Located in Southwest Washington State, Gifford Pinchot National Forest is one of the oldest National Forests in these United States. It’s ginormous too! The 1,312,00 acres of land include the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument where officials continue to perform studies and let the environment recover naturally from the 1980 earthquake and volcanic eruption. Visitors to the forest are presented with a seemingless endless list of opportunities that includes camping, hiking, climbing mountains, exploring caves, fishing, berry picking, wildlife viewing and more. Inspired by the first Chief of the Forest Service Gifford Pinchot’s plea to manage forests “for the long run,” the area retains a no-trace ethic. With its rich history, the forest commands more respect than Aretha Franklin.
