2 nights at Oasis of Hope

We camped in a camper trailer and thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully kept grounds and very comfortable bathroom. The creek and wood fire barbecue were also highlights (however i had to spend 45 minutes cleaning the barbecue before we could use it). One thing I would warn future travellers (and we spoke with the camp hosts) but if travelling to Oasis from Dorrigo - DO NOT trust google maps “fastest” route along Corfes road. Corfes road is impassible (its been gated off but we were told by camp owners its barely walkable for at least the last few years). We hope the hosts make this information available to other guests if they have the done so already. If travelling from Dorrigo or inland region you need to go the less direct way via Coramba.

Such a beautiful space! Great bathroom facilities and laundry. Added bonus of power at the site too. Lovely walk up the river to the swimming hole - we will be back!

1 night at The Hatch Farm - Port Macquarie

Well kept, wide open space on the Maria River. Saw a beautiful sunset in the west and sunrise over the river (you don't get to see both in many places) The camp kitchen and amenities are rustic but efficient. The animals are gorgeous. The farm dogs are cute and friendly. Susan and Bernard were lovely hosts. We didn't get to make use of the kayaks on offer but saw other people out on the river kayaking. We only stayed one night which was Monday so we had the whole place to ourselves. Our dog loved it and now identifies as a farm dog :) Susan and Bernard also let us have some friends call in for a cuppa who were on their way North. They loved it too. If you like animals and nature, The Hatch is a great place to stay

Middle Ridge is a fantastic camping spot on the farm. The views are incredible, especially at sunrise absolutely worth waking up for. I pitched my tent next to my car, kicked back, and watched the sunset in total peace. Perfect spot for a quiet, scenic getaway. Pro Tip: A fire in the fire pit is a must!!

Weekend Trip to The Hatch Farm - Port Macquarie

We had a dream weekend at The Hatch! Fresh eggs on arrival and greeted by Host Susan who walked us to our site. Sit was MASSIVE and level, perfect for our 18ft caravan with water views! The "petting" farm is a real treat :) with chickens, ducks and rabbits all there to enjoy not to mention the friendly collies that came and said hello :) Toilets are on site if needed and at each site has a little shelter area (very nice if tenting). Rained a lot during our stay but the grounds held well, no mud! Just nice grass. We will be back to this amazing place and its now on our regular list :) Thanks Susan and Bernard! Wonderfull weekend!

This was a brilliant spot. I stayed just the one night on my way up the coast. Enjoyed hanging out with the wallabies in the rain :) It was really convenient to the highway, but far enough away that there wasn't road noise.

We stayed 2 nights and were really impressed. Fantastic place. We were really only looking for a place with easy access for an overnight stay as we were having our van serviced in Coffs. But we really liked the place and would definitely stay again. Steve and John were terrific. They really have a gem on their hands.

We had a great stay here - Bernard & Susan were so helpful and accommodating with what we needed. The place is stunning and so peaceful and the animals were a bonus - especially their gorgeous dogs Jack and Sally (there’s more but they’re the ones who took a major liking to us)! The shower was powerful and was just what we needed to freshen ourselves up. Thanks again and hopefully we’ll be back the next time we’re in the area 😊

This place is stunning! Tranquility of fresh running river over small rapids in a farm setting. Hosts (and Cheryl’s brother) were quick to answer questions. Wood for fire at a very economical cost. New pit toilets were the Gucci of all loos. Will definitely be returning and as a single 59 year woman, I felt safe and comfortable in this amazing location 🙏

Weekend Trip to Valley View Escape

The spot was beautiful! We had young kids and a dog with us, the kids loved seeing the cows and being able to go down to the lake, the toilet and showers were the cleanest I’ve ever seen out camping! We chose a weekend where it rained quite abit but was still such a beautiful spot! Would come back again (campsites aren’t ontop of each other, couldn’t even see the other campsites from our spot)

We loved camping at the Hatch Farm. The sites are enormous, flat and grassy. With a shelter shed on each site. Our dog had a blast hanging out with the farm dogs. Fishing is right on your door step. The showers and toilet were very clean and tidy. The owners were very friendly.. Highly recommend this camp site.

