Weekend Trip to The Commons Oak Savanna

Steve was an awesome host. After we got parked he explained some things he had to offer. I got lavender bunches, honey, and a book written by Steve himself. I teared up when he was explaining the true story of a princess he met at the age of 95, who has an incredible story… I am looking forward to reading it. We spent Halloween night here, without any scary stuff happening, and we lived to tell another story. Thanks Steve.

I loved camping here for a couple of nights! I ended up driving in a bit later than anticipated and it was more difficult to find after sunset, so I agree with the host in that arriving before sunset is best. The stars were beautiful and it was peacefully quiet the entire time. I was so cozy, thank you for letting me stay!

Weekend Trip to The Vaudeville Urban Farm Fun!

Nicky's urban farm was truly an oasis and refuge in the big city. After spending the day in Chicago, to come just 6 miles away and have grass, trees, goats, and chickens, potential for a fire in a fire pit, and calm, was priceless. Nicky and her partner are super friendly and helpful. The train does come behind her property, but they are quieter and fewer at night and did not disturb us. A wonderful stay!

We got one of the 3 spots, all the way at the end of their property. The grass was so beautiful that I was jealous! All the birds were so cute! Especially the ducks with the white fluffy heads. Those were adorable! They didn’t let us pet them, but were very well into our lettuce. It’s 9min away from a shopping area with Walmart, Walgreens and all kinds of food places. Be aware of the bees. They have beautiful flowers and happy bees. Tons of bees that are not shy at all.

Great little hidden gem just outside downtown! The space is gated, peaceful, and perfect for posting up , my small tent fit like a dream. Nicole was super kind and accommodating, and the Green Line’s only a 5 minute walk (if that). Oh, and there are goats. Actual, adorable goats. Baaah. 10/10 would camp again.

Weekend Trip to A Creek Runs Through It

When we pulled up to the site, Kristen made sure we knew exactly where to park and gave us the layout of her land. It was nice to be able to park our camper there while we visited the nearby town. This site was quiet and private. We felt very safe here. Kristen communicated well and we knew everything we needed to know before even showing up. We would definitely camp here again!

It's a special spot where you may happen upon a fire in the sugar shack while we boil city collected sap into maple syrup or have an open jam night with world class jazz musicians. Enjoy the morning serenade of our rooster! Really, just come and be here. Though we think we're pretty cool, a few things to note that you may not think are so cool: There is a train that runs directly behind the farm. Light sleepers, may want to bring ear plugs. We try to accommodate parking your car on site but it's weather and situation conditional. Assume the possibility that you may need to park on the street. Bring your tent to The Vaudeville! (RVs, campers, trailers, vans please see the ** at the bottom). Perched on the shores of Lake Michigan and less than an hour’s drive from Milwaukee and Chicago, Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park makes the perfect city retreat. With miles of rambling marshes, dunes, and sandy ridges all hemmed in by black oak forests, this is an inland beach break with some seriously wild views. Bring your bike to explore the Zion Bike Trail, discover five miles of hiking trails, or head to the lake to swim and fish. All campsites at the Illinois Beach Campground have electric hookups and easy access to the swimming beach.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve one of 240 electric RV/tent sites at Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park online.
Reservations are possible from May through September; from October through March, camping is available on a walk-in basis only.
Campsite reservations open six months in advance and must be made three days before arrival.
Unbooked campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis but can fill up early on Fridays each weekend in peak season.

We loved it here and I highly recommend sites 246-249 because these are the full shade sites. These sites back up to a green area and are shaded by tall pine trees. It smells glorius. The walk to the beach is about 5 minutes by foot and your camp fee pays for a private beach feeling. You also have the privilege of enjoying a vacant midcentury building for a quick reenactment of the "Walking Dead" and photo ops.
