This ecological art project is currently recruiting visitors to camp in beautiful fields, on woodland rim sites, or at delicate campsites located along a system of woodland trails. As of 2026, camping here provides a glimpse into the 5th year of succession, which is characterized by spacious views of a gently rolling young prairie that is flanked by the rocky and steep slopes of a mature forest. Pet friendly and most likely a good fit for self-sufficient types that like campsites with generous spacing, but still want to get out to the park quickly (~7 miles to the Visitors Center) or travel into Cave City (3 mi) for coffee/ice-cream/pizza/barbecue/bar/food/etc. Expand from the campsite into a sketch-work of trails, as if camping near the headquarters of a satellite nature reserve. All sites except Spicebush have a filtered water output. Spicebush campers will have water access next to parking. Camping funds allow us to plant trees (~530 seedlings as of March 2026), establish prairie grasses and flowers, restore wetlands, create trails, and remove invasive species. A nice way to experience Mammoth Cave NP is to break the trip into 3 layers, covering the underworld (cave tours), upper world (hiking), and the water that connects the two (Green River). Mammoth Cave is unique in the way that a study of the underworld will repeatedly draw the mind into a creative space where we imagine what is beneath the surface and how these worlds are linked, while above ground hiking on land or kayaking on the ecologically rich and biodiverse Green River. Kayaking the Green is elemental; like unplugging from one world, pure nature immersion. We offer kayaks (see extras), that leave from camp, tailored to your schedule. Thanks to our visitors for supporting this type of project! Most commonly booked extras: 1. Dried and split firewood bundles, usually a mix of oak with a suggested donation of $6/bundle, delivered to the campsite. 2. Kayaks on a suggested donation basis ($45) providing a flexible option for visitors to float the Green River through the NP. 3. Pending availability, we are happy to pitch a tent (REI 4 person Half Dome plus 2 sleeping pads) for those who want to camp but are not traveling with gear.

Learn more about this land: I live on 5.5 acres. It's peaceful and quiet and I love it here. I've stayed at other hip camps and simply decided that I would love to share my little slice of heaven with others passing through my area.  Notes: there is a wee bit of road noise, I live on a dead end road, there are 10 acres between my 5 acres and the Blue Grass Parkway.  I find it peaceful here and can easily ignore it but I'm mentioning it so your not surprised by it  ;)  The Neighbors dog may come visit while you are here but is very nice and leaves if you tell him to :) You are welcome to hang a hammock in a small section of woods, by a small pond, or even on my covered porch. You are welcome to pitch a tent anywhere you like. You are welcome to park an RV or vehicle in the drive.  The drive is about 250ft long, you would need to back in in order to hook up to the 50 amp plug. RV's can use the 50 amp plug (30 amp will need an adapter. I have one you can use if you don't own one of your own) and hose for water. I have an outdoor shower and a camping toilet. I am ... - one hour from Lexington, Louisville, Elizabethtown, and Frankfort.- 1 mile from a mini mart with Gas, Ice, Pizza, Chicken Wings, Sandwiches, ect.- 6 miles from Dollar General and A pizza Restaurant - 15 ish miles from Wal-mart and other chain stores and restaurants I'm a great travel guide so feel free to tell me what your in town for or things you like to do. I will happily make you up a list of things to do and see and places to eat. Keenland, Churchill Downs, The Bourbon Tour (Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Heaven Hill, and many others) are within an hour of here. Also within an hour are 2 great bike paths, wonderful hiking and kayaking. As well as Great Shopping and Restaurants. Anything your heart desires. Using GPS Directions i would suggest avoiding Tunnel Mill Rd and Murphy Lane if towing a camper or driving an RV.

I spent a night at Hickory Field and it was magical. The campsite is beautifully landscaped. Campsite has soft grass to set out your tent, nice fire pit too. The real show begins at sundown, that is when hundreds of fireflies start their show all around you. Kevin is a great host, he made sure we had everything we needed.

The land was so beautiful, you can tell Kevin and his family have poured their hearts into making this someplace special. Not only did I feel safe but I felt like if I needed anything, Kevin would have been happy to help. Whether you want to enjoy a secluded trip in the forest, or hang with Kevin and his puppies, you'll find it all here. Apart from the site, one of my highlights on this ENTIRE trip was just sitting on the porch chatting with Kevin about the birds, plants, and life. We had the best time staying at Kevin's. The campsite & property are beautiful and thoughtfully designed. We added two bundles of firewood to our site, and it was intentionally set up and organized for us upon arrival; perfect amount for our two night stay! We couldn't recommend this site enough. It's been our favorite spot on hip camp, and you can tell how much attention and care Kevin has put into this project. The proximity to Mammoth Cave and the surrounding activities is also great; such an easy drive! Couldn't recommend this site enough and hope to stay here again during future visits!

This was such a peaceful spot! Waking up, I could hear woodpeckers knocking on the trees, during the afternoon butterflies flew around curiously, and at night the owls hooted in the trees. The nearby lake gave the perfect scenic view for some book reading. I can say without a doubt that I recommend this spot if you're looking for serenity!

Loved everything about this site! So peaceful and pretty. The goats provided endless entertainment. Thoughtful host has stocked the bathroom with supplies. This will definitely be our go-to spot when visiting Mammoth Cave. Just some helpful notes for campers: The green river ferry is only operational until 4pm each day and even though the ferry says no RVs, our Transit camper van was allowed. Also, this campsite is in a dry county, so come prepared. Finally, horses will be trotting by often (lovely!) but just something to keep in mind if you are bringing a pup. Five stars!! This has been one of our favorite hip camps to date!

Weekend Trip to Beardsnest

Easy to find, and super close to most of the attractions we saw at the National Park. I recommend purchasing the firewood bundles. It’s convenient and you’re not moving firewood, which promotes their restoration project. Although the site is mostly primitive (you do have potable water), it feels inviting with the stone fire ring, two chairs waiting on you, and manicured paths. The field is scenic and serene. Far enough from other sites, it feels like you’re the only ones there even if you’re not. Kevin was responsive and hospitable. Both mornings a pair of geese flew directly over the campsite at dawn, honking as they passed. We could also hear turkeys, chickens, and songbirds. Kevin is full of advice, so be sure to ask him if you need local tips.