Yarrawin is 680 acre cattle farm and hardwood timber plantation in the heart of the Nambucca Valley, offering scenic, secluded , private campsites with their own swimming hole and a river gravel beach on 3km of beautiful double river frontage. Camping options include river side camps, the Shack and riverside camp and a large secluded valley. Each campsite is separate from the others, giving guests privacy and exclusive use of the swimming hole (except Chinamans Valley) at their site. All riverside sites offer a natural gravel beach entry into the water. There are no amenities here, campers will need to be self contained and leave no trace. Every site has a fire pit which must be used for campfires. If you want to use your own it must be off the ground. Only sand mats or similar, NO TARPS, to be set up on the grassed areas to preserve the grass. Free firewood and fire pit set up for the first night, IF YOU STAY TWO NIGHTS OR MORE. Firewood $20/ night after that (CASH ONLY PLEASE), except when camping at Chinamans Valley where you collect your own free firewood for each night. Beautiful drinking rain water is available in a 20lt Jerry can if required on arrival. Bird lovers can enjoy watching the various bird varieties, as well as ducks. Animals include wallabies, goannas, deer and fish as well as cattle and stock horses. Fishing is okay but it is STRICTLY catch and release ONLY. There are many places to go bushwalking, either following the river or heading up the valleys or hiking up the hills through the trees. The property is just 10kms from the convenience of Bowraville, a historic township with a supermarket, folk museum, a war museum, a historic theatre, and other historic buildings. Nambucca Heads and the beautiful surrounding beaches are just 27kms east and Coffs Harbour 80kms away. Please note this is a working farm, so there will be cattle and stock horses on the property that may approach your campsite.

Kooinda Farm

100 acre farm of mixed native bush and orchard plantings, with a mixture of secluded camp areas for campers with their own amenities and sites with facilities. The Woodland Lakeside campsite has a single compost toilet, and the Woodland Ridgetop sites share a camp kitchen with compost toilets and hot showers. We have two beautiful dams that are great for kayaking and swimming, and creek frontage where you can fish. Beautiful views of Yarrahapinni Mountain to the east and hills out to the west. There are 40 acres of bushland to go walkabout. Geese and ducks free range the property and feeding time visits can be arranged. We are just 1.5km of single track gravel road to the Pacific Highway with good access for all types of vehicles. There is a choice of private campsites either by the dam or the creek with no other campers in sight! We also have a multi site area at the Woodland Ridgetop with a camp kitchen, compost toilets and showers. This will be available to be booked as a large group area or as 3 individual sites. Later in 2024 we will also have beautiful glamping bell tent sites available. Drinking water (tank water) is available from an outdoor tap at the farmhouse, as long as we have had sufficient rainfall. Please check in advance if you require water. Campers MUST have their own self contained amenities for the Creek Camp, and the 2 Parking Sites, and leave no trace. There is a toilet dump point for chemical toilets in Macksville, 10 mins away. Heartwood Farm is a centrally located 120 acres on the Mid-North Coast - about halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, only 1.5 kms off Pacific Highway, 25 mins to Port Macquarie, 15 Mins to Kempsey, 30 minutes to Crescent Head and 45 mins to South West Rocks. We are off grid and live close to nature and enjoy the abundance that provides. We have been building and developing for the last few years. We are still a work in progress. There are three Brumbies that live over the fence and 5 other horses that will no doubt come and say hello. They are all friendly, especially if you have a carrot. There are also a lot of kangaroos and wallabies, some quite friendly as they have been raised by our neighbour who does animal rescue. There are also a lot of different species of birds, including the much-loved Black Cockatoos which are in abundance here. We have also seen turtles, frilled neck lizards, diamond pythons, red belly black snakes (rarely) and goannas.

