Carter's Cross Country Ski Center and Shop has been a family-owned business since 1984. The land on which the trails have been built on has been in the Carter family since the late 1700's. The first Carter who came to Bethel was the first doctor in the area that helped Mollyocket, a Native American medicine woman. All the different generations that came along after were either farmers or loggers or both. Carter's XC Ski Center is located on the banks of the Big Androscoggin River. Our private established skiing/walking trails meander through the Maine woods all the way up to Farwell Mountain, overlooking Sunday River Ski, the Presidential and Mahoosuc Mountain Ranges and Mt. Off the grid-no electric or running water. Cell service is adequate. 1 gallon of fresh well water provided for drinking and 10 gallons for washing/cooking. We are off the beaten path in the forest near the White Mountain National Forest. A 6 to 8 minute hike from your site gets you to a private lake. We have two local waterfalls only 2 miles away. Drive back out to 5 Kezars road. Take a right on the paved road. It will turn back into dirt. Keep on this road until you see a beautiful stone house on your left. Keep going just up the hill and you will see a right turn into the woods where you can park. There are no signs for Kezar gorge. Hike towards the sound of the falls. There is a small cave under the falls you can climb up into if you are a strong swimmer. There is a second set of falls if you hike down the river. A most magical spot for sure. There is a beautiful hike to a mountain lookout view of an amazing panoramic of lakes and mountains including Mt Washington and Pleasant Ski mountain right from your site. Its 108-acres feature historic cabins and 4000 feet of frontage on Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner. The property’s coniferous and deciduous woods, vernal pools, and marshlands are important habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and plants. In 2018, the Maine Cabin Masters renovated two of the stream-side cabins, which now serve as rustic getaways for Hipcampers and the like. Very unique & cozy space within peaceful & idyllic surroundings! Everything was exactly as described upon arrival to Little Valley, and I was very impressed with the attention to detail with the cabin, which was generously-stocked with all needed camping & kitchen supplies. Location is within a half-hour to several popular hiking trails around the Farmington area, but there's some fun trails on-site to explore too. I hope to revisit this slice of paradise during winter season at some point in the future - couldn't recommend it highly enough!

I had an amazing time, will definitely be coming back. Absolutely beautiful peace of land. The tiny home is well appointed and comfortable. John is an excellent host and took time to explain the history of the land when I arrived, which really added to my appreciation of the place during my time there. Did some fishing and was perfect for our two nights. We were there in mid November and were so grateful he kept the cabin running for us.

I had the BEST two nights staying at the Bird’s Nest! It was so beautiful and cozy. The weather held out long enough to enjoy walking through the trails on the property, and building a fire in the wood stove was perfect for the rainy and chilly evening. Lisa is a wonderful host and put so much thought into everything one might need while staying here. I hope to be back again soon!

I really loved my stay here! It’s a great spot to relax and unwind. The coin operated showers were actually really nice. The cabin had a cozy, rustic vibe that made the stay memorable. Just a couple things for future guests. The cabin I stayed in had a screened entry instead of a solid door, so it got a little chilly at night. Also with it being so close to other cabins, we had to hang a blanket on the door. Being close to the road means you’ll hear some traffic, and the dogs from the nearby house barked a bit here and there. The game hall and kitchen area are a little dated, but they were clean and worked just fine.

What an awesome spot! The Birds Nest doesn’t disappoint. The Nest sits on the same property as the owner but it’s far enough away that you can’t even see anything. Such a magical little cabin with an awesome wood stove that will keep you more than cozy. Everything was nice and clean/tidy….the outhouse was the same. Amazing location for hiking. World class fly fishing in the Carrabassett River not far away. Me and the ole girl and I can’t wait to come back!!

I loved staying here with my dog! They were so thoughtful in both building and stocking the tiny house. I had everything I needed for a cozy night away from town and my dog loved running through the woods. They have well marked trails throughout. It was perfect!

Lisa was amazing about communicating before and during my trip. She was also super helpful on directing me to the perfect spot to watch the sunset. The Brid's Nest was exactly as described, and. a fun cabin to stay in. It is a little bit of a walk up to the cabin, but there is a wagon to help load up your suitcases. Sunrise through the trees the next morning was absolutely beautiful along with my drive to my next destination. If you don't mind glamping without the extra fluff, I recommend staying here!

Everything exceeded our expectations. The check in instructions were super clear and easy to follow, and the cabin was everything and more! We had our two dogs with us and they were able to be off leash while we were there and they LOVED it. A dreamy escape from everyday life!
