Affectionately dubbed "The Snowies," the Snowy Mountains and its surrounding sub-region is home to the highest mountain range on the mainland, encompassing five of the nation’s tallest peaks. While the region is best known for its skiing and snowboarding opportunities, of which there are plenty, it's also a great place to visit in the summer months. Popular fair-weather activities include fishing, mountain biking, bushwalking, and spelunking, and many people visit the region specifically to visit the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, accessible by chairlift or on foot via the Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk.  It's also a great place to camp, snow or shine, with plenty of campgrounds, cabins, and more than a few caravan parks.

Rolling hills, Quite still. Few trees, Much to see. Many granite rocks, Like sheep in flocks. Natural sounds, At ‘Duck Downs’. T.J Wilson We have 3 remote sites and 3 dispersed sites and the property is six kilometers from Dalgety township which is situated on the “Snowy River” NSW. We are located 30 minutes drive south east of Jindabyne and 40 minutes drive south west of Cooma. There is a flush toilet and fresh drinking water is available at our dispersed sites. Caravans can easily be filled up via garden hose and if you are staying on one of the remote sites this can be done easily prior to settling in. We have a mowed loop track giving easy access from each site to stroll to the top of the hill, walk the dog or enjoy the 360 degree views. Take a picnic in the evening or just a glass of wine and watch the sunset from the top of the hill. After dark, relax and toast some marshmallows over the fire pit and discuss what you are going to do the next day. The land was originally once a part of "Marranumbla Homestead". I have called it home since 1995 and now share it with my partner Phillip, our son, Danish the Whippet, Murphy the Malshi, Myonie the Moodle and Finley the cat. The house yard only had 2 trees when I bought it and the house built originally in 1980 still needed completing on the inside. I have worked hard to create an extensive garden in a sometimes harsh environment. It's our peaceful part of the "Snowy Monaro", the property being 155 acres in total. A great place to wander and breath in the fresh air. In Dalgety township you can have a meal and catch up with a local at the "Buckley's Crossing Hotel" or take a walk around the show ground, town and along the river reserve where you can have a swim and relax on the riverbank and view the historic Dalgety Bridge circa 1888 across the Snowy River. Then come back in the evening to look for platypus when they come out to play. Visit the local 'Snowy Vineyard and Microbrewery' incorporating the 'Dalgety Brewing Company' situated approximately 10km north of the town on the Snowy River or have lunch at 'Tuscany in Dalgety' 2km to the west of town. Take a trip to Jindabyne which is half an hours drive to the west, walk round the lake, visit the 'Jindabyne Brewery', great food, beer, cider and wine or the many other restaurants and cafes in town. Spend some time at the 'Snowy Region Visitor Centre' and the 'Gaden Trout Hatchery' or catch your own trout in the lake or at the 'Eucumbene Trout Farm'. Travel beyond into the mountains and Kosciusko National Park to Thredbo, Perisher Valley and Charlottes Pass. Explore the many walks in the national park including the walk to the top of Mt Kosciusko. Visit the 'Wild Brumby Distillery' enjoy some European fare and locally crafted Schnapps, Gin, Vodka or Gluhwein. Take a day trip through Adaminaby to 'Yarrangobilly Caves and Thermal Pool' in the northern end of Kosciusko National Park, picnic, swim and tour the caves. Visit the "Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre and Café in Cooma and learn the history of the scheme. The Centre houses a comprehensive exhibition hall including an extensive photographic collection, models, hands-on exhibits and a one of a kind immersive theatre. You will find information about the Scheme such as engineering, the environment, the National Electricity Market, history, water management and power generation. Make it your base camp while enjoying all that the winter season has to offer and lets not forget the skiing and snow boarding of course. Well that's just a sample of some of the things you can do but if all that sounds like too much, just put your feet up and have a rest at your campsite!! P.S. The annual Dalgety Show is held on the first Sunday in March every year and did you know that Dalgety was one of the sites considered for our country's capital. We grow potatoes, garlic, pumpkins and a variety of summer vegetables as well as running 60 head of angus cows. We are excited to offer rustic accommodation on the farm, perfect for those wanting to enjoy the tranquillity of country life, a drink at the campfire, bush walks, fishing in our large fresh water dam or as a base to explore the Snowy Mountains. You have a choice of two shipping containers, both furnished with a double bed. As well as two campsites to pitch your own tent, on a flat grassy area near the converted shipping containers. A shared toilet and hot shower is located 80m from the accommodation. You will have access to drinking water if required. Please also note: - Arriving time is strictly between 2pm and no later than 8pm at night . - Checking out time is 12 pm. - The driveway from the highway to the site is a gravel road suitable for 2WD however please drive according to conditions - The site is located near the farm sheds, whilst we will respect your privacy you will be staying on a working farm consequently some movement and noise will not be avoidable between 8am and dark. - You are welcome to try your luck fishing in the dam or if you have a kayak and life jacket you can bring for a paddle, however please be aware that the unfenced dam is a drowning hazard for children. - We provide firewood at an extra cost of $20/bundle - As there is no council bin service available we ask that you take your rubbish with you. - Full telephone signal available for Telstra, however, any other provider is patchy. - Please note that there are farm dogs on the property, and no other pets are allowed.

