You can fish , kayak, paddle board, bring the tinny or just relax and enjoy the water view and surrounding farmland. A few shade trees and quiet surroundings makes this the perfect spot for your next getaway. Fire baskets available. Conveniently located only a 5 minute drive to Gladstone shops and hotel. There is a tap and hose (town water) on site. NOTE This is not available for vehicle washing, cleaning fish or filling large tanks. No emptying /cleaning of portable toilets please. PLEASE NOTE Campers must be equipped with their own toilet facilities , absolutely no exceptions. People abusing this rule will be asked to leave. We like our riverbank to be pristine and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you. Safe surroundings for solo travellers. We live opposite campground if assistance is required. We are a 4 minute drive from the historical town of Gladstone, which has a bakery, butcher, general store, retail shops, fruit and veg shop, nursery, cafes, restaurants, an op-shop, second hand wares shop, galleries, outdoor swim centre and of course the local pub. Gladstone Markets are on the 3rd Sunday of the month. It's a 20 minute drive to South West Rocks, Hat Head and Crescent Head. Just 45 minutes north of Port Macquarie and 1 hour south of Coffs Harbour. Please arrive before dark, or advise arrival time if not possible . You must be fully self contained, there are no facilities. Please no tents or swags. Enjoy a beautiful campsite near a large dam, watch the ducks, rosellas, cranes, herons and the occasional Jabiru, feed and nest in the trees. A great spot for bird watching. Pick your own spot, maybe near one of the fire braziers, but not directly under the trees if windy. No livestock on property but we have visiting kangaroos, tortoises, green frogs, and eels in the dam if you want to fish for them. Mid Coast Flying operate a private 800 metre airstrip on the property, and Trial Instructional Flights (TIFS) are available, for $150 for 45 minutes. Please speak to Ross when you arrive. You can pick your own site. Unfortunately we may have to close after torrential rain events. We are also pet friendly, however there are no bins, so please pick up after your pets in the camping area. Water is available near the hangar as you drive in.

If you want to avoid the crowds our property is only 10 minutes drive to great local surf and fishing beaches at Crescent Head. There is an abundance of bird life, the odd kangaroos and wallabies, and other wildlife. There is a melaleuca forest that children are welcome to play in and build a cubby house, and 2 pretty little dams to catch yabbies, and for dogs to enjoy a swim. The property where camping is provided is approx 20 acres with a limit of 10 groups so you can find your own little piece of paradise. There is plenty of fire wood for you to collect on the property on your way in. Please help yourself to any fallen timber for firewood but please do not cut any standing trees down. When checking out, ensure you properly extinguish fires and return any unused firewood to the bush. Dogs are welcome to be here off leash as long as they are well socialised and reasonably obedient. There is large areas for them to run freely and dams to swim in. It is accessible via a 2WD dirt road, even with a little wet weather. If rainfall is extreme we recommend 4wd's. The property is completely off grid so we have a 'leave it as you found it' approach. This means you will need a camp toilet, and to take all of your rubbish with you. We are a rural property so do not have rubbish collection services. (Fees apply for any left behind rubbish). Happy camping!

There are also a lot of different species of birds, including the much-loved Black Cockatoos which are in abundance here. We have also seen turtles, frilled neck lizards, diamond pythons, red belly black snakes (rarely) and goannas.

We had such a peaceful, relaxing stay. There were only 1-2 other campers so we had the place to ourselves essentially . . Sharing with Wallabies and resident birdlife. The facilities are thorough and very comfortable. Clean, with hot water. The camp kitchen is well stocked. Julie is generous with sharing her space, private features, garden etc, and the Billabong is beautiful. We could’ve stayed there forever!

We had a lovely one night stay, very peaceful and beautiful property. With only 3 sites its spaced out very well and very private but we were lucky to have it all to ourselves with no other campers - but did get to share it with Annie and Peter’s gorgeous welsh horses including 2 month old Betty! Also got to meet Ned and Patrick, the working collies. Our spot on the river was magic. Even a few showers of rain didn’t dampen the mood. We highly recommend this beautiful spot, only 10mins from Hat Head. Thanks Annie and Peter!

