In the famous Texas Hill Country, Austin is easily the state's most diverse city. That diversity extends to the geography surrounding the city, where you'll find a wide variety of outdoor activities. Just 13 miles away is McKinney Falls State Park—hit the Onion Creek Hike and Bike Trail for 3 miles of fun exercise. For a more sedate evening, bring a fishing pole to Onion Creek itself. The enormous Lake Travis is a popular destination for water enthusiasts. With about 270 miles of shoreline, there are plenty of access points here. Pace Bend Park makes a good one for camping. Pitch a tent on a Lake Travis overlook to enjoy a beautiful sunrise. Pedernales Falls State Park sits about 30 minutes west of Austin. This one's an excellent option if you enjoy nature watching. Bring binoculars! The region hosts over 150 bird species, some rare and endangered. The mighty Pedernales River and its related waterfall are sights in themselves! Inks Lake State Park is more of a drive, about 90 minutes northwest of Austin. The titular lake allows for swimming, water skiing, fishing, and scuba diving. The park store rents a wide variety of boat types, too. Get yourself a canoe, kayak, or paddle boat and enjoy the water!
