to do head-to-toe tick checks! We’re about a 10 minute drive from the town of Machias where you can fill up on supply and provisioning needs. We're about 30 minutes from Lubec and 50 minutes from Eastport, two lovely seaside towns with art galleries, cafés, restaurants, and abundant coastal view points. We look forward to welcoming you and your close ones soon for a visit on Birch Point :-)

The best camping near Cobscook Bay State Park guide

Overview

About

Surrounded on three sides by the beautiful and serene Cobscook Bay, this far northern park offers visitors a peek into unique ecosystems and wildlife that are not found anywhere else on earth. Cobscook Bay State Park is home to more than 200 species of birds, including the state’s highest concentration of bald eagles. You’ll also discover impressive tidal changes, and a narrow opening to the sea, which is the perfect condition for all kinds of marine wildlife.

Set up camp at one of the well-spaced and secluded campsites and get busy exploring this incredible park. Families will dig the posh amenities, and everyone will enjoy hiking the fabulous trails, exploring the tidal marshes, and digging softshell clams, which will provide you with a supremely local meal that you’ll remember for evermore.

Notable campgrounds

  • Whiting Bay Campsites - These sites offer stunning waterfront views and direct access to the bay's rich waters.
  • Group Camping Areas - Ideal for larger gatherings, these sites accommodate up to 30 campers, perfect for a community adventure.
  • Backcountry Camping - For a more secluded experience, the backcountry sites provide a peaceful retreat in the heart of nature.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early online to secure your preferred spot, especially during peak season.
  • For group camping, call the park directly to reserve one of the two available locations.
  • Consider off-season camping for greater availability and a quieter experience.
  • Explore nearby camping options to ensure you have a backup plan in case the park is fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit Cobscook Bay State Park is during late August and early September to witness the shorebird migration. However, be mindful of the mosquitoes and black flies from late May through July. The park's tranquility and natural beauty can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm.

Know before you go

  • Check for access updates before your visit for a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Be prepared for the park's chilly evenings and foggy conditions, especially if boating.
  • Keep pets on a leash and supervise children closely near the water due to fast-moving tides.
  • Buy firewood locally to prevent the spread of invasive species.
  • Remember to pack insect repellent during the warmer months to fend off pesky bugs.