We had a great stay at Annie and Peter’s camping area. The location is beautiful, set right on the river with a peaceful, open outlook. The grassy area was well kept, and with only three sites, everything felt quiet and spacious. Each site is well separated, so you get plenty of privacy. It's also a great place for anyone wanting a good fishing spot by the water. Annie and Peter were lovely hosts and have thought of everything to make it an enjoyable place to stay. We'll be back!

My friends and I stayed for the weekend and absolutely loved it! The whole place was spotless and beautifully maintained — you can really tell how much care goes into keeping it that way. The swimming hole and facilities are a short walk from the campsites, and if you head up the hill, you’ll get stunning sunset views. Alex was incredibly welcoming, helpful and made sure we had everything we needed (even supplied us with loads of firewood!). Can’t wait to come back!

We loved our brief stay at Akaroa (Phoranna farm) - there's SO much space, complete privacy and you feel like you are the only one in the forest. So cool to wake up to nothing but the sound of birds and wildlife. Plus there's a wonderful bush toilet, water on tap and a great campfire set up, just a shame there was a total fireban and we couldn't take advantage of it. But we will definitely be back again in the future. It's not the cheapest Hipcamp site, but what you are getting - your own private campsite in the forest - is worth every penny in our opinion. The only thing you do need to know is that if you have a large caravan/rig over about 21 foot then you'll need to access the entrance off the main road from the south, as it's too tight a turn from the north. And there's another tight/sharp turn into the property gate, so keep left and swing wide and you'll be fine. Enjoy!!

On a clear day, it feels like you can see forever from the headland on the Korogoro Walking Track in Hat Head National Park—and if you’re on the trail in the cooler months, you’ve got a great chance of seeing whales as you walk. It’s just one of several great bushwalking tracks in the coastal national park roughly halfway between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour on the Macleay Valley Coast. Perfect for those who love back-to-basics camping holidays, fishing, bushwalking, and splashing in the sea or Korogoro Creek, Hat Head tends to get overlooked by most travellers rushing to get to more fashionable spots to the north—this is a bonus for those who prefer their getaways crowd-free.

Caravan Camping Near Hat Head National Park

Just an hour’s drive north of Port Macquarie or south of Coffs Harbour, Hat Head National Park affords the perfect coastal escape along the Pacific Highway. Whether you’re bushwalking along wild headlands, bird-watching and whale-watching from the shore, or picnicking by the beachside, this is the spot to dodge the crowds. Get up early to watch the sunrise, and you might even get the beach to yourself. Caravanners can head to one of Hat Hin’s two beachside campgrounds, which provide unpowered sites suitable for self-contained motorhomes and camper trailers, with basic facilities such as picnic tables and toilets. Alternatively, check into the holiday park, which offers spacious, powered sites along with access to a dump point, camp kitchen, and kiosk. Or, head further afield to spend the night at a quiet Hipcamp in the hills and explore the national park on a day trip instead.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for families: Hungry Gate Campground has plenty of shade, and kangaroos often graze in the camping area.
  • Best for beach lovers: Smoky Cape Campground, beneath the Smoky Cape Lighthouse, is right beside the beach and popular with fishers.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. All campsites in NSW national parks must be pre-booked online before you arrive.
  2. All national park campgrounds get busy during summer and Easter school holidays, when you’ll need to book well ahead. But go mid-week in February and March, and it’s quite possible you’ll be the only ones there.
  3. Hungry Gate Campground is a 20-minute walk from the beach, so it’s sometimes easier to secure a campsite here than at the beachside Smoky Cape Campground.

When to go

Although it can get rainy, summer offers the best camping weather and is the most popular time to visit. Days might be hottest in January and February, but March and April are best for swimming, when the sea is warmest. Winter time, May to November, is best for seeing whales from the lookouts. 

Know before you go

  • Hat Head National Park is 24 kilometres east of Kempsey, near South West Rocks.
  • Neighbouring Arakoon National Park—at the Smoky Cape end of the park near South West Rocks—is also worth a visit. Highlights include the sandstone Trial Bay Gaol ruins on the headland.
  • You can stock up with basics at the Hat Head General Store, which also stocks beer and wine and does a pretty good hamburger, too.
