Visit our organic permaculture farm and experience the self-sufficient life you’ve been yearning for, with off-grid solar, tank-water and a waterhole for swimming. Vegies, fruit trees, heritage breed chickens with babies hatching, a shade house for seedlings – this garden is designed to minimise effort and inputs and maximize productivity. Learn about animal integration into the system, new ways of composting and food forest systems.
We have a homestead for rent, Glamping Belle tents and also a variety of camping options, Each site is relatively flat and has enough shade in the hottest part of the day.
Whether you are in the house or camping, you will have privacy both from your fellow campers with each site being at least 30m apart, separated by trees yet still open enough to enjoy the views of the land and each aspect of the sun throughout the day. We have a screened in camp kitchen for you to enjoy with fridge, tank water and solar power. Each site has a metal fire pit and plenty of space for 2-3 tents or caravan /motorhome with good access during the dry season.
The composting toilet and hot shower are close by. We are dog friendly as long as your pet is quiet and well managed. Off-lead can be decided depending on the dog and the interaction with our passive 10 year old Koolie who is very relaxed around other dogs. They must be controlled as sheep are nearby and we have an abundance of wildlife.
We have a slackline, a rope swing and badmitten for anyone looking to include more play in their stay!
Responsible campfires are permitted in the metal fire pits in designated area when restrictions aren't in place. Firewood can be purchased for $15 P bag
Full Mobile reception for Telstra and Optus although we encourage you to minimise screen time during your stay and immerse yourself in the off-grid lifestyle 😉.
The road in is also suitable for a 2WD but more comfortable in a 4WD.

Shark Creek Retreat is an ongoing conservation project, where I call myself the caretaker of these beautiful wetlands. I have dedicated 77 acres of it as a wildlife sanctuary, it is a member of the Wildlife Land Trust and has joined the Land for Wildlife environmental community. To date there is a property bird list worthy of a small National Park for all you keen birders out there. To date I have been busy regenerating previously cleared land from farming and the 2019 bush fire with native plants local to this area in the 100's.
My aim is to surround most of the property in wildlife friendly fencing, regenerate the flora and create a fauna corridor as a wildlife safety zone from the wetlands to the road and to create a tranquil little space for nature appreciative people to stop and a take a rest.
Shark Creek Retreat is a conservation area, no amenities, no bins etc. so you would need to be self sufficient and responsible for own waste. What you bring, you must take. So if camping out in a conservation area appeals to you then head out to Shark Creek Retreat, stay for a night or stay for a week 💚🌳

The campsites are situated right on the bank of the mighty Clarence River, perfectly suited for campers who enjoy the peace and quiet.

Our sites are available for booking up to 3 months in advance.
Our property is inhabited by a few cattle and kangaroos and on occasions a couple of visiting brolgas. The private boat ramp is accessible at the main house which is about 100 metres from your campsite. You are welcome to make use of our canoe or kayak which are kept up at the main house.
Pets are welcome but must be kept under control.
Campfires are allowed permitting there are no restrictions in place.
Each campsite has it's own firepit surround in which to light your camp fire. Firewood is available for purchase.
Campers must bring their own toilet and be fully self sufficient. Leave the site as you found it and take all waste with you on departure. The campsite is accessible by 2WD and can accommodate caravans, campervans and camper trailers. The sites are generally level and grassy.

We operate as a cottage industry, processing alpaca fleece & manufacturing products from it. We regularly conduct tours & maintain a small farm shop.