Our story starts in Far North Queensland, when a german backpacker, me :), met an Aussie fisherman, Craig. To cut the long story short, after living together in Germany we decided to move back to Australia. We had a vision, trying to find our perfect place to live. Starting out with a car, a camper trailer and two bags we travelled from North Queensland down to Tasmania. Looking for a place to live. On our way through Tumbarumba everything started to unfold and we fell in love with our property. The feel, the experience and the climate. This was it! We've found our perfect place and finally named it "Creal's Rest" which has two meanings for us. Obviously from our name, but also from "creel" which is a wicker basket usually used for carrying fish. Escape the hustle bustle of life on our 10 acres alpaca life style farm which is nestled between beautiful hills and grazing properties on Walteela Road in Mannus (20 min drive to Tumbarumba). Walteela means "Place of Peace" and that is what you might be looking for. No traffic waking you. Listen to the sounds of nature instead... Enjoy the peacefulness, local wildlife (kookaburras, echidnas, wombats, kangaroos, etc.), small creek, stunning mountain views and dark skies for star gazing. Birdwatchers... you'll love it! Love fishing? Enjoy a chat with Craig, who has been a pro line fisherman for 18 years in the GBR! He loves to explore, show off the local fishing spots and a chat about all things fishing! Mannus Creek is only a couple of min drive away and Mannus Lake 15-20 min drive. Hand feed our friendly alpacas, greet our pet chickens and find some eggs. A wonderful quiet and peaceful place to stay. Our site was very secluded. It had a fire pit, drinking water and bins provided. Also a little lamb and two little dogs came for a visit. Dogs allowed. $28 per night 2A + 2 Dogs.

We had a lovely 2 nights stay at Creal’s Rest. It was very peaceful. The alpacas were sweet and curious and there was even a baby alpaca! The burbling creek was pretty and a soothing sound. The big apple box gum tree was spectacular and provided nice shade. The site is just down the hill from the main house but quite private. There is a composting drop toilet (with no door). We saw a few platypus in Mannus creek 5 minutes drive down the road at the bridge. It was lovely and green in late spring. Our hosts were kindly and interesting to chat with. Thanks for having us!

Phillip and Nerridah were great hosts; we had a lovely and relaxing three night stay at Duck Downs. The views are spectacular and we loved the location. We were supplied with a fire pit and the cost of firewood was very reasonable.

Absolutely gorgeous! The campsites are set up so well, with the fireplace, table, bins and drinking water all available. Views were absolutely stunning. Would 100% recommend to anyone wanting their own little slice of heaven.

We had an absolutely amazing time camping on Beatrice, Tobias, Laurence & Lina’s land! The entire experience was fantastic, starting with the hosts, who are incredibly welcoming and accommodating—they really went out of their way to make our stay fun. ​The property offers two distinct and great sites. We found that both have lots of free space for setup, which is wonderful. For those prioritizing convenience, Site 2 is closer to the toilet and shower facilities. ​The scenery around the farm is breathtaking; the lake and the surrounding farmland are truly beautiful. It’s a very peaceful and picturesque setting. ​One important tip for future Hipcampers: since the sites are located around 700 meters above sea level, it can get quite chilly, even during late spring. Be sure to pack extra layers and warm gear for the evenings! ​Overall, we had a blast and highly recommend this beautiful spot.

Time to relax... bring your hammock if you have one or two or three. The huge apple box tree provides a perfect spot to chill in the shade.

Weekend Trip to Creal's Rest
Absolutely beautiful countryside, beautiful stream right beside camp. Hosts were amazingly warm and inviting. The kids really enjoyed the alpaca feeding. It was completely comfortable for our five kids to run off some energy and there is a very convenient clean long drop which was a definite plus for us👌 We will definitely be returning, thanks again to our wonderful hosts 👍

Creal's rest is an amazing break away - from the beautiful tree and creek, to the loo with a view and alpacas. The hosts are nothing short of fabulous and were very knowledgeable about where to spot the elusive platypus to the amazing Sswedish torch. We had a great time and hope to be back.

This property offers a vast stretch of land with plenty of privacy, yet the owners were warm and welcoming throughout our stay. There’s an abundance of wildlife to spot kangaroos, wombats, sheep, and more, making it a wonderful place to connect with nature. A beautiful, quiet spot to truly unwind, and very reasonably priced as well.

Open space, had access to a fire pit and water as well as bins. Away from all other sites, however toilet was abit different to find at first. Overall lovely stay.

Where to go

The Sydney Area

Cosmopolitan Sydney offers big-city charm and easy access to fantastic beaches and natural areas. While plenty of people come here to dine, shop, and take in the city lights, you won’t need to drive far from the city to find yourself out in nature. Some of the best (and easiest-to-reach) camping areas near Sydney include Lane Cove National Park and Royal National Park, both within a short drive of the Central Business District.

The Blue Mountains

Not far from Sydney, the Blue Mountains offer some of New South Wales's finest scenery, from massive rock formations such as the iconic Three Sisters to the enchanting Jenolan Caves. It's a popular destination for bushwalkers and rock climbers alike and has plenty of campgrounds, from forested spots tucked among gum trees to private wilderness campsites far away from it all.

The South Coast of New South Wales

If you want to get away from the crowds but still wish to spend time near the sea, the South Coast may just be the ticket. Head to Booderee National Park to see wildlife or make your way down to Jervis Bay for a bit of kayaking. Like to surf? Head to Kiama to check out the waves or head south to take in the scenery in nearby Gerringong.

The Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is best known for its wineries, and it’s got plenty of them, but even teetotalers will find plenty to do in this lovely region. Highlights include the massive Lake Macquarie, the largest saltwater lake on the coast of Australia, and Mount Royal, which is part of the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests of Australia.
