The best camping near Palisades State Park guide

Overview

About

Deep, deep gorges carved by Split Rock Creek over the past 1.2 billion years created this park. They left behind four great hiking trails so you can explore the quartzite rock formations.

Into rock climbing? This is the place to practice your rappelling and scaling surrounded by natural beauty (no bolting allowed, though!). Head to the river for fishing—Or show up for one of the park's family fishing weekends.

Kayakers and canoers can marvel as they drift past the looming quartzite formations overhead. At night, the stargazing is mesmerizing—Look for events centered around meteor showers to know what you're looking at!

Cabins and campsites are open year-round. But be prepared for frozen pipes (that means no water) from October to May. A small lodge is available for family reunions and small weddings. You can also rent a cabin or hook up your RV. If you're pitching a tent, look for a spacious campsite right on the river.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Palisades State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer months can be busy, so plan ahead for the best experience. Winter offers a serene, frosty landscape, though some amenities may be limited.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's website for any trail closures or safety alerts before your visit.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for hiking on rugged terrain.
  • Be mindful of the park's wildlife; observe from a distance and do not feed the animals.
  • Accessibility varies across the park; contact the visitor center for specific information.
  • Remember to pack out all trash and leave no trace to preserve the park's natural beauty.