Never Never Park is a Sub-Tropical Rainforest property which borders the ancient Gondwana World Heritage National Park on 2 sides including along Coopernook creek. Located half an hours drive Northeast of Dorrigo and 1 hour West of Coffs Harbour (via Eastern Dorrigo Way) in the beautiful Bellingen Shire, surrounded by various National Parks with 4WD tracks, crystal clear creeks, waterfalls, cascades, swimming holes and picnic areas. The property is 400 acres featuring spring fed mountain streams, cascades and waterfalls that run through its central gorge. First surveyed in 1906 and logged in the days of bullocks and hand saws, remnants of a bygone era remain including the “Jack Feeney Memorial Giant Tallowwood Tree”, a Champion Tree of Australia listed in the National Register of Big Trees. It’s over 50m tall, more than 1000 years old, and was around long before Captain Cook reached our shores. The landscape starts in dense Sub-Tropical Rainforest opening up to lush green pastures overlooking the amazing views to the west showcasing the rolling lush green pastures, hills and 1600m high mountain range towards Marengo. The local fauna is amazing and quite rare, featuring the locals of the Gondwana Rainforests, Koala’s, Wallabies, Paddy Melons, Lyre Birds, Satin Bower Birds, Glossy Black Cockatoo’s, King parrots, Crimson Rosella’s, Wedgetail Eagles, Catbirds, Riflebirds, Fairy wrens, Diamond pythons, Water dragons, Giant Panda snails, Glow Worms, Fire Flys and many more… including our Horses, Cows, Chooks and Bees. Similarly, the flora is very diverse including Native Tall Hardwoods, various types of Palms and tree ferns, Rainforest and flowering Trees, Vines, flowering grasses, Stag Elk horns and other epiphytes, Crows nests, Mosses, Orchids and more. A magical land that time forgot - Tranquil and Peaceful. Campers will be able to enjoy state forest access to explore wildlife or sit back, relax and take in the extensive views of the ocean, farmland and green valley, established tropical fruit trees, wandering cattle in close proximity and occasional native animals wandering by, city lights at night can be seen while under the stars, privacy assured. There are also bush walks for guests to enjoy. There are few facilities here, tank water and a sawdust composting toilet, picnic table and small contained fire pit also... campers need to be self sufficient with optional own toilet/shower facilities and leave no trace. The camp site has had an upgrade beautification and facility program that is fully available. The property is in close proximity to the ocean and the city, just a 10 minute drive too the Coffs Harbour CBD. You're welcome to bring your pet, but they must be supervised and kept under control. Campfire are permitted in the provided fire area. Please note that some sites require 4WD access and are a steep climb (see photos). Caravan access is limited to small to medium length only. Large vans require assistance so not recommended for this site.

Overview

Strung out along the shores of Horseshoe Bay at the mouth of the Macleay River, South West Rocks is all about long lazy days in the sun, splashing about in the water, surfing, fishing, and hiking cliff-top walking trails. A perennial favourite with families, it’s very much a get-back-to-nature type of place, with several holiday parks offering camping and glamping experiences, including a beachfront caravan park in the middle of town. The campsites at nearby Arakoon National Park also overlook the sea. Explore the sandstone ruins of Trial Bay Gaol, watch the sunrise from Smoky Cape Lighthouse, or dive with rare grey nurse sharks at Fish Rock Cave, one of the longest ocean cave dives in Australia. If you tire of the sun and sand, there’s plenty of rainforest nearby to explore as well.

Where to go

South Along the Coast

The village of Hat Head, half an hour’s drive south, is an even sleepier version of South West Rocks, with beaches just as nice and a beachside caravan park. The three-kilometre walking trail around the hat-shaped headland in the national park is one of the best cliff-top walks in the region. The next town south of Hat Head, Crescent Head, is home to one of Australia’s most famous right-hand surfing breaks and is a favourite with longboard riders.

Through the Rainforest

Explore the lush rainforest and wetlands north of South West Rocks in Yarriabini National Park and Yarrahapinni Wetlands on the 17-kilometre Way Way Creek Road scenic loop drive. The view from Yarriabini Lookout is a knockout.

Kempsey

Follow the Macleay River southwest to Kempsey, with its heritage houses, Wigay Aboriginal Cultural Park bushtucker farm, and riverside holiday parks. Kempsey is the birthplace of the iconic Aussie hat, the Akubra.

When to go

The weather is good for camping all year on the NSW North Coast, with lots of sunny days. The water is warmest for swimming between December and April. You’ll need to book ahead in summer and during Easter holidays, but outside of school holidays, you’ll have most of the place to yourself on mid-week visits. From May through to November you’ve got a good chance at spotting whales from the headlands.

Stock up on seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables from the many stalls that line the South West Rocks Road that links the township to the Pacific Highway.
Planning on catching your dinner? You’ll need a recreational fishing license, available online and at most fishing bait and tackle shops.
Beachside Markets are held in the reserve opposite Horseshoe Bay in the middle of South West Rocks on the second Saturday of each month.
