If you want to avoid the crowds our property is only 10 minutes drive to great local surf and fishing beaches at Crescent Head. There is an abundance of bird life, the odd kangaroos and wallabies, and other wildlife. There is a melaleuca forest that children are welcome to play in and build a cubby house, and 2 pretty little dams to catch yabbies, and for dogs to enjoy a swim. The property where camping is provided is approx 20 acres with a limit of 10 groups so you can find your own little piece of paradise. There is plenty of fire wood for you to collect on the property on your way in. Please help yourself to any fallen timber for firewood but please do not cut any standing trees down. When checking out, ensure you properly extinguish fires and return any unused firewood to the bush. Dogs are welcome to be here off leash as long as they are well socialised and reasonably obedient. There is large areas for them to run freely and dams to swim in. It is accessible via a 2WD dirt road, even with a little wet weather. If rainfall is extreme we recommend 4wd's. The property is completely off grid so we have a 'leave it as you found it' approach. This means you will need a camp toilet, and to take all of your rubbish with you. We are a rural property so do not have rubbish collection services. (Fees apply for any left behind rubbish). Happy camping!

Bernard and Susan are custodians of the farm, primarily using the land for poultry (egg), pig, and goat farming. They are transitioning to an off-grid and eco-friendly lifestyle for their retirement. The Hatch Farm is home to many animals, most of whom are rescues - including border collies, cavalier king charles spaniels, chickens, ducks, pigs, sheep, goats, miniature horses, cows, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. There is plenty to do and see around the farm from complete relaxation, interacting with the friendly animals (there is usually a variety of babies to cuddle!), to casting a line or launching your boat from the rustic boat ramp. If you want to avoid the crowds our property is only 10 minutes drive to great local surf and fishing beaches at Crescent Head. There is an abundance of bird life, the odd kangaroos and wallabies, and other wildlife. There is a melaleuca forest that children are welcome to play in and build a cubby house, and 2 pretty little dams to catch yabbies, and for dogs to enjoy a swim. The property where camping is provided is approx 20 acres with a limit of 10 groups so you can find your own little piece of paradise. There is plenty of fire wood for you to collect on the property on your way in. Please help yourself to any fallen timber for firewood but please do not cut any standing trees down. When checking out, ensure you properly extinguish fires and return any unused firewood to the bush. Dogs are welcome to be here off leash as long as they are well socialised and reasonably obedient. There is large areas for them to run freely and dams to swim in. It is accessible via a 2WD dirt road, even with a little wet weather. If rainfall is extreme we recommend 4wd's. The property is completely off grid so we have a 'leave it as you found it' approach. This means you will need a camp toilet, and to take all of your rubbish with you. We are a rural property so do not have rubbish collection services. (Fees apply for any left behind rubbish). Happy camping!

Set on 100 acres, half way between Sydney and Brisbane and just 5 minutes off the Pacific Highway, The Harvest House is an ideal place to stop over to break-up your journey. The property is a mixture of fields and bushland. Old logging tracks cut through the trees are perfect for exploring. There is an abundance of wildlife from kangaroos and wallabies to red and yellow tailed black cockatoos, and even the occasional echidna! There are several camping areas to choose from. We have room for RV's and big camping rigs to pull up too. Well behaved pets are welcome. Suited to self-contained campers only as there are no facilities onsite. The famous Eungai Creek Buffalo farm and cafe is just 5 mins away and beautiful beaches, shops and restaurants are all within a 20 minute drive.

At Hamiltons Hideaway we have 6 generous sites set on the banks of Pelican Creek. Fishing, mud crabs and wildlife at your site. With access to the Manning River with either a canoe, kayak, SUP or tinny. Or just fish off the bank for a flathead, bream or mullet. Spacious area for a game of cricket or just for the kids to run around. Relax by the creek of an afternoon watching the sunset. We are located 5mins from the Pacific Highway, 5mins to Harrington and 10mins to Crowdy Head. Close to town for shops and courtesy buses run to the property from the local pubs and club. Close to national parks and a short drive to beaches, waterfalls and mountain views.

Great little spot. Short 10min from the highway. I just stopped in for the night on my travels south but I would definitely pop in again. Jaimie and Greg were lovely and kind enough to give me some tank water. The campsite was large and well set out with little fire pits at each site. Thanks for a great stay!