Across the river and just 15 minutes from the Scottish town of Maclean, nestled high in the Yamba hinterland.
You will not hear traffic, you will not see headlights. Pure peace and tranquility for you to relax, chill and enjoy.
The sites are surrounded by rugged mountainous bush land with views, trails, cliffs, 3 creeks to explore and includes a private lake ‘Lake Arid’ with its own island, ‘Dead Dog Island’. Swim, paddle, fish, play.
Metres away is another private swimming hole ‘Pants Off Pond’ stocked with Silver Perch and Bass.
So whether you indulge in pants off, or leave them on and just fish it’s up to you.
Explore a little further and you’ll find ‘The Abyss’ a former micro quarry, 9m deep waterhole.
The creeks have waterfalls, swimming holes, pure and clean, though are a rugged unmarked hike.
The sites are site only. You’ll need to take care of your waste, water, rubbish and power. Generator is ok, we’re out of earshot, so is everyone else.
Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit and an abundance of ‘cut your own’ firewood upon the ground.
Remember, fires this time of year are for ‘cooking only’, so be sure to bring those marshmallows…
Pet Friendly, 4WD friendly with a bunch of serious challenges too… Horse friendly too, yep, there’s a yard to keep them too, up by the house.
Accessible by 2WD with sites with enough space for any size caravan or motor home.

Step onto our four‑generation working cane and cattle farm, where the smell of fresh‑cut cane, the hum of farm life, and the shimmer of the Clarence River set the tone for your stay. Your adventure begins at the entrance, marked by “Rusty,” our old sugarcane harvester — a true piece of local history and a favourite photo stop.

Life on the Farm

Life on the River
This part of the Clarence is famous for water skiing, boating, and long, glassy stretches perfect for exploring. The fishing here is excellent, with calm water and plenty of great spots right from the property. We often boat across to Maclean for supplies, giving guests a real taste of river life.
The sunsets here are something else — short, stunning bursts of colour that light up the whole river and paddocks. As the sun drops, the sky turns gold, pink, and deep orange, and the Clarence reflects it all like glass. It’s a quiet, peaceful moment where everything slows down and the whole farm glows.

There’s plenty to do nearby — enjoy a meal at the Harwood Hotel, stop for morning tea on Chatsworth Island, or join in local favourites like the Maclean Cane Harvest Festival, Maclean Highland Gathering, Yamba, Iluka and Brooms head famous beaches and the Grafton Races. Sunsets are the feature here with incredible views across to the hinterland. Watch Kangaroos, dolphins, eagles, pelicans and a ton of fish! We also have horses should you be interested in some 'equine experiences' (ground work only). You will forever remember your stay at River and Sky Cottage!

Guests staying with us are required to be fully self contained with their own toilet/shower facilities and must take all waste and rubbish with them on departure.
Campers can launch a boat from the property to enjoy all the river has to offer. You can drive the boat to the Ulmarra Hotel nearby, they have a jetty where you can park and enjoy a feed and a drink. You also can take the Ulmarra Ferry and Drive to the Ulmarra Hotel for dinner or lunch.
You can access the property via road from Grafton or via Ferry from Lawrence and Maclean. We are located just 11kms from Grafton should you need any supplies. Please note, caravans are not permitted on the Ferry but camper trailers are okay.
We farm Hay on the property and do have some friendly cattle around who may wander past to say hello.

Shark Creek Retreat is an ongoing conservation project, where I call myself the caretaker of these beautiful wetlands. I have dedicated 77 acres of it as a wildlife sanctuary, it is a member of the Wildlife Land Trust and has joined the Land for Wildlife environmental community. To date there is a property bird list worthy of a small National Park for all you keen birders out there. The sites are surrounded by rugged mountainous bush land with views, trails, cliffs, 3 creeks to explore and includes a private lake ‘Lake Arid’ with its own island, ‘Dead Dog Island’. Swim, paddle, fish, play.
Metres away is another private swimming hole ‘Pants Off Pond’ stocked with Silver Perch and Bass.
So whether you indulge in pants off, or leave them on and just fish it’s up to you.
Explore a little further and you’ll find ‘The Abyss’ a former micro quarry, 9m deep waterhole.
The creeks have waterfalls, swimming holes, pure and clean, though are a rugged unmarked hike.
The sites are site only. You’ll need to take care of your waste, water, rubbish and power. Generator is ok, we’re out of earshot, so is everyone else.
Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit and an abundance of ‘cut your own’ firewood upon the ground.
Remember, fires this time of year are for ‘cooking only’, so be sure to bring those marshmallows…

This part of the Clarence is famous for water skiing, boating, and long, glassy stretches perfect for exploring. The fishing here is excellent, with calm water and plenty of great spots right from the property. We often boat across to Maclean for supplies, giving guests a real taste of river life.
The sunsets here are something else — short, stunning bursts of colour that light up the whole river and paddocks. As the sun drops, the sky turns gold, pink, and deep orange, and the Clarence reflects it all like glass. It’s a quiet, peaceful moment where everything slows down and the whole farm glows.

