Our favourite place we stayed along our trip from Sydney to brisbane. Loved staying here even if it was for the 1 night. Loved that we had our private little shower room and the locals here were amazing to talk to and have a laugh with at the tavern in the town centre. Right next to the ocean but if you're also nervous with swimming its fine as the river is there also where its much more calm to swim in. Would've stayed here another night if I could redo the trip.

The location for us was perfect. It allowed us each day to explore parts of the Northern rivers without too much driving. The campground was flat & lush when we were there. Lots of bird life, lots of insects. Lots of trees. A pond to take a dip. Drop toilet & a nice hot shower.

Unforgettable Nymboida Getaway! Our stay at Nymboida was incredible! Merryl was an amazing host, and the pristine river made for the perfect escape. The highlight? Spotting a platypus and two kingfishers—pure magic! The kids felt so safe, and the canoe adventure was unforgettable. Can’t wait to go back—this time, just with the boys! 😜 Highly recommend!

camping along the river was a lovely experience. the area is completely secluded and peaceful. the river is absolutely stunning, the water is clear and easy to swim and walk in. the campsites are great, with water and a firepit, everything one needs to enjoy the day. the bathrooms are also very well maintained and it actually has a hot shower which is an unexpected but welcomed bonus.

Merryl & Alister have created such a lovely place for guests to enjoy the nymboida river from a camping experience with the luxuries of a hot shower and toilets. Their genuine care for the environment and visitor experience. We appreciated all the quirky signage and the fire wood too. Will be back again for sure :)

Weekend Trip to Higher Ground Coastal Bush Retreat & Permaculture
I tent camped at higher ground in late December 2024. It is a beautiful property and Belle is a really lovely host who took the time to meet the people camping in her property and gave us a lovely tour of the farm with a super helpful explanation of permaculture concepts. I moved from the spot I was allocated to try to avoid tree branches above my tent and Belle was very accomodating. My dog loved the property. The property is set on wetlands so expect mozzies and bugs but of course that is to be expected in high summer. Drive to the property is off the tarmac road.

Higher Ground is an off-grid property that feels a world away, but is only 15 minutes drive from Maclean, 25 minutes from the stunning beaches at Brooms Head, Angourie and Yamba, and less than 2 hours from the Gold Coast. Visit our organic permaculture farm and experience the self-sufficient life you’ve been yearning for, with off-grid solar, tank-water and a waterhole for swimming. Vegies, fruit trees, heritage breed chickens with babies hatching, a shade house for seedlings – this garden is designed to minimise effort and inputs and maximize productivity. Learn about animal integration into the system, new ways of composting and food forest systems. We have a homestead for rent, Glamping Belle tents and also a variety of camping options, Each site is relatively flat and has enough shade in the hottest part of the day. Whether you are in the house or camping, you will have privacy both from your fellow campers with each site being at least 30m apart, separated by trees yet still open enough to enjoy the views of the land and each aspect of the sun throughout the day. We have a screened in camp kitchen for you to enjoy with fridge, tank water and solar power. Each site has a metal fire pit and plenty of space for 2-3 tents or caravan /motorhome with good access during the dry season. The composting toilet and hot shower are close by. We are dog friendly as long as your pet is quiet and well managed. Off-lead can be decided depending on the dog and the interaction with our passive 10 year old Koolie who is very relaxed around other dogs. They must be controlled as sheep are nearby and we have an abundance of wildlife. We have a slackline, a rope swing and badmitten for anyone looking to include more play in their stay! Responsible campfires are permitted in the metal fire pits in designated area when restrictions aren't in place. Firewood can be purchased for $15 P bag Full Mobile reception for Telstra and Optus although we encourage you to minimise screen time during your stay and immerse yourself in the off-grid lifestyle 😉. The road in is also suitable for a 2WD but more comfortable in a 4WD. Drinking water is provided. Please bring your own water for cooking and washing up. You will come here to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of `Black Mountain'. `Black Mountain’ is on Gumbainggir country. It is a registered conservation property bordering Nymboida River and Nymboi-Binderay National Park. Alastair and I have shared the property for more than 25 years and consider ourselves custodians of this precious place. Visitors enjoy: the pristine river; walking tracks through diverse terrain; starry night skies and campfires. Previous guests recommend staying at least two nights to soak up the atmosphere and explore the area. Choose from the 'Ant Shack' or four adjacent campsites with easy access and views to the Nymboida River. Shared facilities include a hot shower and composting toilets. You can walk, swim and kayak, explore the area or just relax for days. We can’t accommodate domestic animals or allow fishing, not even catch and release because we protect our wildlife and the endangered Eastern Cod. Black Mountain is remote but just 60 kilometres from Grafton or Coffs (via back way). 2WD access to our house is from Nymboida only. 4WD/AWD from Lowanna or Glenreagh and 4WD/AWD down to the river/campsite area - Not suitable for caravans. All proceeds from Airbnb and Hipcamp are invested in the continuing conservation of Black Mountain.

'Killarney Nymboida River' is a family run working cattle farm on the banks of the pristine Nymboida River, located 47km Southwest of Grafton. Our accommodation would perfectly suit a few couples, 2 families or a group of up to 10 people. Your booking will include both The Cottage and The Shed. 'The Cottage' is open plan with loft style accommodation with 2 x queen beds, 2 x KS and 2 x floor mattresses. It has a lounge room area with TV, small kitchenette and bathroom. All linen is provided. 'The Shed' is also open style accommodation with 3 x double beds and 1 x KS. It also has a bathroom with laundry, Kitchenette, the kids pool table and a ping pong table. All bed linen for this area is stored in a tub in the shed and beds can be made up by guests as needed. Just bring towels! Making memories is what we are about whether that be fishing, swimming, kayaking, watching the races in the bar over a game of pool or just sitting by the fire with your favorite tunes to relax and unwind. Some guests may be lucky enough spot a platypus or even witness the mustering team in action from a distance. For those adventure lovers out there, who enjoy canoeing or kayaking, you may want to take advantage of being on section one of 'The Longest Whitewater Trail in Australia'. If you enjoy 4WD adventures a day trip to The Junction at the Nymboi-Binderay National Park is well worth the drive. The closest town to get supplies is Coutts crossing, approx 22km drive. There is a BP service station with a general store and post office inside. Here you can also grab a coffee and takeaway food. Coutts Crossing also has a Tavern which does lunch and dinner most days and locally run raffles most Friday nights. All fishing is catch and release - Please refer to the 'Rules' regarding fishing.