What a beautiful place!!! We absolutely loved our stay and can’t wait to go back! Rick and Cheryl’s place is so warm and welcoming, nothing is a bother! The river is clear and beautiful, the hospitality is amazing, feeding the animals was an absolute highlight for our little city kids! It was a struggle to get the kids out of the place! The sites are so big and the is plenty of shade along the river. Toilets were super clean and well Maintained. I honestly could rave about the place for days. Book a stay is my advice!

We absolutely loved camping at Bundilla River Camp. Large grassy sites, the river was the perfect cooling down spot with boogie boards and kayaks available. The kids swings and bikes were an added bonus and we really enjoyed the farm tour. We loved that we could order wood which was delivered straight to the site and the baked goods by Nicole were so delicious!

Me and my partner had a great time camping here. Didn’t have time to do the farm tour, but just setting up metres away from the river was enough. short walk or drive to the river access point, communal kayaks and boogie boards were an amazing touch. River water was a good temperature, a very picturesque creek and some incredible birdlife. Rick and Cheryl were both very friendly and reachable but not overbearing. Thanks for having us!

Amazing spot, just 10 minutes from everything. The hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We extended our stay because we loved it so much. Our kids absolutely enjoyed the animals, especially the friendly dogs. Evenings by the fire and beautiful sunsets and sunrises over the river made it extra special. 10/10 — the best place we’ve stayed so far.

Would definitely recommend to anyone it’s a beautiful spot the hosts Rick and Cheryl are soo lovely and friendly and welcoming they take very good care of the area their daughter comes down every arvo with fresh baked cakes and cookies to buy which are very yummy the kids loved going up to their place to feed the animals and and we had soo much fun swimming there the water is soo nice we spent a lot of time just floating around on our floaties can’t wait to go back there dog friendly very relaxed and only about a 20 min drive into Port Macquarie If you need to get anything

What an amazing camp site. The sites are large, there are a few powered sites but mostly unpowered. Cheryl and Rick were fantastic hosts. The river is stunning and they provide plenty of kayaks free of charge for you to use. The drop toilets are in impeccable condition. They provide farm tours for the kids to pat and feed animals, and their daughter sells fresh baked treats every afternoon to curb the sweet cravings. The camp site is only 30 minutes from Port Macquarie so very accessible. We will definately be back.

Where to go

South Along the Coast

About a 40-minute drive south of Port Macquarie, Crowdy Bay National Park is a coastal getaway famed for its rugged cliffs, white-sand beaches, and wildlife-filled forests. It’s also the perfect vantage point from where to watch migrating whales in winter. Diamond Head, in the park’s northern section, is one of the biggest and most popular camping areas with plenty of space and facilities, while Crowdy Gap Campground is a short walk from the beach and Kylie’s Beach Campground is set behind sand dunes.

North Along the Coast

Just under an hour north of the city, Goolawah National Park and Goolawah Regional Park offer camping in peaceful surroundings just a short stroll from the beach. Opportunities for outdoor adventures abound, from surfing and fishing to birdwatching. Accommodation options include Racecourse Campground in the national park, which offers showers and toilets, or the basic but pet-friendly Delicate Campground, in the regional park. Another 40 minutes north takes you to Hat Head National Park, known for landmarks like Smoky Cape Lighthouse and the Trial Bay Gaol, as well as plentiful canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Hungry Gate and Smoky Cape campgrounds both have toilets and barbecues.

Inland

About 45 minutes southwest of Port Macquarie, Kerewong State Forest offers lush surroundings, walking trails through native forest, and cool creeks ideal for swimming. In the forest, Swans Crossing is a popular camping area with toilet facilities and picnic tables on former farmland. Mount Boss State Forest is a secluded getaway about 90 minutes northwest of Port Macquarie by road. Area campgrounds offer peace and quiet as well as waterholes ideal for cooling off.

When to go

Port Macquarie’s warm subtropical climate is one of Australia’s most comfortable and makes camping and enjoying the area a pleasure year-round. Campsites are typically less crowded during the winter months (June through August), which is also the time for whale-watching. Spring (September through November), on the other hand, is a draw for birdwatchers and promises coastal heathlands blooming with brightly colored wildflowers. Temperatures and rainfall are highest in summer (December through February).

  • Port Macquarie has several camping gear stores where you can gather supplies before heading out. Top picks include Anaconda and BCF (Boating Camping Fishing).
  • Smoking is prohibited in all NSW national parks.
  • Pets are not permitted in New South Wales national parks or reserves, but they are allowed in some regional parks and all state forests.
  • Some area campgrounds, such as Crowdy Gap, require advance bookings.
