I don't often use the word "magical" to describe anything, because I'm kind of cynical that way. But Logan has created a really special place near Crescent Lake, with an excellent location right off the Discovery Trail.
Aside from the well-outfitted outdoor kitchens and the spotless bathrooms (and even a shower), there are shrines to nature and peace throughout the expansive property. The camp host told us that Logan, a carpenter by trade, built everything himself. And, yes, you might even find Big Foot.
I suggest arriving before dark if you can, because while it's easy enough to find the camp itself, finding your camping spot can be a bit challenging. Also, keep in mind that you're driving in on the Discovery Trail itself for a short bit, so be careful of cyclists and be sure to park off the road if you're on one of the camping spots just off the trail.
A great, unexpected find.
Lazy J Ranch
in Lazy J Ranch, ArizonaGreat spot to stop off of i-10
Great communication from Vic on answering our questions about the location and then actually guiding us to the camp site from the highway. Very doable in low-profile vehicle.
We arrived just before sunset and left before sunrise, because of our schedule, but would be a great spot for a couple of nights. Very private, awesome sunset, huge fire pit, and free wood to scavenge.
Highly recommend if you're looking for something off the beaten trail while cruising down I-10 in Arizona.
Site 6
in Breath Sweet Camp, IowaWe arrived late at night, but our host was kind enough to have a beacon (her truck parked in the driveway, with the hazard lights flashing) to guide us in, as while the farm is located off a main country road, it was dark. The map directions were quite accurate, however, and it's easy enough to find, about an hour southeast of Omaha, near a major cycling trail.
She (sorry, it was so late we forgot your name!) even offered to bring us some wood for the fire pit, but we were just ready for bed.
We had a pot of hot coffee waiting for us in the morning, and there's a bathroom/shower inside the enclosed back porch available for guests to use.
Really nice experience.
