Barnyard Shady Day
in Carlandia CannaCamp, MichiganGracious hosts on rolling hills
Beautiful rolling hills. Killer sunrises. Gracious and helpful hosts. What more could you ask for? Maybe fresh eggs? Yes, they have those too. Carl and Andy have a little slice of heaven. Perfect for hammock camping. It's quiet at night and perfectly dark for stargazing. Fire wood is nicely seasoned and the fire rings are large. Nearby parks were recommended and did not disappoint. The town of Manchester just a 10 minute drive away has a little of everything in case you need something or just want to grab a quick bite.
Mountaintop Retreat Campsite
in Mountaintop Retreat, West VirginiaStars, moon and sunrise - win!
Cool location. Several spots to tent camp. The exposed spots were breezy, so be prepared, but nothing unusual for camping on the top of a mountain. Fire pits were legit and Tony was super responsive. Looks like there is upgrading going on which is a good thing. The cabins for rent at the tippy top of the mountian are sweet. Weathered ground brewery is close by and they had good beer and wings. The stars, full moon and sunrise were the high points of the stay. One thing I would say, it would be nice if the newly installed lights for the campsite number signs had an off switch. It's not like they were flood lights, but when the night comes and the stars are out, it would be nice to be able to shut them off. For my purposes a little duct tape did the trick, but that's not a fix that's sustainable.
Hostâs Site, Only Special Requests
in River Hills Above the Allegheny, PennsylvaniaWild, rugged and private.
Awesome property all around. All of the sites are unique. Some more off the beaten path. The six person tent was super clean and tucked among the pines. Lots of interesting mushrooms growing among the pine needles. Deer, birds, groundhogs, squirrels, and turkey were all spotted at various times on the property. The six person tent site slopes a little bit, but nothing that prevented full use. Picnic table and platform were level. The fire ring fits a weber grill grate perfectly on top allowing for wood fired cooking. Picnic table was sturdy and in excellent condition, as was the platform. Portapotty was just a quick walk away and was clean. If you are looking for wild and rugged, this site does not disappoint. Chris was an excellent host and his intructions and advice were timely and really helpful. Most of the sites at this location were easy to drive in and park next to. The six person tent site requires a truck/off road capable vehicle if you intend to park right next to your camp (host made sure to advise about this fact which I appreciated.) My Ram 1500 had no problem. A regular car or station wagon would be a no go for this particular site. You could get pretty close in a car and just hike in. Something to keep in mind if you bring a bunch of stuff and don't have the vehicle to get back to the site. This site does give a lot of privacy, though. I had 4g cell service at the site through verizon which was a plus. Tree spacing was also perfect for hammock placement and hammock camping. I will definitley return.
