Get a much needed dose of nature with a weekend of camping near Albany, New York. The region is full of beautiful forests and lakes ideal for hiking, fishing, and swimming. Camp at Schodack Island State Park, just south of Albany, where you can hike, bike, kayak, and see bald eagles and blue herons in the park’s bird conservation area. Further south you'll find the highly scenic North-South Lake Campground, said to be the most popular campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Drive just an hour north of Albany to Lake George, a beautiful camping and vacation destination that’s popular among families. East of Albany, visit Cherry Plain State Park, where you can picnic, boat, hike, bike, and even cross country ski in winter. Find a different landscape altogether among the rolling sand dunes, dense shrubs, wildflowers, and prairie grass at Albany Pine Bush. You’re likely to spot a number of rare animal and plant species in the park’s unique ecosystem. You can’t camp here, but you can stay overnight nearby at Thompson’s Lake Campground at Thacher State Park. Boating, fishing, and other lake activities are popular here, given the lakeside location.