Campers can launch a boat from the property to enjoy all the river has to offer. You can drive the boat to the Ulmarra Hotel nearby, they have a jetty where you can park and enjoy a feed and a drink. You also can take the Ulmarra Ferry and Drive to the Ulmarra Hotel for dinner or lunch.

The North East facing sites overlooking the river and rocky cliffs opposite, the view is really quite serene. There is easy river access, ideal for launching kayaks or heading in for a dip.
All campers need to be equipped with their own camp toilet, and we kindly ask they take all waste when they leave.
We offer several camping sites on the riverside site, but also we offer the option for larger groups to book the entire riverside site out exclusively. Please refer to the different site options.

Equine Assisted Therapy experiences are available upon request. Rest Point Hotel is less than 20 km from the property, and Grafton City is only a 25 km drive away. The property has formed dirt road access, suitable for vehicles with normal clearance. Off-grid power and a modern, smell-free composting toilet are provided! No air con, its off grid and quite hot in summer.

We provide 4WD accessible riverbank campsites suitable for tents, camper trailers and off road caravans. In good weather some sites can be accessed with 2WD vehicles. Beautiful spot on the tip of the island, such a peaceful getaway. Steven puts alot of effort into maintaining the grass in the campsites and checks in with campers daily. There is a fair amount of space so you aren't camping on top of each other and each site has its own firepit. He is always accessible by phone and a great character to have a chat with, while also giving campers space and privacy. While the facilities are rustic, the campground is advertised as off grid, so having basic functional facilities really is a bonus. The two resident Kelpies are very well trained and well mannered and friendly, and we also had a lovely rooster keep us company at our site. There are a number of good fishing spots both at the campsites and around the farm, and quite a few kayaks to use also. We really enjoyed the sunrises and sunsets over the river too. Maclean and Yamba are only about half an hr drive away for extra supplies, but there is little to no noise or light pollution on the island.

We sure found a gem here on the Clarence! Squiggles went above & beyond to accommodate us after our Easter plans were cancelled elsewhere!
His property is amazing & he has thought of everything from Kayaks to fishing rods to make sure everyone is happy! Firewood delivered every day!
A true gem & we are extremely grateful for squiggles! Hope he enjoyed the roast we made him! We will be back

Perfect little oasis to escape to. We loved waking up on the farm, with the horses and the river at our door step. Living in a busy day to day life mixed with city traffic it was blissfull to get away and have time to breathe and slow down. Loved the whole experience. Easy to find. Had the luxury to pick our own site, had the best spot overlooking the river. Very picturesque views! Plenty of hospitality with squiggles giving us more than enough fire wood. Very accommodating and nice fella. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a chill weekend off grid. Thanks so much for having us squiggles, we will be back for sure!

This was such a fantastic camping area. Sites are right on the river, fire pits at each site, drinking water available, firewood for sale and very clean flushing toilets. Terrific Hipcamp for just chilling out or for using as a base to explore the area. Hosts are very friendly and accommodating. Would highly recommend this Hipcamp 😎

Beautiful location right on the river. We were lucky enough to watch dolphins swim by in the morning and afternoon. Property is maintained so well. Site 4 has heaps of room. Very quiet. Directions provided by the owner are super easy to follow. Will stay again.

My stay was absolutely perfect. The private, off-the-grid pod is set in such a stunning location above the Clarence River — it truly felt like a peaceful escape.
Everything was thoughtfully set up, from the outdoor area and BBQ to the composting toilet, which was clean and completely odour-free.
Overall, everything exceeded my expectations.
